How to Motivate Yourself to Work Out… Especially When You Don’t Feel Like It

Sometimes getting motivated to start a workout can be just as hard as the exercise itself. There are days it seems almost impossible to muster up the energy to do anything other than veg out on the couch. Yet there are people who squeeze in at least a little exercise every day. How do they do that, and can everyone else get some of that magical motivation?
You might be in luck. Researchers may have finally figured out how to get people more excited about exercising. The trick? Just stay focused on the here and now.

“People will not commit to exercise if they see its benefits as distant or theoretical,” Dr. Michelle L. Segar, author of No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness told The New York Times. “It has to be portrayed as a compelling behavior that can benefit us today.”

In her book, she talks about using exercise to enhance happiness, rather than a way to achieve a physical goal in the future. This study published in Psychological Health found that 335 older adults aged 60–96 exercised more often when they placed an emphasis on how it increased their quality of life, as compared to those who exercised solely for health benefits.

In other words, thinking about going for a run today in hopes of being 10 pounds lighter in two months, is less likely to help you wake up for a jog before dawn than if you think about going for a run as a way to see a friend or exploring a new part of town. It’s these kinds of immediate rewards that researchers say are more likely to keep you coming back for more exercise. Rather work out indoors? Put the focus on increasing your energy, improving your mood, or lowering your stress level, and you might be more likely to push play. “I like to think of physical activity as a way to revitalize and renew ourselves [and] as fuel to better enjoy and succeed at what matters most,” says Dr. Segar.

What Can I Do About a Weight Loss Plateau?

The struggle is real y’all. Losing those stubborn 5–10 extra pounds, or pushing past a stagnant period to meet your long-term goal is hard work. Sometimes you may wonder if it’s even possible to lose more weight or get leaner.

It is! Here are some common reasons the scales don’t seem to budge, and some tried-and-true nutrition solutions.

It’s time to adjust the portions.
If you’ve lost a lot of weight already, and you would like to keep losing, you will have to adjust your portions so that you can lose more. If you keep doing the same thing over and over again, you’ll keep getting the same results… and see the same number on the scale. Many people need to cut back and simplify. Sporting a smaller frame requires less energy (aka calories), thus adjusting portion sizes may be the ticket to help you tip the scales in your favor.

Some people need to eat more, while others will have to eat less to lose weight — if you’re confused about which one applies specifically to you, it might be a good idea to ask your doctor, or see a registered dietitian.

Measure your macros.
More often than not, you’re probably not eating enough of the two key nutrients that help keep weight off: fiber and protein. Up your protein intake, especially at breakfast and snacks (particularly a post-workout snack or supplement like Beachbody Performance Recover). These are fueling opportunities where protein is usually too low. Fiber helps to provide fullness and meal satisfaction, so aim to eat at least two cups of non-starchy veggies at each meal to get enough. Measure and keep track of your food (Beachbody’s Portion Fix containers can help you do this) to ensure you’re meeting your macro goals.

Evaluate your sweets, treats, and cheats.
When trying to trim down, we can fall into the temptation of eating clean during the week and letting loose on the weekend. This cycle can undo all of the clean eating you did during the week. It’s important to be honest with yourself about how often and how much you are “rewarding” yourself with food. Shift your focus to treating yourself to non-food rewards for the progress you’ve made. This simple shift will make it easier to stay balanced all week long and avoid binge eating.

Take your measurements.
The scale really isn’t the best way to measure progress. Weight is just a number, but body composition tells a better story. Maybe you’re not really stuck in a weight loss plateau, and in reality you’re building lean muscle mass and shredding fat? (This is especially common among athletes and people who work out.) Take your measurements and set body composition goals that are realistic for a better approach to weight loss.

Try to eat intuitively.
Maybe you’re a new mom, business owner, or have a stressful job, and you’re trying to trim down at the same time. It’s easy to be distracted trying to manage it all, and that stress can affect meal time.

Focus on your hunger and fullness, and don’t eat if you’re not hungry.
On a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 being starving and 10 being stuffed, ask yourself before your meal how hungry you are. The closer you are to zero, the harder it will be to slow down and pay attention to satisfaction. Instead of polishing off all of the food on your plate, challenge yourself to stop when you’re at a 5–7 on the fullness scale. This is just one more “little secret” to successfully managing your weight and busting through that stubborn weight loss plateau.

Today, I want to talk about the temple that is your body and how to treat it through living preventatively. Preventative living is the only way to live, in my book. Isn't it better to do what's good now, instead of having the treat illnesses and disease down the road when it's too late?



Treat Your Body As The Temple it Is.

Our bodies are temples and they need nourishment and care to function optimally and be healthy. When it comes to health, the foods we put in our mouth are more important than how we move our bodies. Both definitely go hand-in-hand, and you don't want to forego one for the other.

