Give voice to the songs that are already inside of you, in a positive environment, with like-minded creative spirits. Revel in the luxury of a quiet songwriting space, just for you and your ideas. Enjoy daily opportunities to perform and receive valuable feedback on your singing and playing, lyric and music writing, and stage presence.
Your songwriting sherpas will guide you through the landscape that all performer-songwriters need to navigate, including finding your muse, pulling a song together, and performing it effectively. Through hands-on creative activity and lively brainstorming sessions, you’ll gain useful insights into establishing and sustaining your songwriting routine.
In CREATE (with Megan, Elise, Lynn, and Ian), you will befriend your artistic self and learn to nurture your inspiration’s wellspring. You’ll finish the week with at least one brand new song, and the chance to perform it after plenty of coaching and encouragement from seasoned performer-songwriters, who will help you identify and draw upon your strengths. Whether you are working on your first song or you are a pre-professional singer-songwriter, your creative spark will ignite in this supportive environment.
In COLLABORATE (with Elise, Megan, Al, and Shelley), working in duos with another participant (or sign up with a friend!) you’ll perform a 3-song showcase set. Throughout the week you’ll rehearse together on an original song you each bring to share, and you’ll write a new song together as a songwriting team. You’ll learn more about chords, song forms and arranging, and accompanying yourself on your instrument and joining in with others. And you’ll get lots of immediate feedback and tips from our instructors to guide you forward in your songwriting practice.
We supply: music paper, music folder, overnight instrument lock up, piano, t-shirt, inspiration, and creative space.
What to bring: your instrument(s) other than piano, your lunch (or signed permission to leave the premises and purchase lunch nearby), snacks, refillable water bottle, towel or yoga mat, notebook, pencil & eraser, your creative mind!
For teens and adults age 15-115.
Enrollment is limited to 10 participants for CREATE, and 14 participants for COLLABORATE.
Music camp begins at 9 AM and ends each day at 4 PM, except for the Friday which closes with an evening concert at Vimy Brewery where we will present our material. Cell phone use and texting by campers is strongly discouraged during teaching hours.
Ottawa Singer-Songwriter Camp is a scent-free environment.

Free-spirited and full of life, Megan Jerome released her newest album, Ooh Aah, to a sold-out crowd at the National Arts Centre. Elise Letourneau picked up the pen at the age of 6 and never looked back. An accomplished pianist and vocalist, her groove-oriented and genre-blurring songwriting style has been called smart, sensitive, and beautifully crafted. Elise is an associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre. Her award-winning pieces have been sung on 3 continents, and she is becoming internationally known as a choral composer of uncommon lyricism who reveres the inherent rhythm of poetry. Lynn Miles is one of Canada’s most accomplished singer/songwriters. With twelve albums to her credit, the winner of multiple Canadian Folk Music awards (2011 English Songwriter of the Year), and a 2003 Juno award for Roots and Traditional Solo Album of the Year, she has certainly found her strength over time. Through a career that has seen her move from Ottawa to Los Angeles and back again, with stops in Nashville and Austin TX., and a healthy touring schedule that regularly takes her through the US, Europe and across Canada, she has always created and performed music with unbridled feeling and vulnerability. Shelley Posen is a Canadian singer-songwriter and folklorist. Shelley writes in many styles and on myriad subjects (canoes to codfish, seders to Sacred Harp). His songs are widely recognized for their wit, craftsmanship and their profound effect on listeners. They have been recorded and performed by artists across Canada, the United States, and Great Britain, sung around campfires and in living rooms, by solo singers and choirs. He has written songs to order (for superstar children’s performers Sharon, Lois, and Bram, among others) and recorded four solo CDs of mostly his own material. Alain Tambay is a talented musician, singer and songwriter who has been performing and touring for over thirty years. Alain performs and teaches in the style of blues artists such as Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Johnny Winter, George Thorogood, Keb’ Mo’, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Alain was featured at the Kingston Limestone Blues Festival, the Toronto and Ottawa Music Festivals, and the Mont Tremblant Blues Festival. He has toured Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec, opened for Omar and the Howlers, Miles Goodwin (from April Wine), the Lee Aaron Band, and Ray Bonneville. Visit alaintambay.com
Ian Tamblyn has been a working musician since 1972. He has released dozens of albums of his work as well as acting as producer for many other artists. Over the years Ian has written too many songs and has given up on counting them. He has also written fourteen plays and over one hundred theatre soundtracks. In 2012, Ian was made a fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society for his guiding and creative work in the Canadian Arctic. He has been awarded the Estelle Klein and Helen Verger Awards for his contributions to Canadian folk music; he has a honourary doctorate from Lakehead University, a Distinguished Alumni Award from Trent University and was voted English Songwriter of the Year in 2010 by the Canadian Folk Music Awards, amongst other awards and nominations in the music and theatre world.
