This was the spark for our very first A Merry Prairie Holiday. Since then, Conner Prairie has had a dedicated crew of volunteers working for over 3 years to convert each light structure to energy efficient LED rope lights. It was only through their hard work and dedication that this project was seen to completion. To convert these lights it took over 2,000 hours. They have run thousands of feet of lighting, made hundreds of new connections, and ensured the sustainability and beauty of these lights for another generation to enjoy. In this video you will discover more about the 20th year of our Youth Spinning Program, its supporters, the spinners and competition day at the fair. 🎡 For 20 years now (2003 - 2023) Conner Prairie Youth Spinners have descended on the Indiana State Fair for Sheep to Shawl. This competition is unlike others, it gives our Youth Spinners only 4 hours to take wool from sheep to shawl!* 🐑 🧣 These completed masterpieces are then auctioned off to the highest bidder with proceeds feeding back into the Youth Spinning program. This competition is only the culmination of months, even years of hard work in the textiles field at Conner Prairie. Sue Payne, Youth Spinning Team Mentor, Interpreter and Historic Textiles Specialist at Conner Prairie, works one on one with these youth, not only teaching them how to spin, but helping them grow in their self-confidence.
