ICC Cricket World Cup 2015
Top bowling performances at World Cup
The Cricket World Cup 2015 witnessed some mesmerising bowling performances. From Mitchell Starc to Trent Boult to Wahab Riaz, there were quite a few awe-inspring spells. Here is Cricbuzz's list of top bowling efforts.

Wahab Riaz (9-0-54-2 vs Australia at Adelaide)

When Pakistan scored 213 in the quarterfinal, it looked like Australia would cruise to the target. Looking at Australia's 216 for 4 in 33.5 overs, one would think that the co-hosts won the match without breaking a sweat but that wasn't the case, thanks to a big-hearted fast bowling performance from Riaz. The 29-year-old left-armer bowled with incredible pace and succeeded in targeting the batsmen's body with short-pitched stuff. After tempting David Warner to cut him to Rahat Ali at third man, Riaz unleashed a spate of bouncers and removed Michael Clarke who fended a snorter into the hands of Sohaib Maqsood at short leg. Riaz kept at it and made the experienced Shane Watson look ordinary. If it weren't for a couple of drop catches off his bowling, the match would have been even closer. Riaz's bowling was definitely one of the cherished memories from the tournament.

Rubel Hossain (9.3-0-53-4 vs England at Adelaide)

Twice the fast bowler took two wickets in an over and came to Bangladesh's rescue in their hour of need. In their chase of 276, England were fairly placed at 121 for 2 at one time and Ian Bell looked good for a big score. But Hossain removed him for 63 and then three balls later got the prized wicket of Eoin Morgan for 0 to put his team back on top. Then towards the end, with England needing 16 runs off two overs, Hossain bowled the penultimate over and showed some real pace and cleaned up Stuart Broad and James Anderson in the space of three balls to seal a historic win for his team. Bangladesh for the first time in their cricket history reached the quarterfinals.

Mitchell Starc (9-0-28-6 vs New Zealand, Auckland)

Defending 151 at Eden Park, Australia needed a Herculean effort even to make a match of it. Thanks to a deadly spell from Starc, not only did they make a match of it but also came within one wicket of what could have been a defying-all-odds victory. The left-armer consistently bowled at 145 kmph and four out of his six wickets were "bowled", a testament to his accuracy and pace. Kane Willamson hit Pat Cummins for six to seal the match in New Zealand's favour but Starc was the man of the moment for throwing a big scare into the Black Caps. The match was the real arrival of Starc and he eventually finished the tournament with 22 wickets in eight matches, for which he was adjudged Man of the Series.

Trent Boult (10-3-27-5 vs Australia at Auckland)

In the same match, the man responsible for the Aussie batsmen's tame surrender was none other than Boult. The left-arm fast bowler, who finished as joint highest wicket-taker with Starc, had the eventual champions under the pump that day. He swung the ball both ways and there was no breathing space for the opposition batsmen. Michael Clarke, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Johnson and Starc were his victims. Starc later gave New Zealand a taste of their own medicine but Boult's bowling meant that the Aussies were always sailing upstream in the match. The 25-year-old was rightly chosen Man of the Match for his match-defining bowling.

Imran Tahir (8.2-0-26-4 vs Sri Lanka at Sydney)

The South Africa legspinner took 5 for 45 against West Indies but the 257-run win against the Caribbean team was set up by the batsmen, AB de Villiers in particular who made a 66-ball 162*. However, it was Tahir who made the difference in South Africa's quarterfinal win over a strong Sri Lanka by nine wickets. After losing Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan early, the Sri Lankan innings appeared to be getting back on track thanks to a fifty-run stand between Lahiru Thirimanne and Kumar Sangakkara who came into the match on the back of four consecutive tons - a world record. Tahir first removed Thirimmane and then five overs later broke the back of the Lankan innings with the wicket of Mahela Jayawardene, one of the best players against spin. He went on to take the wickets of Thisara Perera and Lasith Malinga and the Lankans were skittled for a lowly 133.

© AFP
JP Duminy (9-1-29-3 vs Sri Lanka at Sydney)

Tahir picked up the Man-of-the-match award for his match-defining bowling but in the same match part-time offspinner Duminy made history and played his part in the win. At 114 for 5, the Lankans were desperately hoping for a significant stand but Duminy's wicket of Angelo Mathews off the last delivery of the 33rd over made the situation even gloomier for the subcontinental team. And then in his next over, Duminy achieved a rare feat - a hat-trick. He dispatched Nuwan Kulasekara and Tharindu Kausal off the first two balls of his next over to become the first South African player to register a World Cup hat-trick.

