Meet our new Police Chief Stephen Schluer!🇺🇸

Meet Stephen Schluer, Police Chief for the City of Manteca!

Stephen Schluer is the new Police Chief for the City of Manteca. He has worked for the City for 27 years.

“Throughout my entire life, I’ve had a strong desire to contribute to my community. I was raised in Manteca and became a member of the Police Explorers program in 1987.

“When I made the choice to pursue a career as a police officer, it was with the unwavering intention of remaining in Manteca. My goal has always been to do my part to enhance Manteca, making it a more desirable place to reside, visit, and raise a family.”

Asked what he likes the most about his job, Schluer said, “It’s the people I work with at the Police department. Our department is rather tight-knit; it’s my second family.”

When asked what a typical day is like, Chief Schluer responds, “A typical day involves a series of demanding and varied responsibilities. It typically begins with a morning briefing alongside senior officers and command staff, where I gain insights into ongoing investigations, emerging challenges, and departmental priorities.

“The day involves a series of meetings with diverse stakeholders, including City officials, community leaders, representatives from other law enforcement agencies, and community organizations. Building and nurturing these relationships within the community is paramount for fostering trust and cooperation.”

He continues, “I’m actively engaged in the continuous development and refinement of departmental policies and procedures, ensuring they adhere to evolving legal standards and align with our commitment to community safety and fairness.

“Community engagement remains a central focus, with frequent participation in events, forums, and outreach activities aimed at ensuring transparency and building strong community bonds.

“I also stand prepared to lead and coordinate emergency responses to significant incidents, oversee budget management to optimize resource allocation, remain in touch with the local media to convey important updates and maintain public trust, engage in long-term strategic planning to address crime reduction and community policing strategies and prioritize the ongoing training and professional development of our officers.

“Throughout the day, I am deeply committed to problem-solving, addressing a range of community issues, and ensuring that public safety and the well-being of our community remain at the forefront of my daily duties. Adaptability, effective communication, and a strong sense of duty are essential in the demanding role of a police chief.”

With regard to Schluer’s community involvement, over the years he has coached local youth and high school sports programs and volunteered in and participated in community events and fundraisers. “I am always looking for opportunities to be a part of the community so that I don’t lose sight of who we work for.” Other activities include:

🚔 Manteca Police Department is joining forces with San Joaquin County Police Agencies to Promote Safe Driving 🚦

This week, Manteca will see a unique collaboration in action as officers from neighboring police agencies join hands with the Manteca Police Department to ensure safer streets.

Thursday, October 26, 2023, Manteca Police Department will be conducting a Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.), all geared towards reducing vehicle collisions and promoting responsible driving on our roadways. 🛣️

Our police department will be working in close partnership with the local traffic enforcement units from Tracy, Ripon, Lodi, San Joaquin County, Stockton, and the California Highway Patrol to enforce California Vehicle Code violations.

👮‍♂️ More than 20 dedicated traffic officers from these participating police agencies will be patrolling the City of Manteca throughout the day, focusing on ticketing vehicle code violations that frequently lead to traffic collisions. 🚫 These violations include unsafe speeding, right-of-way violations, impaired driving, hazardous turning maneuvers, disregarding stop signs, and the dangerous use of cell phones while driving.

🚨 We believe in community involvement, and everyone has a role to play in making Manteca's streets safer. 🤝 So remember, slow down, scan ahead, don't drink and drive, put your cell phone down, be aware of your surroundings, and report reckless driving.

Together, as a community, we can significantly reduce injuries and save lives on Manteca roadways by practicing safe driving habits. 🙌

SCAM ALERT!!!!

We have received several calls for service reporting someone is attempting to scam people over the phone.

The police department will not contact you via telephone and demand you pay money because you have a warrant for your arrest.

Please do not fall victim to these thieves.

Manteca Against Special Interests Just say no to special interests dictating our General Plan and how we grow!

Why I’m Running for City Council

I often think about what my life was like when I first moved to Manteca-and for that matter, what Manteca was like. I moved here and started my business, Miner Mart, back in 1995. I can still remember driving down the highway and realizing that there was not much in this town other than Wal Mart, a few shops downtown, and some housing development projects in the making. Being born and raised in the Bay Area, the move to Manteca was quite a transition. Nonetheless, I saw great potential in my newly purchased business; more importantly, I recognized Manteca’s promising potential.

Over the years, I have witnessed the construction of hundreds of new homes. I have also seen new chain restaurants spring up, and other major businesses like Costco establish roots in our city. I think that in comparison to nearby cities like Stockton and Modesto that Manteca still lacks a variety of restaurants for residents to frequent. There is no doubt that Manteca is both growing and changing, but I would like to see our city continue to expand in a way that directly benefits our families.

As a City Councilman and former Planning Commissioner, I participated in the approval process for many of the newer businesses and homes that you see as you drive down the roads today. This includes the construction of Fire Station Number 4 on Lathrop Road which brought greater service levels to the northern part of Manteca and now Fire Station Number 5 which will soon break ground south of the 120 Bypass. We have also hired 5 new police officers this year to keep our streets safe and a new Community Resource Officer to help address our homelessness issue. To date, we have helped over 200 people get off our streets and into housing or get re-integrated with their families. I am proud to have the endorsement of Manteca Police Officers and Firefighters because keeping Manteca safe is the Council’s top priority.
