We hope you will join us for the November Caregivers Education Group. Dr. Julie Masters, PhD. will be discussing The Value of Love in Caring for Others.
During her presentation she will share that to be a caregiver requires a willingness to love unconditionally. She said it also requires us to find places where we can feel loved and appreciated so we can continue in our role. She shared that this talk will focus on how we benefit from outside sources of support in our efforts to provide care to those we love.
Dr. Masters is a professor and chair of the department of gerontology at the University of Nebraska Omaha. She holds the Terry Haney Chair of Gerontology. She teaches courses on the Lincoln campus. She also supervises honors students and doctoral students interested in end of life issues. Having walked the family caregiver journey personally makes her even more caring and compassionate about caregiving.

Dr. Bob Bleicher will be presenting "The Role of a DNR in End-of-Life Care: A Physician’s Perspective”
Dr. Bob Bleicher is the Medical and Executive Director at HoriSun Hospice in Lincoln, Nebraska. He has practiced medicine and provided hospice medical direction in Lincoln for over thirty years. He has strong beliefs in compassionate care with attention to patients' and families' physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. He is board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pulmonary Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Bleicher is a Certified Dementia Practitioner. This presentation will discuss the medical details of a DNR, and the benefits of hospice.

This is the third virtual workshop presented in 2023 sponsored by the Nebraska Caregiver Coalition to provide information to caregivers. It is titled “Positive Caregiving: Harnessing the Power of Positive Emotions in the Caregiving Journey” presented by Dr. Sarah Teten Kanter, Ph.D. It will be held from 12:00pm to 1:00pm CT. You will receive a meeting ID and/or information to join on Zoom when you register. There will be one more presentation coming in November and I will send information about it later.
The presentation will focus on the following points:
*How to harness the power of positive emotions in your caregiving journey
*The four pillars of positive caregiving: perspective, savoring, reminiscence and growth
*Incorporating gratitude, empathy, forgiveness, love, and awe into your daily routine
*Positive practices for all caregiving scenariios: new/sudden caregivers, part-time and full-time caregivers, and caregivers to loved ones living in a care community
*Practicing micro-moments of positive self-care for caregivers
Dr. Kanter is on a mission to help people embrace the gift of growing older. She focuses on making caregiving and care receiving a positive experience and an opportunity for personal growth. She has written a book titled “Positive Caregiving” which offers an alternative, positive perspective and provides an accessible, research-based path for people who want to make the most of the caregiving experience. The presentation for May 23rd entitled Dealing With Dementia will be given by Gayleen Bradley. Gayleen is administrator of Orchard Park but is also certified to teach about dementia. She will be sharing tips and techniques for caregivers, families, neighbors, and friends who are caring for someone with any of the dementias, including Alzheimer’s Disease. As I have shared with you she has over 13 years of personal and professional experience in senior and dementia care as well as facilitating two support groups a month. She will also bring resource books. These offer even more resource contacts. As our population ages there is an increasing need for caregivers as well as information and resources for all of us to help others.
The Caregiver Education Group sponsors meetings for caregivers held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30pm CT. We were able to help a number of caregivers last year and hope to be able to help even more this year with your help.
Support the Caregiver Relief Fund now through May 24th and your gifts are eligible for the Challenger Match Fund! This always helps to increase the amount to the Fund.
If you wish to write a check make it payable to the Lincoln Community Foundation and put the Caregiver Relief Fund in the memo line. You may drop off your check or mail it to the Lincoln Community Foundation office at 215 Centennial Mall South, Lincoln NE 68508 but it must be postmarked by May 17th so it is received by the May 24th deadline.
We really are counting on your help this year. Any amount will help. On behalf of the caregivers you will be helping, thank you so much.

🚨 Take Action! Protect Resident Voting Rights 📣
Nebraska Health Care Association is coming to you today with an urgent request to submit letters to protect the voting rights of Nebraska seniors in nursing homes and assisted living communities across the state.
We need your voice! Please help us gather as many letters as possible from residents or their family members describing the importance of protecting their right to vote. Scan and email the letters to [email protected] with the subject line "Voter ID" or fax them to 402-475-6289.
Letters are due by tomorrow, Jan. 31, at 5:00 p.m. CT, to allow NHCA time to include them in our testimony at the Wednesday hearing on LB535.

The Caregiver Education Group meeting for caregivers is the fourth Tuesday of the month – October 25th - at 1:30pm at Gere Library, 2400 S 56th Street. The presentation will be given by Mark Sunderman, PT, GCS Director of Rehabilitation at Eastmont. Mark will be talking about Posture Perfection! He will share how to learn the benefits of focusing on posture. As a caregiver with your attention on what’s beneficial for the one you are caring for, you often forget how important it is to take care of yourself and remain healthy so you can continue as a caregiver for your loved one. Mark has a wealth of information to share so put the date on your calendar and plan to attend. There will be time for questions following Mark’s presentation. Several of the Education Group members will be there to answer questions and work with you as well.
Everyone is welcome to attend. You do not need to register. There will be folders of information/resources for each attendee. Masks are encouraged but not required. Treats and water will be provided. There is plenty of parking and the room is readily accessible.
Congratulations to Suzy Campbell on being named the Coalition for Older Adult Health Promotion Volunteer of the Year. We are so proud of you and thankful for all you do for the caregiver community.