Tim Southee (9-0-33-7 vs England at Wellington)

The New Zealand fast bowler's career-best figures - also a Black Caps record - subjected England to an ignominious defeat. Batting first at Westpac Stadium,England failed to deal with the brilliant swing bowling of Southee and were shot out for 123 in 33.2 overs. In his opening spell of five overs, Southee removed openers Ian Bell and Moeen Ali in quick succession and then returned in the 27th over to completely demolish the English team. In his four overs, he accounted for Ross Taylor, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and Steven Finn. It was a mortifying experience for Eoin Morgan's men.

© AFP
James Faulkner (9-1-36-3 vs New Zealand at Melbourne)

The allrounder chose the biggest match of the tournament to leave his impression - the World Cup final against New Zealand. A fourth-wicket century stand between Grant Elliott and Ross Taylor had Australia in a spot of bother when Faulkner used a back-of-the-hand delivery to remove Taylor caught behind. Two balls later, an in-swinging yorker cleaned up Corey Anderson and New Zealand's all hopes of a competitive total were effectively over there. Six overs later, Faulkner struck again and this time accounted for Elliott who top-scored for the Blacks Caps with 83. These crucial wickets - which fetched Faulkner the Man-of-the-Match award - were the reason why New Zealand were bowled out for 183 in 45 overs, after which the Aussie batsmen cantered to the target.

Kolkata elections push back Knight Riders home games

Kolkata Knight Riders will not play any matches at home between April 12 and April 25 following a request from the Kolkata Police, with the Kolkata Municipal Elections due to take place on April 18. As a result, the dates of three matches and timings of two other games have been changed.

Chennai Super Kings, who were originally to host Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 30, will now play them on April 28 instead. Knight Riders' home games against Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils, meanwhile, has been pushed back - they will face Super Kings on April 30 and Daredevils on May 7.

The change in fixtures also affects the timing of Rajasthan Royals' two games against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, on April 14 and May 7. Their clash against Mumbai at Motera has been postponed to 8 PM, while the match against Sunrisers at the Brabourne Stadium has been advanced to 4 PM.

World Champions AUSTRALIA

Timeline photos 31/03/2015

Mitchell Starc has soared to No.1 in the ICC bowlers' rankings in ODIs following a stellar World Cup campaign, where he was the leading wicket-taker and player of the tournament. Australia, with their fifth World Cup title, also retained the ODI shield having finished as the No.1-ranked side at the time of the April 1 cut-off date.

Starc came in to the World Cup seventh on the list, but his 22 wickets at 10.18 and an economy of 3.50 earned him 147 rating points and pushed him to the top spot for the first time in his career. He struck at least twice in every game he played, including a majestic six-for against New Zealand in Auckland which nearly helped Australia defend 152.

Part of the reason why Australia had failed to win that game was because of the damage done by another left-arm swing bowler Trent Boult. He finished the tournament with 22 wickets as well and vaulted nine places to a career-high sixth position in the rankings.

ICC Player Rankings
Top five batsmen
AB de Villiers, Kumar Sangakkara, Hashim Amla, Virat Kohli, Tillakaratne Dilshan
Top five bowlers
Mitchell Starc, Imran Tahir, Saed Ajmal, Dale Steyn, Sunil Narine
Top five allrounders
Dilshan, Shakib Al Hasan, Angelo Mathews, Mohammad Hafeez, James Faulkner
South Africa legspinner Imran Tahir, India fast bowler Umesh Yadav, and Australia's James Faulkner made big gains as well. Tahir leapfrogged nine places into second position following his 15 wickets from eight matches, while Yadav broke into the top 20 for the first time after ending his campaign with 18 wickets at 17.83. Faulkner, who took 10 wickets - including three in the final to claim the Man-of-the-Match award - climbed 12 positions to 23rd.

AB de Villiers reclaimed the top position among ODI batsmen, and also became only the 11th player in history, and second South African after Hashim Amla, to collect more than 900 rating points. It would be scant consolation though after their tournament ended in heartbreak at the semi-final in Auckland.

There was no change in the top five batsmen, but Steven Smith and Martin Guptill, who were both named in the ICC Team of the Tournament, made the biggest moves, jumping to the 12th and 22nd places respectively. Kumar Sangakkara, who ended his ODI career after a highly productive World Cup - 541 runs including four consecutive hundreds - is second on the list.

The only change in the top 10 positions for ODI allrounders was the entry of South Africa's JP Duminy, who moved up four places to ninth. Tillakaratne Dilshan retained top spot, closely followed by Shakib Al Hasan. Pakistan's Shahid Afridi signed off from ODIs as the sixth-ranked allrounder.

