Today, all of Florida has lost a true friend. We awoke to the news of the passing of former Florida Governor and Senator Bob Graham. Along with his distinguished career of service, both in public and private life, Bob Graham was a true man of the people and a genuine friend. He was a lover of Florida's environment and spent his life protecting our beautiful Florida. He was a champion of public education and the strength of our university system. He was a defender of America, courageously leading the Senate Intelligence Committee in turbulent times.

Bob Graham was an inspiration...a true example of living a life full of "Purpose and Meaning." On a personal note, he and Adele were such good family friends to Bill and me, encouraging our pursuits, following our children, campaigning with us. I'll never forget being on stage with both Bob Graham and Jimmy Buffett...two giants we have lost. But Bob's spirit, and most important, his example of a life well lived, will continue to inspire millions of Floridians.

My heartfelt sympathy to Adele, Gwen, Kendall, Cissy, and Suzanne.

It has been brought to my attention that last week our current CFO, Jimmy Patronis, appeared before the annual Florida Chamber of Commerce Insurance Summit to address the current property insurance crisis in our state. During his remarks he was critical of actions taken during my administration as CFO (2007-2011). I want to share the statement I prepared in response to his uninformed remarks. (See below)

CFO Patronis has been in office almost SEVEN years and has had ample opportunity with ever increasing budgets to advocate on behalf of Florida consumers. Instead, he dramatically reduced the hours of his consumer call center. Why he would reach back to our tenure more than twelve years ago suggests he is attempting to cover up his own failing to help the people of Florida.

My statement:
Confronted with an historic insurance crisis during his more than six-year tenure as Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, Jimmy Patronis has done nothing but favors for his insurance industry donors in response, and is failing the people of Florida who are struggling at unprecedented levels to insure their homes and businesses.

On average, Floridians who own a home are paying $6,000-per-year for insurance – that’s four times more than the national average. That’s a crisis.

In his remarks, he conveniently skipped over the fact that in 2009 Florida, and the nation, were in the grips of a financial crisis. All state budgets were being cut. In the CFO’s office we were even counting paper clips and digging through old closets for supplies to run our offices. We streamlined our physical offices to ensure we could keep answering the phones and provide better service for a better value for the people of Florida.

Our current CFO has been in office since 2017. His budgets have increased. And yet, while Floridians suffer under the highest insurance rates in history, CFO Patronis’ response has been to make it harder for consumers to hold their insurance companies accountable.

People have asked me, ‘why is Jimmy Patronis attacking you now, more than a decade after you were CFO?’ It seems he’s just looking for anything to distract from his record of failing the people of Florida on such an unprecedented scale.

The highlight of the year was the celebration of my dad's, Kester Sink, 100th birthday in September with the entire family present. The bonuses were the arrival of my third grandchild, Bryce McBride, in January and the news of a Crawford baby expected in March 2024.

As the reporting on the horrific attacks on Israel has unfolded over the past five days, I have had many memories of my two trips to Israel. On an AIPAC sponsored trip, our group was taken to a kibbutz on the Gaza border which I just learned was overrun by Hamas. We spoke to the residents and saw their houses, including the small “safe” room in each home. And just a couple of miles away, the Gaza border. The terror inflicted by Hamas is just unfathomable.

I am heartbroken for my many Jewish friends.

May we stand in solidarity with the people of Israel in their (and our) time of anguish.

How difficult it is to imagine life with no Jimmy Buffett concerts to search for. Yet, we know his music and legacy will live forever. Last week, Spectrum News had a Moms For Liberty “education forum” with Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson just before the republican debate.

Let’s be clear: Moms for Liberty was incorporated in 2021 and has ALREADY been called out for its extremism and hateful rhetoric by the Southern Poverty Law Group. They are well-funded by a handful of politicians behind “Don’t Say Gay” and so-called “parents’ rights” bills, and their talking points – from book bans to stopping discussion of race in schools – are handed down from their inner circle.

I know that the vast majority of parents – including you! – are against hate speech, banning books, and taking our schools backwards. News organizations must stop giving Moms for Liberty a platform to spread their vitriol.