You all know I am a huge proponent of exercise, and yes, it's what I do for a living, yet I also recognize how truly integral diet is in the big picture of optimal health and wellness. And when I say, "diet" I don't mean counting calories and ingesting diet foods. Your diet, and what you eat, is a way of life.

I literally cringe inside when I hear people say, after finishing a workout, "Now I can eat whatever I want." And then they go for the cheeseburger or donuts, or some heart-stopping, processed foods. Exercising is not about getting to eat whatever you want. It's a vehicle used in conjunction with healthy food to keep your body performing at it's best as it ages.



Food is Health, Exercise is Fitness

Look, the way I see it is this; Food is Health, Exercise is Fitness. You need both. It's simple really. Eat good food everyday, move your body every day and health can be yours.

Remember that little (yet extremely powerful) saying from Hippocrates, "Food is Thy Medicine?" Well, I've seen it first hand in my life. When I began to change my diet many years ago and eat healthy, it changed how I felt physically, my energy levels went through the roof and I was sleeping better and had more balanced moods.

It is possible to prevent future health problems through eating a whole food diet, and very possibly reverse some of your current health issues!



How to Incorporate Whole Foods Into Your Diet

I do my best to stay away from any food that comes in a bag, box or can that has more than 4 ingredients. Processed food is frankenfood. It's not real. It's not good for you. And it provides nearly no nutritional value.

Sometimes it's hard to avoid, especially because convenience can be a huge factor when it comes to how we eat, but convenience does not equal health. Most convenience foods contain a lot of chemicals and ingredients that tend to be hard to pronounce and harmful to the body.

I travel extensively and believe me, it can be challenging to stay healthy on the road, but the key to staying healthy is being prepared and eating as many whole, unprocessed foods as possible. This includes veggies, whole grains, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, healthy fats and lean proteins.

The more of these whole foods we put into our body, the better and healthier we will feel. Eating this way will start to bring your body into a more alkaline state which is how our tissues, blood and organs stay healthy.

Alkaline foods are known for helping to reverse disease. Foods like leafy greens and other veggies will help your body to become more and more alkaline. Drinking a green smoothie everyday is a great way to get those awesome, alkaline greens into your life.

When the body becomes over loaded with acid (ie: processed foods, sugar, coffee, meats, dairy) it will become a breeding ground for disease and also exacerbate any current health issues you may have.

Make sure to have a huge leafy green salad every day and pile lots of veggies on your plate.



Live Preventatively

Look, preventative living doesn't have to be hard. It's about educating yourself. As you age, your body will break down more and more, it's a given, so you have a choice about whether you want to help it stay strong and healthy, or add to the aging process by not taking care of it.

Enroll friends or family to help you. Shop at your local farmer's market, and on the perimeter of the grocery store or plant a garden. Start to seek out fun, delicious recipes to incorporate more alkaline, whole foods into your diet. Get creative. Your body will only thank you, and you will feel so much lighter, happier and energetic. Your vitality depends on it!

Ok, so here's the deal...

Unless you've been living under a rock or you're new to the social media world... it's no secret that your newsfeed is probably consumed with "join my team" ads, before/after photos and great testimonials from high-quality products in various network marketing/direct sales companies. Sometimes it gets overwhelming and maybe even a little annoying. I get it! And, I'm totally not bashing those distributors/reps at all! Shoot, being on one of the top teams in the Team Beachbody Network, sometimes I even get a little annoyed. Don't get me wrong... I am a HUGE supporter of network marketing myself! I do think it's a fantastic business model. It provides Freedom and flexibility, opportunity for financial success, fun/support and opportunities for personal growth! It's especially fantastic for people with big scary goals! But I also believe it has to be tastefully done. Starting your own business does not have to label you as a "newsfeed spammer," not every team is the same and your decision in selecting a "work-at-home" opportunity should be a thought-out, serious decision, and you should sign with a person who you know will help guide you in the right direction in becoming a success. You should also support a product that you are PASSIONATE about because that's where you're going to find your FIRE!

When I discovered I could create a 6-figure income from home doing what I LOVED (helping people through the vehicle of health and fitness all while working on my own fitness/health goals) I let that passion propel me forward! NATURAL WAYS TO DETOX YOUR BODY THAT AREN'T JUICING!

Most of the time when people consider going on a natural detoxification diet, their first assumption is to focus on juicing, right? Do not get me wrong, juicing is one of the ways to detox, but what most people do not realize is that it is not the only option out there. Juice cleanses have had tons of praises for their benefits, but there have been numerous people who have also claimed that juicing, if not done properly, can actually turn into a major detriment for one's body. But do not fret, there are, indeed, other ways that you can still detox successfully without having to worry about all of the juicing. Below are a few more options to help you healthily detox your body!