Twenty-five of ESPNcricinfo staff voted for the team of the tournament. Thirty players got at least one vote. There was no set combination: some teams had only one specialist opener, a few went for two spinners, and one of the nominated XIs didn't pick a spinner at all - if the champions can do it without one, why not this XI? Mitchell Starc and AB de Villiers were the only two unanimous picks. Mushfiqur Rahim, Hashim Amla, Shaiman Anwar, William Porterfield, MS Dhoni, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Umesh Yadav drew one vote each from those looking beyond the obvious names.

The dead heat was for the No. 7 spot, between Corey Anderson and James Faulkner who were tied at 12 votes each. The two did seem to cancel each other out because most of votes seemed to reduce it to a face-off between them whereas Glenn Maxwell enjoyed a free run with 21 votes at No. 6. A special allowance was made for Anderson and Faulkner with a XII being named as opposed to an XI. Other close calls were Martin Guptill edging Shikhar Dhawan out as the second opener by 11 votes to nine. Wahab Riaz and Daniel Vettori sneaked past South Africans Morne Morkel and Imran Tahir, making it all-left-arm attack.

Brendon McCullum
24 votes, 328 runs at 36.44, four fifties, strike rate 188.50

The leader of the side. Intent will drip off his frame: mouth chewing gum, smile on face, big forearms without an armguard. He will place attacking fields, chase down every ball, take unbelievable catches, do everything within his powers to keep the opposition down to a low target, and then go chase it before the supper break. If the target does happen to be big he will take a big chunk off it in the first five overs.

Martin Guptill
11 votes, 547 runs at 68.37, two hundreds including a double-hundred, one fifty, strike rate 104.58

Highest run-scorer in the tournament. One to take the singles when McCullum is going, and try to play deep, as he did against West Indies in scoring the highest score in a World Cup match, 237. Watch out for the big sixes once he is in, with his head looking down at the pitch and not where the ball has gone, just like Roger Federer playing one of his backhand winners.

Kumar Sangakkara
21 votes, 541 runs at 108.20, four hundreds, strike rate 105.87, five catches, three stumpings

Four ODI hundreds in a row. Behind only Guptill in runs aggregate. Team's oldest member, and their most stylish batsman. Apart from playing those long innings, will sledge the hell out of the opposition, and hoodwink an umpire or three.

Steven Smith
21 votes, 402 runs at 67, one hundred, four fifties, strike rate 91.57

Slightly more old-fashioned in his strike rate, he will drive teams to distraction with his shuffle across the stumps and shots into the leg side from wherever he wishes. He will play the big innings in big matches. His last five efforts (most recent first): 56 not out, 105, 65, 72, 95. Also you need somebody with super hearing powers to review edges no one has heard.

AB de Villiers
25 votes, 482 runs at 96.40, one hundred, three fifties, strike rate 144.31

Fast hands AB. Ambidextrous AB. One of the only two unanimous picks. Missed out on fastest World Cup hundred, but added to his collection of fastest ODI fifty and hundred with the fastest 150. Will demolish attacks when given a platform, doubling 35-over scores. Will also bowl an odd over full of bouncers here and there.

Glenn Maxwell
21 votes, 324 runs at 64.80, one hundred, two fifties, strike rate 182.02, six wickets at 36.33, economy rate of 5.73

If AB doesn't get you Maxi will, with his fast hands and ambidexterity. Sometimes they both will. How will anybody set fields if that happens? Maxwell fell one ball short of notching the fastest World Cup hundred, but did enough to help his side win the World Cup. There won't be any shortage of confidence with him around.

Corey Anderson
12 votes, 14 wickets at 16.71, economy rate of 6.47, 231 runs at 33, two fifties, strike rate 108.45

or

James Faulkner
12 votes, 10 wickets at 19.70, economy rate of 4.70

Both bowl in Powerplays, both pick wickets, both can score crucial runs down the order. Clutch players both. Anderson a better batsman than bowler, Faulkner the other way around. Anderson has better numbers having played the whole tournament, Faulkner took wickets in big matches, and brings with him promise of nerveless finishes with the bat. Not surprisingly both are tied and make it to the XII.

Daniel Vettori
12 votes, 15 wickets at 20.46, economy rate of 4.04

Has pipped the more aggressive options in Tahir and R Ashwin. Will provide control if the ultra-aggressive pace attack begins to go for runs. One-handed overhead catches at third man come as a bonus. If a last-over yorker has to be squeezed out for four in a tense finish, Dan is your man.

