Thank you for your patience while we took a break from social media and advertising during my mother’s treatment and passing. We kept steady in the bakery with corporate and repeat customers. We appreciate your patronage and love!

Despite the sorrow we felt when my mom died, we were also able to experience so much joy. Our 3-D Cookie Cutter Creator and Chief Chocolatier, Caleb, graduated with honors from high school. He accepted multiple academic and music scholarships to the University of North Alabama and was accepted into the Honor’s College there. Roar Lions! 🦁 💜💛

Caleb will study Music Education and play clarinet in the concert band, tuba in the marching band, and cello in the orchestra. He will also continue his work with clay in the UNA Art Studio. He’s excited about landing a room in the same dormitory as his brother (our bakery’s founder), Joshua!

Caleb will close 3-D printing operations during college so he can focus on his grades, but he will still run the chocolate division when he’s home for Christmas Break!

We are proud of our son and all he has accomplished, and we look forward to hearing all about college life! He has dedicated so many years to this bakery and has a firm grasp of business, budgeting, marketing, and customer relations as he moves into adulthood. He understands the value of hard work and service to our community!

Congratulations, Chef “Buggy!” We love you and are thankful for your service to our family business and SO MUCH more!

We will post Father’s Day offerings later today!

Our family lost a giant this week. Our Mama/Grandma, Mally Hatch, lost her unexpected, heartbreaking battle with pancreatic cancer only 60 days after diagnosis.

Mama learned to bake as a child and made sure her children and grandchildren knew the craft, as well. While her passion was cooking, she also took the time to bake and often shared breads, cakes, and cookies with her students, friends, neighbors, and others in the community.

When Joshua started this bakery, his Grandma was one of his first customers. She ordered a chocolate pie (photo in comments.) She was so proud of Josh and shared this business page with everyone she knew.

As the bakery grew into a full-fledged family LLC, my mom volunteered her time to help complete orders. She called herself the “Fondant Queen” and did a lot of the cake work (photo in comments.)

She helped keep our bakery afloat. She assisted with hundreds of orders and stepped in as a substitute baker and decorator when William or Josh were in the hospital. She accompanied Josh to pop-ups all over town and was overjoyed when he (then Caleb) won “Youth Entrepreneur of the Year.” She was prayerful as we started our journey to expand to a brick and mortar building and cried with us when Covid changed our plans. She never lost faith in her grandson’s dream and reminded us God knows the plans He has for us.

My mom was also our biggest, most outspoken advocate, helping to monitor our social media and sharing lots of assertiveness with those who were cruel towards our family. Owning a small business is sometimes challenging, but mama always reminded us to focus on the hundreds of positive customers, reviews, and comments rather than the few from negative naysayers. She was our voice, backbone, and strength when we were discouraged.

Her immense desire to support her grandson, our family, and this bakery helped fuel our desire to remain open—and grow tenfold. “Who can be against you when God is for you?” she would often ask. “God will fight the battle.”

Joshua had his great-grandmother’s rolling pins, apron, and baking pans and now has his grandmother’s. Our family is woven in tradition and sentimentality. We are close-knit, even when we go through trials or disagreements, and we know forgiveness and redemption always win.

The last song we shared with our Mama/Grandma was “Amazing Grace.” As we stood around her bedside, she asked William to pray and then we sang. I said, “I love you,” she said “I know,” and Joshua stayed with her until the end. He was the last person to be with her while she was living.

So many of you knew my mom—some even through our bakery. Therefore, we thought this page would be a great way to share her final arrangements. We hope those who knew and loved her join us at her Celebration of Life.

Thank you for supporting our bakery for so many years. You have seen us through many hardships and losses, from William’s coma and Joshua’s brain surgery to the deaths of my nana, papa, dad, uncle, cousin, and so many others before my mom. You have held our hands up and helped sustain our income while we endured each battle.

We are grateful.

May my mom (and “bonus mom” to so many of her students and friends) rest in eternal peace, knowing she is free of pain and turmoil and can finally rest. There are no tears in Heaven.

Please feel free to leave comments/memories here or on her memorial at Legacy Funeral Homes website. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of the Valley in Decatur or to any public school. Thank you!

From Founder and CEO, Joshua Wortham:

Hello! (And YES—the bakery is still open!!)

It’s been a while since we have posted because we’ve been getting settled into a new school year! My parents are still teaching in two amazing public schools and I started college, so it was a big transition for my family (and for the bakery) when I left home.

I accepted a full-ride academic and other trumpet/piano scholarships to The University of North Alabama and have been enjoying my time here! I ultimately chose UNA over my other offers because of the small-town family-feel, the music department, and the music professors. My trumpet professor is also a baker, my piano professor is world-renowned and extremely humble, and the UNA Marching Band is amazing! I feel at home here and I love being here! I’m majoring in music education and hope to be a band director in 4 or 5 years! Roar Lions! 🦁 💜 💛

A lot of you have asked if the bakery will close now that I am gone and the answer is no. We are still up and running! We don’t advertise or post very much because we stay as full as we can handle with corporate, holiday, and private customer orders, but we ARE still open!

