📣 It’s time to meet our Access & Safety Lead for this weekend: the wonderful Jaesic Wade! 💖
Jaesic (they/it) is so excited to be joining us at Motley Hue as our Safety and Access Lead this year! Jaesic has been a huge movement nerd all their life. With Fusion, they have been a part of the community since 2017 in dancing, DJing, teaching, and organizing. For the past year and a half, however, they have been cultivating knowledge and skill for developing safer dance spaces through Consent Academy classes, their time as a peer support specialist, and through their long-term work of being a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice educator, consultant, and coach.
For the last 7 months, Jaesic has been working with Fen Lastra (Kennedy) through their joint project Changeling Spaces, a safety and access resource for policy, protocol, consultation, education, and facilitation. Together they are supporting dance scenes across the country to implement policy that fosters new culture for accessibility, inclusion, and safety. As one half of Changeling Spaces, Jaesic will be consulting with Fen throughout our event to ensure we have an as safe and accessible event as possible!
If you have any questions or safety/accessibility concerns prior to the event, please comment below or email [email protected] with the subject “Motley Hue Safety Inquiry.”
Our Safety & Access team will be available throughout the social dances. We will post more information about this later in the week!
ℹ️ Have you read our code of conduct? We know it can be tempting to tick the box and keep scrolling. But these policies are an important part of keeping our communities as safe and inclusive as possible. Be sure to read the whole thing and know what you’re agreeing to when you sign up for our events. Here are some highlights:
Our code of conduct is based on cultivating the three C’s of curiosity, courage and compassion. We all have a role to play, and all of us belong here! We invite you to take an active role in creating an inclusive dance environment for everyone.
➡️ BOUNDARIES
In attending this event you have agreed that you have some basic abilities to know what kind of dance you want and can speak up to communicate that. This is not a closed event with only fusion dancers, we will be interacting with dancers from many different customs and movement choices.
With great freedom and individuality comes great responsibility. We invite you to be proactive in communicating your own boundaries and in checking in with those of your partner. When in doubt, use verbal communication.
➡️ ADVANCED MOVEMENT CHOICES
We allow advanced movement choices such as kicks, lifts, upper body shaping, or contact improv on the floor, but you are responsible for not doing it where people can get hurt! You are also responsible for determining your own capabilities and limitations, and those of your partner. For example – do not put your partner in a weight bearing situation without their consent.
➡️ SEXUAL CONTACT
No Sexual Contact on the dance floor. Sexy dances are not invitations for s*x. If things get hot, use your words first, then if all parties are in agreement, take it outside.
In general, please also remember to take care of yourself and the space. Keep good personal hygiene. Don’t get too intoxicated. Don’t spill or break stuff.
Please read the whole code of conduct here: https://motleyhue.org/codes/
DO YOU NEED ASSISTANCE?
The Safety and Access Team is here for you during the event. You can reach the team in person or by the reporting form. More information about this will be posted later in the week.
You can find the Safety and Access Reporting Form here: https://form.jotform.com/240434868295062
💞 Thank you for joining us in creating an inclusive dance environment.
📣🎧 Introducing: DJ Salt Queen! 🎧📣
We’ve saved the best for last…our very own homemade DJ Salt Queen! She’ll be getting the party started properly for us on Saturday night.
DJ Salt Queen (Sabrina Ramos) is a Los Angeles native now residing in New York City who has been DJing lindy hop, blues, and fusion for over 10 years. Her love of dance and appreciation for music began in the home, as her Colombian mother often played salsa, soul, and pop music on the record player. Her musical taste has grown and evolved over the last 15 years as she has learned to dance lindy hop, blues, fusion, west coast swing, tango, salsa, merengue, cumbia, bachata, and is always ready to try a new dance style .
She has DJ’d for swing, blues, and fusion dance events and house parties in Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, New York City, Honolulu, Bogota, Colombia, and Barcelona, Spain. From coast to coast (and even across continents!), Sabrina has ignited dance floors with her infectious energy and risk-taking musical choices.

