Exciting Violet spotlight on graduating teacher resident, Heaven-Lee Allen!

Heaven-Lee Allen was working as a makeup artist when a client encouraged her to pursue her dream of teaching. She had once hoped to inspire students the way her high school teachers had inspired her, but had shelved that aspiration until her client’s nudge.

She started reading about NYU Steinhardt Teaching & Learning's Teacher Residency—a one-year program in which students earn a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) while teaching in a classroom as a resident. “When I saw that I was allowed to earn my degree and teach at the same,” Heaven-Lee recalls. “I knew I’d be crazy not to do this.”

While Steinhardt offers teacher preparation both in person and online, Heaven-Lee chose the online version for its flexibility and the opportunity for a change of scenery after spending hours in a classroom.

“I do love being in school in person, but when you work eight hours in a school building, it’s an amazing feeling to come home and do the work,” Heaven-Lee says. “Most importantly, I know my professors aren’t short-changing me. The information I'm getting, the work we're doing, the collaborative process—it might be online, but it’s nothing less than a traditional program.”

For her residency, Heaven-Lee was assigned to an eighth-grade class at Brooklyn Prospect Charter School. She had only been teaching for three months when the school needed a full-time individualized education plan teacher for students with special needs, and offered her the job. Along with that new role, she also began teaching English language arts for seventh graders.

“I really love my school. I think what I love most about my school—and this is something I valued so much growing up and I wish I had more of—is how much emphasis they put on being a trauma-informed space,” she says. “We're not walking in and saying, ‘Good morning, let's get to work.’ We're constantly checking in, asking ‘How are you feeling? What's going on at home?’ And I think it really makes a difference.”

Her commitment to student wellbeing also means Heaven-Lee has become the go-to teacher for snacks, keeping goldfish and granola bars on hand for anyone who needs an energy boost.

As a student who dreamed of having a Black female teacher, Heaven-Lee takes pride in living that dream for her classes—and she recently accepted an offer to return next year in her ELA role, after she graduates this May.

“When I'm speaking to my students, obviously, I love them all, but it really does touch me when my Black and Brown students come to me like, ‘Oh, can you give me a book recommendation?’ or, ‘Oh my god, thank you for teaching me this!’ I come home every day and I feel like I'm doing the work, I'm doing what I should be doing. It just feels very natural.”
