Greetings! Diving in...

This is Ana Maria Selvaggio, CSTS/Global Steering Committee Lead and fka Captain Nyorissa Kel of the Kentucky Browncoats.

CSTS is evolving, We need our Captains at the table to support reframing CSTS as a resource for our global community.

It's no surprise that the last few years have taken their toll. Our Global Event Coordinator’s last month was December 2023 and the other members of our Global Steering Committee stepped down without replacements. As the last active member of CSTS, I have enlisted aid from California and we are overhauling CSTS with input from our global community.

EVENTS
This does not threaten any group holding CSTS events. In fact, the goal is to further support your groups as a part of the global community.

Three changes I will let you in on now for those already working on events:

You no longer need to go through the CSTS site to register your events. There will be a few suggested guidelines and your Captains will be able to weigh in on changes.

All events still require a 100% charitable donation under the old guidelines, HOWEVER, Equality Now is an option but no longer mandatory. We want you to invest in your own communities and the causes that are meaningful to you.

We are creating a global calendar of events on the CSTS site. Fill out the second/Events link below to list your event details. We'll be encouraging all groups to cross-pollinate.

That said, let's make this happen! We aim to misbehave…

CALLING ALL CAPTAINS
I am sending a signal to all Captains, whether you are actively holding events or not, to join the CSTS 2.0 Slack to craft a revised and renewed global resource for everyone. If you are the acting Captain for your group, please fill out the form at this link to be added to Slack, our new Captains hub.

EVENTS CALENDAR
If you're planning events, please continue! Make sure to let us know all the details here so that we can add you to the new global calendar and support you!

https://forms.gle/1CV8fPnE3T1TwS4W9

QUERIES
This is a massive undertaking so please be patient a little longer. However, if you have questions that cannot wait, please send them directly to me at [email protected] - this is my direct email, had it before I found CSTS 8 years ago - and please include the exact subject line "CSTS query". Do not contact CSTS through the site or social pages as it will end up in limbo in the Special Hell.

Captains will have access to further resources once in the Slack hub.

EVERYTHING IN GRATITUDE
Thank you for keeping the spirit of our beloved fandom and ‘verse alive and thriving. We could not do this without you and we're all looking forward to creating better ways to support you, strengthen the fandom, and move forward on track and inclusively.

Still flyin',
Ria / Kel

Nǐ hǎo, Browncoats!

With new cities registering for shindigs around the globe, we though we'd start a discussion about new ideas, venue suggestions and fundraising options in an ever changing world. Sometimes organizers get into a rut and fret over the idea that a perfect event has to be held in a certain type of venue, but new ideas spring up all the time.

Take those cities which chased after drive-in theaters during COVID, to create events where people could attend, but in the isolated safety of their own vehicles while chatting via online aps. This is just one example of creative thinking.

We've had affiliate events at pubs, weddings, Chinese restaurants, slip n' slide swimming parties, campgrounds, beaches and individual homes. Potluck dinners, theater screenings and virtual shindigs are all viable ways to gather people together and celebrate the fandom while doing good works.

If you have any questions or interesting suggestions, please share them here, and feel free to ask for advice privately if you prefer. We're happy to help!

Nǐ hǎo, Browncoats! Cities have begun registering for fundraising events around the world. If you'd like to host a CSTS event in your area, please drop us a line here and we'll reach out by post or private message to talk shop and get you the answers that you need.

Organizers (new and old) are sometimes daunted by the idea that an event has to follow a certain format at a certain type of venue, but creative solutions and ideas pop up all the time.

For example...Kentucky chased after a drive-in theater during the COVID epidemic, with everyone attending in their private vehicles and chatting using online aps.

We've had CSTS weddings, affiliate events in Chinese restaurants and a slip n' slide swimming shindigs. New ideas pop up all the time and this is a good place to make suggestions and ask for advice.

CSTS 2023 Art Contest

We've received a lot of positive feedback about the changes to Can't Stop the Serenity going forward, and to keep that momentum moving, we're happy to announce our 2023 art logo contest! Participants have from now until the 28th of January to create a design. While we won't be using the Equality Now combination logo going forward, we strongly recommend the use of the round 'Serenity' logo in the design where possible.

Please share this with your artist friends and drop us a line with any questions. You can also find suggestions and samples of past artwork here...

We are super pleased to bring you this year's Can't Stop the Serenity logo!

For many reasons we weren't able to run a full art competition this year but needed something to illustrate the CSTS 2022 season.

Steering Committee member Ria (Aka Renmeleon) is an extremely talented designer so she kindly put this together for us. Ria explains ""Love keeps her in the air when she ought fall' struck so many chords with me this year. Words like love, kindness, compassion, and family carry a little more weight these days as we all focus on the things that matter. I went with a simple, clean style because 'less complicated' seems to be the comfort vibe this year. I love my Browncoats community so I am both humbled and thrilled to be able to do this. Thank you!".

As Ria's design shows, love is indeed keeping us in the air, but how we keep flying is something we, as a global team, feel we all need to talk about. Over the coming months we'll be talking to you, the Browncoat community, about what CSTS might look like in coming years.

So please put your pretty floral thinking bonnets on and consider what your crew wants and needs from a global team, and watch out for our signal.

The History of Can't Stop the Serenity · Can't Stop the Serenity 14/07/2022

On this day in 2005, most of the Firefly cast appeared at Comic Con in San Diego. Fans there created an amazing fan table and raised over $12,000 for Equality Now. A fan out of Portland, Oregon (known as The One True b!X) would build on this idea to form ‘Can’t Stop the Serenity’ the following year, with charity screenings around the world (http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/about/history/).

The History of Can't Stop the Serenity · Can't Stop the Serenity 2006: “Can’t Stop the Serenity” (or CSTS for short) started in 2006 by a man known as The One True b!X in Portland, Oregon. This very avid fan decided to show Serenity on Joss Whedon’s birthday as a charity event to raise money for one of Joss’ favorite charities that his late mother was i...

We get asked this question all the time...

"How can I host an event?"

Easy. Contact us here and we'll help you get one going. You can do a large gathering at a theater (if you have the local numbers to support that) or you can host a smaller affiliate event at a park, in your home, at a local restaurant, etc. If you have the will, we have the tools and advice to make it happen.