🔥📣🎧 Introducing: Mark Carpenter! 🎧📣 🔥
Another double talent, Mark will also be teaching and DJing for us over the weekend.
Mark is an international Fusion and “Baystyle” instructor, dj, and organizer hailing from California. When he is not traveling he is based out of the SF Bay Area, where he runs the Fusion Dance Academy.
His social dancing career started with Lindy & Blues in 2005, and he has since studied Tango, WCS, and a dozen other dances. He has been teaching since 2006, much of that focused on the Fusion scene with its emerging forms and conventions, teaching workshops all over the world (and in two languages).
He is at the forefront of shaping what Fusion is and what it can become, and one of the original codifiers of “Baystyle”. Mark is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and continually strives to make the impossible look easy, and the easy look impossible.
He’s been DJing at major fusion events for over ten years. As a DJ, he delights in mixing fresh new tracks with the classics. Everything from bassy electronica to jazzy blues to soul-lifting acapella for your listening and dancing pleasure!
🔥 We only have Friday night tickets left! On Friday night we will have LIVE MUSIC from Josh Gronner of Laughing Matters – visiting us all the way from California! A comprehensive pre-dance lesson is included with your pass.

LIVE MUSIC: JOSH GRONNER of LAUGHING MATTERS
Josh Gronner is a dancer, organizer, and amazing fusion musician coming to us all the way from California. He was the musician we wanted to bring out in 2020, but couldn’t! You won’t want to miss his set, as he rarely gets to the East Coast these days.

💃 📣🎧 Introducing: Flouer Evelyn! 🎧📣 💃
Flouer will be one of our amazing teachers AND DJ’s over the weekend! Expect to be inspired and encouraged in the classroom and to be taken on an epic journey on the dance floor.
Flouer (pronounced “Flower”) is a partner dance instructor & Embodiment Coach. She hails from NYC but calls Turin, Italy her hometown. She can mostly be found traveling the world creating dance experiences for fusion and blues scenes of all shapes and sizes.
She has been teaching Fusion since 2011, has an MFA in dance and a background teaching and performing Blues, Contemporary, Latin Ballroom, ballet, and ice skating. She has won plenty of partner dance competitions in various styles, and has performed & taught all over the globe.
All that fancy stuff is great, but what’s important is that in the classroom Flouer has a warm, encouraging personality. She is known for her values of artistry and personal expression, complimented by her ability to break down any movement into incredibly specific detail. Using imagery, anatomy, rhythm, cultural context and embodiment concepts, she will help you become the master of your own dance from the ground up.
Flouer has never before DJ’d at a Motley Hue, always preferring to leave it to the competent hands of others. But this year you’ll get to hear her play on Saturday night of Motley Hue! Having DJ’d all over Europe for the last few years, she is excited to bring you fresh sounds.
While DJing, the dance floor is her tapestry as she spins rich, colorful portraits full of creativity. In her world, she seeks to lull you with the sweet sounds of familiar rhythms- then skyrocket you into starry realms, far past where you ever thought music could take you. Dance is your playground, music is your jungle gym.

📣🎧Introducing: DJ Justin Johnson! 🎧📣
Justin began his dance journey with Contra and gleefully spun in circles for a few years before falling in love with both Blues and Fusion. Since moving to Seattle in 2017, he’s continued to expand his dance horizons with WCS and Kizomba.
As a DJ he brings music outside the norm of what’s often played in fusion (ie – more afro rhythms, funk, etc.), and weaves that in with more familiar sounds to get the party going. He’s also been playing with live-mixing between songs for a little bit of added spice and interaction with the energy on the floor throughout his sets!
🔥 Justin will be starting the night off on Friday night, getting the party moving and grooving. We will have LIVE MUSIC from Josh Gronner of Laughing Matters – visiting us all the way from California! A comprehensive pre-dance lesson is included with your pass.

This is an unsolicited note someone sent the Motley Hue Team after our first event way back in 2015.
Sometimes when I’m sitting and staring at spreadsheets feeling like “Why on earth do I keep doing this?!” 🙇🏻♀️
I look back at notes like these and remember what a difference a weekend can make in someone’s life.
Community and connection, real-life touch and hugs, shared music and extra special vibes with a bunch of people in the same room.
Humans have been gathering to move their bodies together since the beginning. To do it today in our society is a gift, an honor and a pleasure.
Hope to see many of you on the dance floor this year in New York City at our 2024 experience of Motley Hue [Lmtd. Ed.]
Registrations open tomorrow (!) at Noon, EST.
