I moved from the Bay Area to become Director of University Extension at Portland State in 1979 and began working with the one year old Instruction and Training Technology Certificate Program, restricted for years just for Tektronix employees. (I later taught in that program for 30+ years.) In 1980, I joined the Oregon chapter of the American Society for Training and Development at the request of the 1979 ASTD President David Morrisson at Tek.

When I became chapter President in 1983, we made a strong case for hosting the ASTD regional conference in 1986 with Jack Kondrasuk chairing our committee and Dave and Rob Russell handling marketing. Among our prominent general session speakers were the nationally popular Portland Mayor Bud Clark. With 400 attending, it was an energizing and extraordinary educational event.

Years later, Jack formed a Men's Group with Rob, Dave and me as charter members. That group continues in its fourth decade.

ASTD is now ATD and joining the Oregon Organization Development Network (I'm on the Board) for a similar conference:

Michael McNally, former US Ambassador to Russia, on Rachel Maddie’s Monday show, is seriously disturbed that Trump’s threat to desert a NATO ally is generating such a muted response. While Nikki Haley says Trump is taking the side of a thug who kills his opponents, most GOP national security and elected officials treat his remarks “to encourage Russia to do anything they damn well please” as empty rhetoric. They overlook Putin’s interview with Tucker Carlson when he mentioned Poland repeatedly and blamed the Poles - as American fascists did in 1939 - for starting WWII. Will poland be putin’s next target?

Putin invaded Crimea and then the rest of Ukraine. McNally says the leaders of Latvia, Lithuanian and Estonia are seeing invasion as part of Putin’s long term strategy to revive the Soviet Union. We can support our friends’ fighters now or repeat the evils spawned by appeasement prior to WWII.

Please share this post with those who don’t connect the dots. Some day they may. Some will lobby their senators and representatives to send Ukraine the arms they need to stop Russia now.

“It's late, and maybe in the morning I'll delete this post, but I've just got home and for now I need to write this down.
Earlier this evening I received a message from a homeowner to say they had a swarm of bees in their hedge, but they were worried about them because children had been throwing water at them.
By the time my fellow beekeeper and I arrived, what had been a beautiful prime swarm was reduced to a few hundred drenched bees, huddling limply around their queen.
I've already deleted the photos of the puddles of water, the dripping wet hedge, and the many, many dead and dying bees that hadn't been able to escape the attack; sharing those pictures serves no purpose.
We gently placed the bees that had survived into a collection box, and hopefully tomorrow, when they've had a chance to dry out and settle, we'll check on them and if necessary feed them; they'll be exhausted and possibly (understandably) defensive. They've been through a lot.
Please, please, help me to educate your children, your grandchildren, your nieces and nephews, your neighbors, your colleagues, and your friends that a swarm of bees isn't dangerous - they're amazing creatures that are just looking for a new home.
Please don't let anyone harm them. Just call a beekeeper who will gladly rehome them.

I would like to take the time to introduce everyone to miss Parham. she is a 2 month old beautiful baby girl. last night I was dispatched to a residence to a child choking, it was this beautiful little princess. she was turning blue and fading fast.. mom and dad tried cpr with no luck and when I arrived she was not breathing. the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY touched me and I knew what to do. I did reverse cpr and was able to suck the cereal out of her throat and she began breathing again. she smiled at me for a second and then starting crying which was music to my ears. out of my 25 years being a cop this is my greatest and most profound accomplishment and it made every second of those 25 years worth it all. I am forever humbled and changed by this. little miss Parham will forever be a part of my life...