In looking back over the past almost-decade since I started the bakery, I am humbled by our continued growth. I am thankful my parents and grandparents taught me how to bake and instilled in me a sense of pride in my talents. I’m glad they encouraged me to pursue entrepreneurship. I’m grateful they modeled an attitude of gratefulness and a willingness to persevere through difficult times.

I think of all our family endured just in the years since the bakery opened and cannot believe all we were able to overcome. I know much of that is due to all of you, our faithful customers. We appreciate you! I also believe we were able to overcome because of all of the lessons we learned while succeeding—and while failing.

I learned as a young entrepreneur to always surround myself with positive and motivating people who lead by example and help keep me focused on the important things in life. There will always be people who are jealous or don’t want you to succeed or judge you and your family.

Let them. No matter how hurtful their words or actions are, just let them. They don’t understand who you are or what you’re going through because they are not walking in your shoes. So have empathy for them and pray they’ll have eyes to help instead of judge one day.

I learned to keep my head up and keep going and growing. Don’t compare yourself to others. Set daily or weekly goals and meet them with no excuses. Be a light for others.

I am proud to have served as CEO of this family bakery for almost 10 years. It is one of the biggest accomplishments of my life. I’m grateful for every single moment we’ve shared along this journey, good or bad, and I’m thankful we were (and are) able to bake so many people happy!

I’m going to be busy at UNA with my academics, band, Honor’s College, and more. I’ll still bake—I made cupcakes for Tau Beta Sigma last week! But I am in Florence instead of Madison, so your orders will be made by my parents, not by me. 🙂

In closing, I’d like to share some photos of my journey with baking. I’m glad my mom likes taking pictures because I’ll always have them to remind me of the love, peace, and perseverance. Thank you to all of my family, friends, teachers, baking mentors, and customers! Your example stays with me always!

Love and Peace to You,
Joshua Wortham

Today is the LAST day to order back to school cookies for teachers, teams, and kiddos! $5/Apple Giftbox, $10/Apple and Starbucks Card Giftbox, $17/Apple Mini Dozen. Middle and high school teachers love cookies, too! 🙂

We decided to go back to basics with clean, crisp apples this year and they’ve been a huge hit! Sometimes the most basic design winds up being the most popular with our customers! We need to remember this during busy seasons, especially since we are public school teachers ourselves (and we are losing our lead decorator to college!)

Thank you for your patronage! We learn so much from our customers and love you all! We hope everyone has a great first week of school! 🍎 ✏️

Our Story

My name is Joshua Wortham, I am the founder and owner of the Peaceful Pastries and Sweets Bakery, and I just turned 15 years old. I started the bakery when I was 10-years-old to help offset the cost of Peacebuilder’s Camp! I am passionate about human rights and believe all human beings are created equally, so I wanted to learn more about peace-making and peace-building process at this camp. I came up with the name “Peaceful Pastries” since I was trying to go to “Peacebuilder’s Camp,” and I worked hard to create a business plan, slogan, and page for the bakery.

In the beginning I mostly sold to friends and neighbors. Within a few months, the (then) CEO of Wellstone Behavior Center, Mr. Brian Davis, ordered cookies and breads for a board meeting and gave me my first corporate donation! With his check and the money I raised with the bakery, I was able to attend Peacebuilder’s Camp and help pay for another boy from Huntsville, Alabama to attend the following year.

In five years, the bakery has grown so much! I’ve grown, too! I’ve taken classes at Williams-Sonoma, Lynelle’s Cakes, and online and I’ve learned some techniques and tips from three amazing chefs I consider inspirations, Michael Girard in NYC, Stephonie Thomas in Huntsville, and Mary Cesar in Northport. I’ve earned my ServSafe Cottage Food Industry Food Handler’s Certificate, obtained my business license, and set up shop in a spare room in our home. I love learning how to better the bakery. My first event was for the Huntsville MENSA Trek, where I was asked to demonstrate my baking skills and share cookies. Later I was nominated for the North Alabama Entrepreneur of the Year three years in a row, and I won the Youth Entrepreneur of the Year award this year. I was asked to speak at the Huntsville Children’s Business Fair this past spring. Most recently, I was nominated by the Director of Peacebuilder’s Camp, Mrs. Marilyn McGinnis, and selected by Peace Jam International and The Billion Acts Campaign as one of twelve youth worldwide to attend the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Merida (Yukaton) Mexico as a “Hero’s Award” semi-finalist. With this nomination, I have the opportunity to travel to Mexico and meet and learn from multiple Nobel Peace Prize recipients! I’ve been asked to teach cookie and cake decorating classes at the Madison Michael’s Store, and I currently teach classes in Decatur, Madison, and Huntsville, Alabama.

As for my sweet treats, some of my work is original and some is created after searching on Google and Pinterest for sources of inspiration and design. When a customer asks for a specific cookie or cake and sends an inspiration photo, I do my best to follow the design provided. When I have no idea what an order is (video games and certain sports, for example, or a recent order for a Hawaiin “Dobash Cake”) I search on Google or Pinterest for recipes and/or images. My favorite cookiers, SweetAmbs, Sweet Sugar Belle, Sweetopia, and The Flour Box Bakery, even offer tutorials and classes and encourage others to use (and share) their designs! A lot of my cookie designs come from those four cookie masters, and I fully and happily give them credit!
