How we trim matters.

When I first started trimming, I can remember some of my instructors using a flat metal horse shoe to set on the bottom of the hoof I just trimmed to see if it was “balanced”. If there was daylight under any part of the shoe or there was a slope to it, he would say the hoof wasn’t balanced.

Literally tens of thousands of hooves later I respectfully roll my eyes at that. When you trim a hoof like a table top for balance, you are missing a BIG piece. First the quarters are meant to be passive. That definitely does not mean we “carve or relieve them”. It means we simply follow what the sole is doing because “the sole mirrors the coffin bone”. When we leave the quarters room to expand, when the hoof is loaded, we prevent cracking, and splitting. But…. This will cause a sliver of daylight under a metal horse shoe. Next thing, and this is big, you can have perfect table top balance, but terrible medial / lateral balance.

I see this probably more than any imbalances. If you draw a line down the center of the hoof from the toe, down through the central sulcus, you can get a quick look to see how well your M/L balance is. All horses have a wear pattern. Some will load hard medially with very little wear on the lateral side of their hoof. Some will wear the exact opposite and some will wear almost perfect.

The problem happens when you trim the hoof, and lower it instead of shortening it. Sometimes you have to do both, depending on the length of the hoof. But… if you carve out the sole (which we shouldn’t be doing in most cases) to have hoof wall above that you flat nipper away, then you lowered your hoof. The imbalance of what they have not worn is still there. If you leave leverage forces there, that are not getting worn down, it will create more loading on the side that was already carrying more load. If you do this long enough, you can cause changes to the bones. If you would like to know about what this means and how to prevent distortions that can cause bony changes come check out a class.

I have to say, I have the best job in the world. I get to help horses, and work with the stewards that are trying to do the best for them, by learning new things. Even if some of the stewards are very seasoned horse people. That’s because the best of the best know they never know enough!
With that said, I want to give a shout out to all of the lovers of these great animals, that have stepped way outside of their comfort zone to ask why, followed by how! Not only have these students of the horse asked those questions, they practiced what they learned! Examples of this are owners(who really know they don’t “own” anything so majestic) that feel something is not right about the way their horse is moving, come to class and see what long toes look like and the damage they cause. They go back ask questions, when nothing changes they start rasping back the toes, only to find out the horse is moving better and is actually looking forward to the trim! Boarding barn owners that care enough about their boarders that they themselves come to class, to learn more about proper trims, and horse keeping, to be able guide their boarders, and help them where needed. Horse owners that are constantly told, “this is just the his feet are”  They start digging and find out that this isn’t true. They come to class, understand the anatomy, learn the techniques, start trimming their own horses, only to find out, how close of a bond it has built between them and their horse. Then (I smile big about this) the horse owner that comes to class, “just to do their own”. A year later they are doing their own plus the neighbors, their friends, and thinking about it professionally.
The truth about this is, It is never just about trimming! It is about finding your voice to help your horse, in a safe environment of like minded people. It’s about being a part of a tribe, that cares about each other and celebrates your achievments, that feels your frustration over less than perfect outcomes, and that mourns with you over losses.
Anyway, I was feeling super blessed today, about my job, my students, clients, colleagues, and wanted to give y’all a glimpse into our group. A group that makes me proud everyday!

I have had horses almost all of my life. I have done many things wrong, and traditional. I have trusted professionals to help me with my horses from the age of 6 to now. The professionals ranged from trainers, vets, dentists, chiropractors, bodyworkers, hoof care, and hoof care instructors, and more. Some were good, some were bad, and some were amazing! Two things were certain. One truth is I have learned something from every person I have encountered professional or not. Some of these things were things I would like to learn more about and practice, and some were things I never would plan on doing! The second thing I learned was, those who were amazing, were the ones that were excited about their job, and wanted to share with me what they were doing and why. They encouraged questions.
When I started trimming, I had learned about hooves, not really much else, but certainly enough to know what I had been doing the past 30 years of my life was incorrect. So knowing more and more was my goal. I have a craving to understand everything horse. After working with thousands of horses and their owners, I have decided I have 2 passions in my work. First is always the opinion of the horse, what they say about my work is the most important thing to me. Second is empowering the owners to know without question, they have EVERY right to ask questions. WHY being one of the most important questions. If you want to know more about horses hooves and how they affect the body, all the while gaining knowledge and empowering yourself by having a voice.
