There are a few hallmark reasons why the youth you work with are not connecting or responding to your intervention no matter how hard you try.
1. The goals are not relevant or effective (another discussion for another time)
2. The activity and/or approach isn't culturally appropriate or relevant to not only their needs but their interestsโผ๏ธโผ๏ธ
SOOOOOOOO...
Starting next week, I will be doing Live reviews of products, games, toys etc. that can be culturally or clinically modified to use in your therapy sessions. Head to my stories or comment here any games, toys, tpt material you would like me to review. Visit my bio for the live reminder each week.
This week while holding goal development consultation meetings with some clinicians and an educator... I've heard far too often the reason they "wrote a goal that way" despite what the data said about the youth's ability was because of the youth's age and not wanting them to feel like the goal was childish...
I want to Reiterate that most times when an individual thinks a goal is childish, it's really the approach or activity being used that they are referring to and NOT the skill they need..
So, let's reflect on the differences between Cognitive age, Chronological Age, and Communicative Age... they are not the same and should be recognized with all goals.
Does your SMART GOAL go beyond the basic Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timebound?
There us a difference between a goal that is realistic v. one that is also relevant...
There is a difference between a goal that is Realistic v. one that is also Appropriately for that specific student at that time...
There is a difference between a goal that is timebound and presented multiple times v. one that is tested to make sure it is worth continuing...
What does your SMART GOAL look like?
I hate to break it to some of you (educators and clinicians) who use visual graph8c aids to teach things like story mapping, main idea, writing narratives etc.
You may be the problem. All materials and tools don't work for any and all youth. Sometimes the therapeutic instruments you use can create burdens and barriers to learning...
Tap in!
Being Black in America is denying your post because it has "bad grammar" ... a shame Black English isn't recognized or RESPECTED on a platform as large as this.
Taking my intelligence and talent elsewhere very soon. If you don't already have please make you an account, accessing my content will required over there.
Was watching Hart To Heart show where he interviewed Jay Z and he made a statement that was an Aha moment for me.
It's facts that I didn't learn about Emotional Intelligence and how it impacted my actions and decisions until graduate school and now when I reflect on ALL the wild sh*t I did or got involved in as a youth/teen it all makes sense๐ค
Let's change this narrative for the next generation. BOTH Black girls and Boys deserve intentional focus on introducing and stabilizing their Emotional Intelligence skills.
Let's dialogue about it...
This is from the mouth of someone actually living it... I get that many are interested in working in the carceral space and we need to provide help there. But don't forget about the impact you can make from the academic space BEFORE they ever have an unfortunate chance to see the inside of these hell holes.
WHEN I TELL YALL THE DIFFERENCE IS MADE FOR SOME BEFORE THEY REACH THE CARCERAL SPACE, IT'S REAL.
THIS IS WHY I PROMOTE . FIGHT THE FROM YOUR SPACE AS A SCHOOL-BASED SLP PLEASE ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ

Next up is parent presence required at the outset of discussing potential IEP related matters. These rights are procedural safeguards under FAPE thar MUST be followed by the public school districts โผ๏ธ Share Share Share
When I say Black and Latinx/Latine, Afro-Latino/Latina students/people are the most marginalized... Here is example 1 of manyโผ๏ธ You can find the practice of oppression, marginalization, and racism in ALL areas of United States practices for these races IT NEVER FAILS. It's not just history we're still dealing with it in the present.
๐ฃIf we're not afforded the same opportunities for quality education - we're left to sink or swim. Sometimes the behaviors youth exhibit is because the work is not challenging or the environment does not cultivate their interests and social desires. ๐ฃ
SO please note when I make these posts and statements its not a disregard to the experiences of other marginalized races. It's a reminder and cry for recognition for MY RACE because we're always disproportionately treated, represented, disregarded with little change OR action.

Today June 16 2022 marks another day in US history where they criminalized the body of a young Black child. THE youngest person- Specifically a 14 year old Black male... was executed by electric chair in the US FOR A CRIME HE DIS NOT COMMIT. Way before brain development, maturity, or his ability to complete High School.
Have you listened to the Cognitive Capacity Podcast Episode. 2 to hear the story of George Stinney? Link in bio (linktr.ee).
Primarily we solely talk about DEI from a systemic or large institution or corporate perspective.
โผ๏ธ BUT it's necessary how DEI is important and most times absent at the micro level - individuallyโผ๏ธ
DEI is an important part and necessity of clinical assessment, intervention, advocacy and preparation.
โ๏ธyou want to Combat the School-to-confinement pipeline??! Well tap in and make sure you are consistently doing and reflecting on this at the personal level ๐๐ฝ
I am so excited to see how the participants of this intensive training develops and implements this information into their CSD Courses โผ๏ธโผ๏ธ
The students that will benefit from this course are in for a treat ๐
Inaugural training and Cohort completed and it was great! ๐ช๐ฝ๐๐ฝ
It's time to have the hard BUT real conversation now as we SADLY prepare the youth we work with to just survive another school day ๐๐
It's time to have the hard BUT real conversation of what we discuss and address in therapy has to take a rapid change. pushing into the classroom or generalizing a skill has a different meaning now as we SADLY prepare the youth we work with to just survive another school day ๐๐ *watch entire Video in Soapbox Series in Profile*
This is why you have to be mindful about what you write and what you allow yourself to read about Black Youth.
Adultifying youth is a dehumanizing process of underhanded getting you to perceive youth as less innocent, vulnerable, and less worthy of a humanistic consideration because they'll term them as adults while white youth are always portrayed in a light that humanize and protects them as "innocent".
The power of how words are used can create or confirm your bias โผ๏ธ
A Dynamic Assessment is a MUST for youth with cultural and language differences not readily supported by standardized assessments.
A dynamic Assessment means including more than the evaluation protocols. There should also be the inclusion of components of the youth's culture and ability and how they function in their natural environment so that you have a better understanding of what is normal or common for them and how that works with the language skills you are assessing.
Remember that sometimes the disconnect or difficulty may be that your trauma is clashing with the youth's creating more trauma or situations that are burdening their process.
You colleagues, professionals, future clinicians MUST address and take care of your Mental Health and trauma first before you can expect and help the youth to do something different.
Too often the system is chomping at the bit to punish, suspend, arrest and stifle the development of Black Youth.
Too often we take the easy and damaging road instead of turning situations into positive and creating teaching moments for youth who are still developing and maturing.
You giving more teaching moments will be effective in combating the school-to-confinement pipeline. How often do you turn situations into productive teaching moments?
The proof is in the pudding. Participant feedback and testimonials are vital and important to our (.d and I) growth and ability to present the information in a manner that is comprehensible to all...
So you've read a few testimonies there are many more where this came from! What are you waiting for to attend the upcoming CEU events?
LOCK IN AND
Let's talk about SUSCEPTIBILITY in youth with CCD and how you can perpetuate negative interactions that harm them and not help them...
As I prepare to speak at the Hawaii Speech and Hearing Association Conference... just a reminder you are not less liable for what a child has experienced in the school system just because you did not CAUSE the action. Not stopping the action is just as bad... *old story from 2103.
Pre-K to Confinement pipeline. Another area we have to dig into and discuss. A lot of the youth we serve have been criminalized and their futures decided for them since the day they entered the education setting.
Let's be intentional and do something different.