Take a Soak
One simple and easy method of natural detoxification is to go to your bathroom and take a bath! Your body naturally makes an antioxidant called glutathione, which aids your liver in the filtering of the good and bad stuff in your body. However, thanks to stress, various ailments, and pollution that we come in contact with outside and around our general environments, our levels of the antioxidant can quickly be diminished. To fix this, all you have to do is run yourself a hot bath, sprinkle your bath with Epsom salts, and step in! Epsom salts have sulfur, which builds your glutathione back up!

Come on and Sweat
This second way to detox your system is also natural, but a bit more dirty - as a matter of fact, you could utilize this detox method just before you take a soak. Sweating has the ability to help you release toxins that are residing in your body fat. But you do not necessarily have to go outside and be active to make yourself. Saunas are another great resource to take advantage of if you are not really into being active for the time being. Make sure to check with your doctor and make sure you are healthy enough to handle a sauna first, though. Once you are cleared, start off sitting in the sauna for about five minutes a few times a week. You will eventually find yourself about to sit for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing yourself to detox your body two to three times a week! Just remember to stay hydrated!

Exercise
Speaking of sweating, did you realize that exercise is an excellent way to naturally detoxify your body? When you get a great workout in, this causes your blood to start pumping and flow to all of your internal organs. As your blood flows to all of your bodily systems, it also drops all necessary nutrients to keep these areas up and running and in prime condition. Simply getting in a simple 30-minute workout should do the trick. And just think about it: if you exercise enough to make yourself start sweating, you will have killed two birds with one stone! Not to mention that you can wash all that nasty sweat off with a nice Epsom salt soak! How awesome is that?

Take Deep Breaths
Did you ever realize how important breathing is to detoxification? Breathing in oxygen is another way of taking in vitamins and nutrients and allowing yourself to exhale helps you eliminate bad stuff. This is one of the most natural and simple ways to detox, but many people do not realize it and do not take advantage of it like they really could. Simply sitting in a comfy spot and focusing on your breathing for five to 20 minutes will help you get well on your way to prime detoxification. Take in deep breaths while silently counting to five and exhale at the same number to start off will help you learn how to properly breathe to obtain your ultimate detox!

Drink Water
You cannot take inventory of organic detoxification systems without mentioning water intake at least once! Water is kind of a big deal when it comes to cheap, organic, and simple ways to detox your body. No, you do not have to go on a fast and only feast on water for a week, but you could do that if you so choose. If you are new to detox or are not a big fan of fasting, simply replacing your normal drinks with water when your enjoy your meals will do wonders. Water helps clean your system, which allows your skin to clear up and even help you lose weight. Try this detox method on for size and watch the toxins clear away!

Get a Massage
Here is a nice a relaxing way to detox your body! Something like a Swedish or sports massage is an excellent way to achieve detox. Massages that are deep, intense, and focused on hitting your pressure points will help you to release toxins from within your muscle tissue. This will also help to ward off some of those underlying things that were previously making you sick. Make sure to hire a licensed massage therapist that you can visit regularly. Also remember to drink water after your sessions - this will help to further flush out those toxins.

As you can see, there are actually a number of great and versatile ways to have a healthy body detox without having to resort to juicing! Regular practice of any of these methods will have you feeling and looking refreshed in no time! You do not have to participate in the methods every single day; it is okay to go to the sauna once a week or workout every other day. Any effort at detox will suffice, and your body will be thanking you for it as soon as you start!

INDEPENDENT BEACHBODY COACH INFORMATION, COST?
A one time fee of $40 to become a beachbody coach. This is not a yearly or reoccurring fee. You can also get that $40 fee waived if you sign up with a challenge pack or you or your spouse is active military then that fee is waived! (I can explain those options in more depth as well).
A monthly website fee of $15. Beachbody gives you three canned websites where you can do some minor personalization. I have decided to create my own website and blog to share my experiences but it is not required.

To remain an active coach you need to have a Personal Volume (PV) of 50 points per month. Purchasing a month's supply of Shakeology (at a 25% discount) is 90PV for example and you're done. This is a 60 day group that teaches you everything you need to know about running a challenge group, how to find people to invite, how to get them started, what program to choose for them, and how to run a successful challenge group. You will be given all the tools that helped me to be successful so that you do not have to re-invent the wheel. You will be given my 90 day challenge group structure, 30 day Shakeology and Clean Eating Group information, along with other valuable business building tools. You will not have to figure it out on your own. You do not run your first challenge group by yourself. Instead you are an apprentice coach in your first group. I run the challenge but you get to invite 3-5 customers into the group!




WILL I HAVE TO PURCHASE PRODUCTS FOR RESALE?
Unlike marketing programs that require you to buy a lot of products in order to participate, the Coach Opportunity has no inventory requirements. If you do want to purchase products for your own use or resale, you’ll get them at a significant discount.
I encourage everyone to be a product of the product. I truly believe that the best coaches are the one's that are actively working out and are drinking Shakeology. It's very hard to speak from experience and guide other people if you yourself have never tried it.

HOW DOES BEACHBODY PROMOTE ITS PRODUCTS?
