Lipid lowering nutraceuticals in clinical practice: position paper from an International Lipid Expert Panel 04/08/2017

The first recommendations on the lipid disorders therapy with nutraceuticals from the International Lipid Expert Panel (ILEP). It is a critical paper, which summarizes the current state of knowledge and indicates the nutraceuticals, which might have the greatest benefit in dyslipidemic patients and might be considered in: (1) primary prevention in individuals at the risk still not on the statin therapy; (2) in patients not on the lipid goal of the therapy as an add-on to statin therapy; (3) in patients with mixed dyslipidemia, including atherogenic dyslipidemia due to the influence of nutraceuticals on different lipid parameters, and finally (4) in patients with statin-associated side effects/statin intolerance. We also strongly emphasize that nutraceuticals cannot replace pharmacotherapy, and only help to optimize the therapy in order to achieve the LDL-C/lipid goals based on the risk stratification. Taking this opportunity I would like to thank to all European societies that endorsed the Position Paper as well as to all experts who have worked on this important paper. Special thanks to prof. Arrigo Cicero, who has initiated this idea. This paper will be published in parallel in Nutrition Reviews. Have a nice reading!

High blood pressure has minimal impact on mortality risk in elderly: Study 22/05/2017

Having chronically high blood pressure (hypertension) can eventually lead to problems like heart disease, which is one of the world’s most common causes of death. But according to a study at Oregon State University, elevated blood pressure was not found to be a high mortality risk for elderly individuals with a weak grip.

According to an article published in the World Journal on Cardiology: Hypertension in the elderly.

"The elderly are the most rapidly growing population group in the world. Data collected over a 30- year period have demonstrated the increasing prevalence of hypertension with age. The risk of coronary artery disease, stroke, congestive heart disease, chronic kidney insufficiency and dementia is also increased in this subgroup of hypertensives. Hypertension in the elderly patients represents a management dilemma to cardiovascular specialists and other practioners".

Molecular mechanisms of statin intolerance 23/05/2016

The phenomenon of statin intolerance/statin-associated side effects is still a matter of high debate concerning its causality, pathomechanisms, possibilities of prediction with sensitve biomarkers, as well as suitable management. In this article we focused on the possible molecular mechanisms of statin intolerance. It is one of 6 papers from our group, which will be presented on this issue by the end of the year. Have a nice reading!

Molecular mechanisms of statin intolerance Statins reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in primary and secondary prevention. Despite their efficacy, many persons are unable to tolerate statins due to adverse events such as hepatotoxicity and myalgia/myopathy. In the case of most patients, it seems that mild-to-moderate...
