Mr. Jay, a community member in LA’s Koreatown, jumped in and volunteered as a translator with ACCE to make sure ALL his neighbors, regardless of the color of their skin or what language they speak, could access resources to keep them in their homes and off the streets 🏘️🏢
ACCE and other organizations across the LA area threw down all Summer and Fall to connect over 14,000 neighbors to essential services amid the pressing housing crisis.

Meet Desiree Marrufo, a We Are California organizer and leader in South Central LA with Strategic Concepts in Organizing & Policy Education (SCOPE) talking to folks in the community about the importance of coming together.
“When we get people to share their stories with us and can connect them to resources to keep them in their homes, it makes it all worth it!
Before joining We Are California, I didn't realize the struggle people were going through. I knew that sometimes my family struggled to afford rent, utilities, food, and gas but I wasn't aware that so many other people were struggling in the same way. So learning about my community and being able to offer support and resources like food giveaways gives me so much fulfillment.
There was one Saturday where we invited volunteers in South Central LA to have breakfast and canvass with us. I was paired with a young gentleman who was a little nervous about talking to others. We finally got to a door where a woman answered but was a little hesitant and stayed behind the gate. After he shared about how the housing crisis has impacted him, she opened up about her situation and ended up joining the We Are California movement.
Afterwards, he turned around, looked at me, and said, “I did that!” He was super proud about getting through to someone and I was proud of how much I saw his confidence build after just one conversation. We saw that when we talk to people about the We Are CA movement, it resonates and our community comes together.”
Together we win! ✊🏼
We are a movement of people using our votes and voices to create a California where we all have a roof over our heads, schools that provide a quality education, and programs & services that meet our communities’ needs no matter the color of our skin, what’s in our wallets, or who we love.
We're partnering with 16 community organizations from the Bay to San Diego and everywhere in between. Join the movement at https://wearecalifornia.org/funding-our-futures/ to plug in and create a California for all of us!
Our spotlight and shoutout goes to all the MVP volunteers, canvassers, members, staff, and partners that made our summer organizing a huge success!! 47 Grassroots leaders from 14 organizations spoke to 41,264 California voters about the housing issues most impacting them.
Many voters told our organizers that they are working multiple jobs and spending more than 50% of their income just on rent. That’s why almost 80% of the voters we spoke with (31,470 voters) agreed that California needs to do more to stop corporate landlords like Blackstone and their affiliates from evicting tenants and inflating rents.

When Alicia Olivarez was 7 she and her mom lost their Fresno apartment and had to bounce from shelter to shelter. Fresno faced the HIGHEST rent growth of any city nationwide – 28% in 2021 https://lat.ms/3Kzsr54
People losing their homes has a domino effect ➡️ If they’re lucky, they move in w/ friends and families but that's only a temporary solution. Many live in their cars or motels until money runs out and they're forced to live on the streets
Many leaseholders experience this domino effect and rapidly descend into homelessness after events like eviction, domestic violence, health crises, etc. Many had little warning before being forced to leave with a median of 10 days notice.
This is why voting YES on helps millions of Californians
The will:
✅ Close exploitable loopholes used to unfairly evict
✅ Provide enforcement tools that protect people from arbitrary evictions & displacement
✅ Protect families from homelessness
Fresno residents are majority renters, but it's 1 of 2 major CA cities w/o rent control. Residents are more vulnerable to housing costs than much smaller cities in SoCal. The # of homeless folks in Fresno and Madera counties is the HIGHEST in 10 years.
The overwhelming majority of 1,000 Fresno voters across the political spectrum support tenant protections and rent control, but the city's mayor and council have taken few steps to protect renters.
Because of local inaction, Fresno renters rely on state housing + homelessness policies more than other Californians. Voting YES on stops landlords from using loopholes around the few existing tenant protection policies + strengthens enforcement
If homelessness continues to increase in California at its current pace, by 2050 the homeless population will reach over 500,000 people. That’s more than the total number of people in Oakland, Sacramento, Fresno or Long Beach. Vote YES on
Failing to address the housing crisis in SoCal and the Bay Area exported it to the Central Valley. We need strong, statewide protections against predatory rent increases and eviction. Voting YES on is a step in the right direction

Opinion: Another consequence of the L.A. housing crisis: The Fresno housing crisis The Central Valley city has seen among the fastest rent hikes nationwide as coastal California residents flee inland in search of affordable homes.

🚪Giving tenants the right to return to substantially renovated units without a rent increase
