I spin, weave, dye, & embroider handmade and unique items using Tasmanian wool & alpaca, linen & silk

I weave and knit -scarves, shawls, cushion covers, table runners; each one is handmade and unique. I use Tasmanian wool & alpaca as well as silk, cotton, bamboo, flax, linen and some acrylic/polyester yarns. Wherever possible, I use my own handspun yarn: these help to make each scarf more authentically local :]

Inspired by another weaving post I saw recently, I tried this very open lacy weave.
Contrary to my usual habit, this has not been wet finished because I thought the weave would just go completely to hell so I ironed it with a fairly high temperature and lots of steam. I warped up 2.3 m long and 55cm wide. Yarn was green: wool and white: wool/silk, both handspun. 7.5 dent on the 32”. Warped, woven and steam-finished all in the same day. Lots learned; on to the next one. I may yet felt this to stabilise it more.

I’m going to be there at the Stash Bash in Ulverstone on Saturday, the 25th of this month. It will be held at the Ulverstone Rowing Club from 10am.
I’ll have A LOT of yarn, and a big tub of various fabric, including some Sheridan sheeting.
I REALLY need to destash, so I’ll be pricing accordingly!

A bit of knitting - this is Ashford’s free pattern, the Boomerang Shawl. Endlessly versatile, this cotton version is hand dyed using natural dyes, primarily cochineal.

Finished this in a day from warping to taking it off the loom. Gotta love the Rigid Heddle loom!
Warp: a commercial Tasmanian fine white wool plus inserts of 2 of my handspun and dyed wool/silk. Also used them in the weft, periodically, along with the main weft which was a bunny/mink yarn I purchased yeeeeears ago and have been saving for a special occasion. (Brushed off the animals, no cruelty involved!)
I deliberately didn’t get precious about the spacing or order of the coloured inserts in the weft, so that it is pleasingly irregular.

I’m stoked with this one. Wool warp, very fine, an anonymous multistrand black weft, 4 fine threads (cotton?) + a reeeeeeallllyyy fine sparkly thread. Threw in pops of my handspun art yarn. 55cm wide, 1.95cm long.

I’ve been having fun with the 4-shaft lately 😀
Very pleased with this one - still need to tend the fringe.

Finished this today. A tricky kinda-basket weave. Very soft yarn 50/50 wool:silk. Not perfect but pretty! (First photo is the front, second is the back!)

Very thrilled to have got this one off the loom, trimmed and washed ready for the Tasmanian Made Christmas Market - Silverdome this coming Saturday
Silk warp, clasped weft of mohair/silk (the black) and alpaca/silk with happy chunks of my handspun art yarn (wool/silk) thrown in for fun. It’s really light and soft. 🥳🥰

I have 2 BIG pre-Christmas markets coming up*, which I’m preparing for. I decided it’s time to unpack ALL my stock and take… well… stock!

At the last market, i sold exactly EIGHT (8!) 😵‍💫 pieces, so I figured I’d pick out a top 24 and make sure they were the closest to hand when i start setting up. Here they are on the line on a very blowy day to freshen up.

Home again, and happy to be so 🥰
There’s a fair bit of hoo-hah going on about right now; let me just say that I flew Qantas all the way from Devonport to Delhi and back, arrived safely (with my luggage), and can only praise for their professionalism, care, kindness and attention to my wellbeing.

After a delayed but sumptuous meal at Bar Palladio in Jaipur last night, we are on the road again to a village nearby to do a carpet weaving workshop. Looking forward to it.

This morning we toured the old streets of Jaipur. Following a visit to a big Hindu temple, we saw Tinsmiths, jewellers, vegetable markets and flower market.

I have discovered why this book was remaindered: the pages are out of order. 😳
So it’s not just the enjoyment of reading, but the enjoyment of finding the next page! 😵‍💫🤪🤣

Getting ready to fly away tomorrow morning … calmed my nerves by making a cute cross-body tote — it has a big exterior pocket for a phone, a purpose-built interior pocket for water bottle plus other pockets… so pleased with it.

Serendipity is when over a period of several days you are working on a bag and a scarf, and when you finish, you discover that they look really nice together! This is another recycled weave on one side of the bag and a hand painted silk that I brought home from India on the other side. Denim and cotton for the handle and inside.
The scarf is a mix of silk and embroidery cottons in the warp, doubled in a 7.5 dent, with a multi-strand silk weft.

2 more bags done using some of my woven fabric and upcycled denim (and other fabrics)

Having fun recycling old weaves; making cushions and bags, mixing it up with denim, embroidery, Japanese cotton…..

2 new creations. market coming up on 9 July in Launceston.

There is a reason I only do this type of embellishment at either end of a scarf; it is extremely time-consuming but also very satisfying.
