🌞Sunshine vibe alert!🌞 More surprises from West Coast Balearic pioneers Projections (aka Woolfy vs Projections), who reveal a fresh dubwise seam to their output with the forthcoming disco reggae & roots EP ‘Echophonic’.
The new 4-tracker makes known what those who’ve followed the producers’ work closely, for example Woolfy’s collab with Lexx on the digi-reggae jammer ‘Too Hot’, might have sussed already: that the influence of reggae & dub looms large, both in the studio and in recent performances.
Dan Hastie’s keys and Simon “Woolfy” James’ skanking guitar are joined by contributions from vocalist Malik Moore and a clutch of other players, honing a sound already earning comparisons to Mike Fabulous, Lord Echo & The Black Seeds. As Dan Tyler, Idjut Boy and recent dub remixer extraordinaire (as NAD) for Emotional Rescue’s Konduko reissue series, notes, “Sounds like the real deal, no less!”. Other DJs in full support include the likes of Lexx, Paul Murphy, Eddie C, and Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy, who premiered the title cut on her Balearic Breakfast (heatwave special 🥵) show a couple of weeks back.

“When I was growing up in a village in Surrey, UK, Bowie’s album ‘Hunky Dory’ never left our record player. Since then I’ve always associated my memories of small town England, milkmen 'n all, with David's songwriting, particularly on that album. The intention in ‘When We Were Kings’ was to capture that feeling. Lyrically the song reflects a period later in my life where I found my closest companions to be West Hollywood street boys, drag queens, and the other fantastic walks of life that society had cast away. So many adventures, wild times to say the least. And Bowie was still playing on the radio. The song closes with disbelief that he’s gone. “I wrote this for you, Superman. I certainly would never try to fill your shoes, but would you mind if tried them on for the day?” Oh what a day.”

The first of the remixes of ‘Shooting Stars’ is from ex-Poolside founder member Turbotito. His take sets the vocal to emotive lead guitar lines wound around an infectious marimba groove that becomes progressively acid-laced as it goes on.
For their remix, Django Django isolate the rebel chants from the original, which are re-cast at a slow drawl to rumbling beats and synth noise by the four-piece’s drummer and producer Dave Maclean.
‘Shooting Stars’ has received overwhelming support from radio, indie press, and selected DJs.
