Go to Bad Baxter Farm to see the original post. It won’t disappoint:

“This is how I feel about backyard farmers selling their eggs for less than it costs to raise them.

You're hurting yourself by devaluing your hard work and time.

You're hurting fellow farms and homesteads who ask to be paid their worth.

You're catering to an industry that makes the consumer believe subsidized eggs are the proper cost (even though they're paying much more for those eggs via your tax dollars and health).

I value my eggs as such a nourishing & precious farm commodity that I refuse to sell them below their worth. I'd much rather nourish myself, my birds, pigs and garden than to ever devalue myself or fellow farmer/homesteader.

It all matters.” Baxter Farm

I (Joanna, “urban homesteader” here at WBUH) will add emphatically that what what you eat eats AND how the animals are treated and raised are of utmost importance.

Eggs laid by chickens in confined spaces with no or limited access to outside spaces and fed a high grain diet are NOT THE SAME as eggs laid by free ranging hens that scratch the ground, eat diverse bug salads daily, and have all the sunshine they could want.

Is it crazy to suggest that there are things more valuable in life than squeezing every last penny out of your budget (in the context of the ever-depleting-in-value dollar, no less)…like your long term health and that of your children that depend on YOU to make wise decisions about food? Yay! You saved a couple of bucks at the big box store…but at what COST? :/

When you become numb to the feelings, you're doing something wrong. What sets us apart from someone who grabs a slab of meat packed & wrapped on styrofoam or the concentrated beef operators who pack bodies in like a game of Tetris & cull hundreds a day without batting an eyelash?

Care. Feeling the raw sadness when something goes wrong. Knowing you're responsible for your food, your loved & cared for food, from birth to death. Made more painful when that death was too soon & she was one of the first ladies of your herd.

As I headed out yesterday morning to check for more babies, I found the baby less mama instead. Devastating. My beautiful day turned into a sad, calm, thought process of how best to honor her in death, as I always tried to in life. My first lamb loss in over four years of raising them. I had just sat & apologized to her the night before, looking into her eyes & telling her I can't imagine what she's gone through, the loss of babies, the trauma.

Though it was a cold night, she was already quite stiff so I broke her down for a good amount of dog food, cooking for the next 2 days to draw out all the nourishment she can provide for the two who tried to protect her. The chickens were fed, the pigs were fed & I allowed myself the rest of the day in the sun to reflect on all the feelings of life & death on the farm.

I'm sorry sweet girl.

One of my chickens stayed in the coop all day yesterday. I get it! Today should be much better for her, for us all.

Spotted an eagle nesting along the Arkansas River yesterday.

Ever wonder what all goes on in your backyard while you’re asleep?

Not so eager to come out this morning.

Great thing about chickens is their bedtime (now!). I set an alarm for every 45 minutes all throughout the day today to go out and break their ice, take them fresh water, take them extra protein, and make sure they didn’t do anything unfortunate like freezing their feet in their water. And success…everyone survived! Taking care of a small flock of chickens sure makes me appreciate the people that take care of larger herds of larger livestock.

These two must be best friends.
