S4SES Second International Conference on Education Studies
Synthesis of Day 1
By
Dr. Edwin Lineses
S4SES
Greetings to everyone, and thank you for joining us today!
Today’s conference served as a vital platform for a diverse audience, including researchers, teachers, students, administrators, and practitioners. It offered an opportunity to engage in the collective sharing of research findings, encompassing both theoretical and practical implications to contribute to the ongoing discussions and debates on educational leadership in varied governance and socio-ecological contexts.
We were warmly welcomed to the conference by Dr. Claire Anne A. Olivares, the Dean of the College of Education at Tarlac Agricultural University and given inspiring message by Dr. Max P. Guillermo, the President of Tarlac Agricultural University. Their opening remarks and message set the stage for delving into the challenges and intricacies of educational leadership and administration.
Dr. Fras C. Abaya, the President of the S4SES, posed a thought-provoking question, urging us to reflect on how we navigate the ever-changing landscape of educational leadership, recognizing its crucial role in addressing the crises and uncertainties within the contemporary education system. The call to action is clear: we have to recognize and harness our contextualized leadership potential whenever the need arises.
During the plenary session, we were privileged to gain insights into the life and works of Dr. Eugenie Samier from the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom. [We are saddened by the sudden demise of our supposedly first plenary speaker. Our prayers are with her and her loved ones]. Dr. Eufracio Abaya, Dr. Mercedes Arzadon, and Dr. Jocelyn Guadalupe, esteemed educators from the College of Education at the University of the Philippines, led us through a tribute to Dr. Samier. As a seasoned author in the field of educational leadership, Dr. Samier's work encourages us to explore the contextual nuances of educational leadership in our respective areas, including alternative approaches for diverse contexts, such as those within the Muslim community. Inspired by Dr. Samier, the challenge presented is the meta-analysis of indigenous leadership identities against the backdrop of the privileged Western epistemology and ontology. The key lies in decentering Western practices of educational leadership.
Dr. Vicente Chua Reyes, Jr., from the Centre for Research in Educational Leadership and Management at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, played a crucial role as a "critical friend," elevating the discourse within the realm of educational leadership. His presentation, titled "Educational Leadership in Wicked Times," delved into the intricate challenges faced by education leaders, emphasizing the divergence of values, the complexity inherent in educational systems, and the uncertainties faced by education leaders. In his comprehensive discussion, Dr. Reyes sought to stimulate conversations and debates addressing perennial issues in education. Notably, he illustrated the introduction of K-12 or the Matatag curricula as wicked problems, embodying divergence, complexity, and uncertainty. He boldly challenged us to consider decolonizing the educational system and encouraged a collective exploration of the underlying reasons behind our actions.
Going beyond Western perspectives, Dr. Reyes questioned the hegemony of Western institutions, advocating for a re-imagination or decolonization of educational leadership. This involves active engagement with emerging debates, empowerment of alternative non-dominant voices, and the collaborative production of global and local temporal settings. Dr. Reyes passionately urged us to challenge assumptions, consciously document our actions, and engage in reflective practices for continuous learning. This holistic approach encapsulates the essence of his call to critically examine, consciously act, and consistently learn in the ever-evolving landscape of educational leadership.
The afternoon sessions provided us opportunities to listen to and learn from the breakout sessions. Strands like post-pandemic educational leadership, student leaders in educational change, education leadership in curricular and academic change, artificial intelligence, the naturalization of audit culture, and imperatives of SDGs kept us continuously learning from the knowledge and experiences of various presenters.
In essence, the first day of this conference has not only provided a platform for sharing knowledge but has also ignited a collective passion for reimagining and decolonizing educational leadership to address the challenges of our times.
A lingering question persists: are we certain that our approach to educational leadership is genuinely adapted to our local and indigenous contexts, or are we just perpetuating an educational system inherited from the West?
One day to go!
