Training Permaculture Teachers with Focus on Refugees - Spain, May 2023 “Training Permaculture Teachers” Course with Focus on Refugees @ Catalunya, Spain, May 26 – June 4 (2023)"Where the content and teaching of permaculture coin...

Could barely more stoked (that’s Californian for “thrilled”) to be co-facilitating with StarHawk another Earth Activist Training (full Permaculture Design Course) next summer in an amazing permaculture farm near Berlin! This will be our sixth year and 11th course facilitating together, and this training will be an empowering one. Thanks for sharing and helping to get the word out!

The course has a sliding scale, those who can afford to pay more on the higher end of the scale will help those who can only pay less. The sliding scale recognises the differences in economic reality depending on what country a participant comes from, as well as their individual circumstances, so this is a practical way that people with more resources can act in solidarity.

We also have some pay-what-you-can scholarships for people of color working in environmental and social justice movements. That is part of our way of supporting reparations and of bringing in more diversity to our permaculture movement. If you are a BIPOC or refugee/migrant and interested in one of these scholarships, please contact us through the registration page.

Starhawk and Alfred will participate in two upcoming EAT diversity scholarship fundraisers planned for Earth Day (April 22nd) and around Starhawk’s birthday in June.

Last November we had a very special experience at the “Training Permaculture Teachers with Focus on Refugees” course at an ecovillage in Castalunya, Spain. It was the most rewarding experience I’ve had in permaculture education.

Update – We reached our goal!

Thanks to 79 generous supporters, we raised the necessary funds for 15 refugee scholarships! The campaign will stay online an active, and all future money received over our target will go to Rosemary Morrow’s Permaculture for Refugees organisation in order to:
1. Fund refugees who are likely to become teachers for training and development.
2. Fund development of courses like this TPT4R
3. Fund translations of permaculture materials. For example we want keen students from this course to write a permaculture manual in Dari which can be printed or sent by IT into Afghanistan to address the worsening conditions there

Today I’m thrilled to officially launch a crowdfunding campaign to fund something that is the most inspiring thing I’ve had the opportunity to work on so far in permaculture education… organising and co-facilitating two teacher trainings with a focus on refugees. The campaign will raise money to cover scholarships and travel expenses for 16 refugees who are also permaculture educators, and who will go on to share their practical experience and knowledge with others. There are a couple places open in the upcoming permaculture teacher training in Catalunya, Spain starting in 3 weeks with a maximum of 24 participants. Who is up for it? Here is what Rosemary Morrow says about the course:

“Training Permaculture Teachers” is the only course presently offering a Care of People process and the Care of the Earth PDC syllabus which gives prospective permaculture teachers theory and practice in both. It launches teachers who put their teaching ethics up front and central, and are able to follow through with learning outcomes. The number of active, competent, and faithful to an evidence-based curriculum who graduate from the course is very high. They often surpass their teachers.

As PDC courses and teachers increasing become idiosyncratic and courses drift from principles and ethics, this course produces permaculture teachers responsive to the declining environmental conditions and able to go forward with confidence and teach in a fast changing world. The TPT leap-jumps the time it takes for a permaculture teacher to become confident and professional. The world needs these teachers now.”
