‼️Jeanerette Tigers make first quarterfinal run in three decades‼️

JEANERETTE - Thanksgiving football is a phrase that hasn't been hear around Jeanerette High School in more than three decades.

It was 1991, 32 years ago, when the Tigers reached the quarterfinals of the Class 3A playoffs and fell 16-13 to Buras High School, which is now part of South Plaquemines High School.

"That '91 team was very good," Current Jeanerette assistant coach and former Jeanerette head coach Zeb Simon, said. "We had the talent to win the state title that year. In fact, Buras ended up winning the state championship that year so it gives you an idea of the type of game it was."

Simon added that Jeanerette had the ball in the fourth quarter of that game with less than two minutes left, inside the Buras 5 yard line but a mishandle of the snap led to a fumble and Buras recovered the ball and held on for the win.

That 1991 team set the school record for regular season wins with 9 and the total overall record with `11 wins.

Three decades later, Jeanerette (10-2) is back in the quarterfinals for the first time since that '91 season as the N. 5 seed. The Tigers will travel Friday to face No. 4 seed Haynesville (11-1) in the Non-select Division IV quarterfinals.

"It's been a magical season so far," Jeanerette senior defensive end Treville Frederick, a Tulane commit) said. "We thought that we had a chance to be good this year but now we're being mentioned in the same breath as that 1991 team and we have a chance to go further than they did."

Frederick had a big part in the Tigers' 8-2 and in the two playoff wins too get to this point.

"It's been a long, long time since Jeanerette football has played on the day after Thanksgiving," head coach C.C. Paul said. "It's an amazing feeling to be practicing Thanksgiving week and to be playing the day after Thanksgiving.

"These kids have worked hard over the spring, summer and fall to get to this point. And the best part is that not too many people expected us to make it this far but we believed that we could."

With eight regular season wins, Jeanerette has tied the 1992 team for the second most wins in school history and with 10 wins overall, the 2023 team stands one win behind tying that 1991 team for most overall wins in school history.

The Tigers have done it on bothsides of the ball this year.

Jeanerette has scored an average of 25 points per game and has given up just under 14 points per game.

Jeanerette's defense has held six of their 12 opponents to less than 10 points this year.

"We knew coming into the season that our defense was going to be our strong point," Paul said. "And it's proven true.”

"We just didn't know if our offense was going to come around. But the offense developed quicker than we expected and we've been able to play complementary football this year."

Frederick has been a big part of that for the TIgers as the Jeanerette senior, while having fewer individual stats this season as compared to his junior season, has been a more dominant force on the defensive side of the ball.

"We've been better as a team this year than last year," Frederick said. "No one on the team feels that they have to carry the load. I knew that if I make a mistake, there was someone there to back me up to make the play.

"It's led to us playing better football as a team."

Friday's game will be the biggest challenge of the season for the Tigers with a long bus trip ahead of them.

"I know that will be a long trip and it will present a challenge for us," Paul said. "But I knew that so far this team has taking the appreoach that every game is a business trip and that this is just another trip for us to take care of business.”

"The seniors have taking the leadership roll in that and I know that's how we are going to approach the game. If we can do that Friday, then let the chips falls where they may."

KBZE has been granted permission to broadcast the Central Catholic Game against Southern Lab, but on our FM only. Our pre-game will be at 6:50 pm, with KBZE Sports Director Seth Thomas calling the game.
