+++ Sickest bowl cut in the USA at Coco’s high school graduation. ‘Vital Return’ is dedicated to our pops and Wally’s stepmom - here’s info on “Sediment:”

Cory and I’s dad was a wonderful guy. He was a kind man to his core, but like most people, he was complicated. It would be tough to succinctly sum up someone that is so larger-than-life for my brother and I, which also presented challenges in writing songs about him once he’d died. Several of the tunes on the record are about him, but this one addresses a specific part of his experience I only came to fully understand after he passed.

He fought for the Marines in Vietnam, and though he survived the duration of the war, eventually he developed cancer from exposure to Agent Orange (a toxic herbicide irresponsibly deployed by the US during the war). He may have survived the fighting, but the war did kill him in the end, and he suffered from PTSD for decades after. Our mom tells a story about him ducking behind the couch anytime a thunderstorm would hit - the thunderclaps sounded like distant bombs. He later told me just before he died that he was hallucinating a young Vietnamese girl in the road outside their house, waving for him to go with her.

Wallace’s spoken part in the song is a characterization of my mom and our stepmom combined, mixed with parts of the family as a whole, trying our best to calm him and bring him back from his terror. She promises she’s “buried” the threat and that he can come out safely now. She continues speaking to him calmly even as the noise reaches its peak at the end. The song is called “Sediment,” referring to the residue of his PTSD and its symptoms: quick temper, anxiety, hyper-vigilance, the list goes on. In it, we’re asking where that energy/matter settles and we realize it likely flowed downstream; it stayed with us, affecting our early understanding of the world and its dangers through this poisoned part of his disorder. Realizing how much the PTSD haunted him clarified a lot about my own upbringing immensely. After all, matter cannot be created nor destroyed, it only changes. +++ pick up the record at the link in our bio !!
