The LEAP Indiana Annual Teaching Award (full time teaching) was given to Hubert Izienicki, Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Purdue University Northwest. This award recognizes instructors who use transformative, inclusive and engaged classroom techniques that result or culminate in effective teaching.

Emily Hixon wrote,” In addition to creating rich and meaningful learning experiences for his students, he is also a faculty leader who supports effective instruction across the institution and beyond. He is a gifted teacher, productive scholar and committed colleague who exemplifies the qualities and skills being recognized by this award. Perhaps his most powerful and impactful work related to the syllabus was published in a 2023 article in Teaching Sociology entitled “Beyond Policies and Procedures: Using the Syllabus Quiz to Predict How Well Students Will Perform in a College Course.” Demonstrating his proficiency as a scholar of teaching and learning, Dr. Izienicki conducted a research study to investigate students’ overall course performance as a function of their performance on a quiz over the syllabus at the start of the course. He found that students who do not earn the maximum score on the quiz (when given multiple attempts) receive lower grades in the course and are less likely to pass the course than their peers who earn all of the points on the syllabus quiz. These findings have huge implications for promoting student success and are applicable across all college courses. If a simple syllabus quiz can help instructors identify early on which students may need additional resources and support to be successful, instructors can intervene in a timely manner to provide those students with the additional support they need to be successful.”

🌟Alumni Feature 🌟 Rachel Pollack 🌟 "Through the sociology program I strengthened my writing skills and discovered I also liked working with data and this led me into the marketing field. I love that I can be creative while still focusing on being data driven. Having a background in sociology has helped me to thrive in the marketing industry because I can identify patterns and factors that might impact behavior. When crafting strategy, I am also cognizant about inequality in representation. Additionally, sociology has taught me the importance of corporate social responsibility and how that shapes brand perception."

Rachel earned her BA in Sociology at PNW in 2014 and then went on to earn her MS in Human Development & Family Studies PNW 2016 and MBA in Business Administration PNW 2021. She works as a content strategist for Centier Bank and is responsible for creating and implementing a plan for producing content across their digital platforms. This includes making sure old content is updated and optimized, working with other professionals to produce new content, ensuring brand consistency, and staying current on content trends and consumer behavior.

Dr. Izienicki's latest publication is hot off the press: "The big picture: Representation of LGBTQ characters and themes in picture books available in the United States 1972-2018" in the journal Sexualities. We are to have Prof Izienicki here

Article Abstract
"The number of LGBTQ picture books—literary works for children containing le***an, gay, bisexual, trans, and q***r characters and themes—has increased considerably since 2000. While different segments of this category of books have been examined, there has been a limited examination of the entire genre. Using 234 English-language LGBTQ picture books available in the United States between 1972 and 2018, I conducted a content analysis of the main themes and central characters as well as investigate how the main themes changed over time and the extent to which they reflected the larger historical contexts in which they were created. I find that very few LGBTQ characters are cast as main protagonists and some (i.e., bisexuals) are completely absent. Similarly, I find an increase in diversity of themes over the decades yet with most centering on marriage, parenting, and domesticity. Together, LGBTQ picture books convey a limited view of the LGBTQ lives."

Concerned faculty and staff of the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Purdue University Northwest condemn the racist mocking of Asian languages by Chancellor Keon at the morning commencement ceremonies on December 10, 2022. His behavior does not represent us or what we stand for as educators. We condemn all racism and hate as we stand with our AAPI colleagues and students and all who are routinely marginalized.

Alumni Feature 🌟Neil Thomas🌟 "I’ll always be grateful that the sociology program at PNW afforded me opportunities to gain skills that would lead me directly to a career in the field of social science research, and much of that can be attributed to the wonderful professors that encouraged and supported my endeavors. But more importantly than that, an education in sociology taught me how to be a more empathic human, allowing me to understand myself and the world around me better than I could have otherwise.

Sociology is an incredible framework to understand the systems that we reside within and interact with every day. It’s a way of thinking that forces you out of your own narrow window of experience and helps you understand the relationships between people and institutions, history and geopolitics. Essentially, my education in sociology gave me the tools to think critically about my experiences on a daily basis."

Neil graduated with his BA in Sociology in 2009 from PNW and is currently the manager of survey programming for Decision Information Resources, a research and evaluation company based out of Houston, Texas. We are !
