Girlhood On T - R&D Sharing & Q&A at Island, The 26/08/2024

Following their residency with us Aish Humphreys and Eryn McDonald are sharing the research and development process of their theatre piece Girlhood On T, followed by a Q&A session.

This event is free and takes place in our Gallery 28th September, 7pm.

Girlhood on T is a spoken word theatre piece in which two trans/non-binary people discuss their experiences of girlhood, transness and masculinity from the safety of a bedroom. Featuring costume changes, lip-syncing, and an informative presentation on a breast condition, the work aims to give audiences an insight into a little corner of the transmasculine/butch/non-binary experience.

Doors at 7pm, with the performance starting at 7:30pm. Free soft drinks available in the space. The show will then be followed by a short Q&A session, after which the audience will be invited to leave feedback via QR code or sticky notes.

Written and performed by Aish Humphreys and Eryn McDonald

In Bristol this week?

will be part of the Primary Source group exhibition, organised and curated by in our gallery 26th - 28th July.

She says:
"The show’s theme, ‘Primary Source,’ fits perfectly with my 2023 publication, 'New York 1986,' with . It draws from my childhood memories of sitting with my dad, longingly looking through his Royal Navy photo album. Among the tantalising images and postcards, one stood out—a postcard of lower Manhattan sent to my grandparents in 1958. That postcard ignited my dream to visit New York.

Fast forward to the late '80s, and for my MA in photography, I decided it was the perfect time to fulfill that dream. Armed with a Canon AE-1 and a backpack full of b/w film, I embarked on an adventure that has stayed with me ever since.

I’m just sad that dad can’t see how that one postcard inspired all of this. Dad, you are my greatest source of inspiration, in the past, present, and future."

Exhibiting alongside artists Amy Vik, Bliss Ashley, Claire Selman, Hannah Hornby, Jacky Chapman, Liv Jackson, Liv Stocking, Badga, Sam Bland, and Zain Al-Sharaf Wahbeh.

Our Story

The Island is a self-funded multi-use arts facility and creation centre based in the old police station in Bristol city centre. It hosts a wide variety of creative spaces from circus training, dance and rehearsal rooms, making spaces and artists studios to dark rooms, recording and music production studios, a gallery and a suite of early 20th century police cells. We can’t believe that in 2018 we turn 10 years old!

If you want to get involved in a collaborative showcase event in Bristol then the Island is the place to do it. Like the name suggests, the Island is an isolated centre of creativity and energy located smack bang in the city centre. As a venue, it has many unique event spaces and a can-do attitude making it ideal for a Bristol event.

The Island comes to life thanks to its vibrant programming of regular workshops, training classes, performances and events. Artists from all disciplines now occupy our spaces; people from all walks of life can host their own exhibitions, or start their own class or group, which creates a widely varied collection of artist-led projects.

The Island is majorly involved with Bristol's art scene, having taken part in BS1 Open, Brisfest, Destination Bristol, Big Green Week, Mayfest and Bristol Biennial,. We are rapidly becoming one of the key locations of choice for local art promotion.

As well as all this, The Island is now hosting around 79 working artists. These artists are the beating heart of The Island, continually producing and showcasing new and engaging artwork. This made The Island one of the liveliest and most thriving artist communities in Bristol. Our studios are of varying sizes and range from huge open spaces, to smaller solo studios, to our converted cell studios, which are exclusively used by artists who work with sound and music.

The Island is part of the Artspace Lifespace project, an artist led initiative that recycles vacant, under-used and problem properties into thriving active creative resources and has been active since 2008.
