The Fairoaks Herd of Pedigree Berkshire Pigs The Fairoaks Herd of Pedigree Pigs was formed in the year 2000.
My Name is Chris Impey and I have been keeping Pedigree Pigs for the last 23 years. In November of 1990 after having completed five years of college I graduated from Usk Agricultural college to commence work as a Pig Unit Manager working for the Prison Service at HMP USK and HMYOI PRESCOED CAMP. At the tender age of 21yrs I was running a 120 sow commercial herd and 12 sow Pedigree Berkshire herd.

This sow is Fairoaks Farewell 35th , she has a lovely litter of 13 piglets and doing them all well. This farewell line does generally have big litters but is also early maturing so if your not careful will come into season whilst porkers and a number have had unplanned pregnancies. The line is a particular favourite of mine and we got our first farewell gilt approx 30 yrs ago when we won one in the Berkshire club raffle which the club ran each year. When we won the gilt prize we could pick whichever line we wanted and I chose a farewell because at the time thats the only line we didn't have. Viki Mills was there and said we have a gilt and that was how the farewells came to Wales. I have a lot to thank Viki for.

Here is Fairoaks Ambassador 18th out in the sun, his father was a fantastic boar, I really liked him, its taken me a little while to learn to like this one but he's growing into his skin more now. We must remember pigs and particularly boars change so much as they grow so its worth thinking about this when we are making decisions about their careers and futures as pedigree sires.

This sow is a Fairoaks Mermaid bloodline, with her litter of Orlando sired piglets. There are some very nice boars in there that hopefully will go on to herds of their own as pedigree sires in order to keep the Orlando line going. The BPA conservation survey identified the Orlando line being very low on numbers this year so this sow along with ourselves are doing our bit to protect the bloodlines for future generations, are you doing your bit?