Wahab Riaz
11 votes, 16 wickets at 23, economy rate of 5.56, one fifty with the bat

Edges out Morne Morkel despite most voters' knowledge that his selection will make it an all-left-arm attack. Their logic: haven't seen question marks against all-right-arm attacks. A true left-field pick. Bowled with pace and aggression, including the fastest ball of the tournament and its most rousing spell.

Mitchell Starc
25 votes, 22 wickets at 10.18, economy rate of 3.50

One of the two unanimous picks. Easy job. Ask him to bowl four overs at the top and take a wicket, bowl two in middle overs if there is a partnership, bowl two in the batting Powerplay, and make sure no team scores quick runs in the final few. He will deliver, and he will deliver booming yorkers at 150kmph.

Trent Boult
23 votes, 22 wickets at 16.86, economy rate of 4.36

More orthodox new-ball swing bowler, but will surprise you with that pace from that wiry frame. Ask Sangakkara about his yorkers. Will show endurance in bowling long spells. Will carry with him a copy of Shantaram should there be a nap enthusiast in the side looking for a pillow.

Reserve players
Shikhar Dhawan, 9 votes
Imran Tahir, 8 votes
Morne Morkel, 7 votes

The PCB chairman, Shaharyar Khan, has decided to appoint Azhar Ali as captain of Pakistan's ODI side, ESPNcricinfo understands. Azhar, who was not a member of Pakistan's World Cup squad and has not played an ODI for two years, will succeed Misbah-ul-Haq after his retirement from the format.

The PCB is also set to create a new four-member selection committee, with former batsman Haroon Rasheed as the new chief selector. That would mean the end of Moin Khan's time in the role, after he was called home from the World Cup for visiting a casino. The PCB is expected to announce details on Monday, after the board endorses the changes.

Azhar has only played 14 ODIs and last featured in January 2013, despite an average of 41.09. The 30-year-old is a regular in the Test XI, providing a steadying influence at No. 3. His deputy will be Sarfraz Ahmed, the wicketkeeper batsman, who is also expected to become vice-captain to Shahid Afridi in T20.

This is not the first time Azhar has been considered for the Pakistan captaincy. In 2010 he was seen as potential candidate to take over after the spot-fixing saga, despite having only made his debut that year, but then chairman Ijaz Butt chose Misbah on the basis of experience.

Both Misbah and the coach, Waqar Younis, preferred Azhar for the one-day job because he is seen as a safe, unproblematic choice, as well as a sensible batsman in the mould of his predecessor. He has smooth relationships with fellow players and the board. Azhar has also captained at various levels in Pakistan, with a record of played 34, won 16.

Teams he has led include Lahore Eagles, Lahore Lions, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, Khan Research Laboratories and Baluchistan Warriors. Azhar also captained Wahab Riaz and Nasir Jamshed, members of Pakistan's World Cup squad, at Under-19 level.

Although he has not played over the last two years, Azhar has been in contention for an ODI place but found senior batsmen Misbah and Younis Khan preferred to him in the line-up. With Misbah's retirement and uncertainty over how long Younis will continue, the PCB wanted a reliable middle-order replacement and is evidently confident that Azhar can cope with the pressure of being recalled to the side as captain after a long absence.

Haroon's panel of selectors will be made up of former internationals Kabir Khan, who was previously the coach of Afghanistan, Azhar Khan and Saleem Jaffar.

Haroon has previously served as a member of the selection committee on two different occasions, as well as twice being head of the junior selection committee. He is currently working as game development manager at the National Cricket Academy but will have to relinquish this post.

Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions, have recruited Azhar Mahmood and Johan Botha as replacements for the injured pair of James Neesham and Chris Lynn for this IPL season due to begin on April 8.

Neesham, who failed to make New Zealand's World Cup squad, has not regained match fitness after an unspecified injury. He had played four matches for Delhi Daredevils in 2014, was let go and later bought by Knight Riders for Rs 50 lakh during the auction in February.

Lynn was ruled out for 10 weeks after a hamstring tear in the Sheffield Shield earlier this month. He equalled the record for the fastest fifty in the Big Bash League and finished ninth on the charts with 243 runs at a strike rate of 148.17. His first-class season had begun with a shoulder concern, but they were laid to rest during a double-century against Victoria in Brisbane. With form behind him, Lynn could have filled the vacancy left by Jacques Kallis, who retired from all forms of the game last year.

Venky Mysore, the Knight Riders chief executive, admitted losing Lynn and Neesham was untimely, but was confident that Mahmood and Botha would excel.

Mahmood's vast experience - he has played 213 T20s - and knowledge of Indian conditions worked in his favour. He has played two seasons in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab - 2012 and 2013 - and made 382 runs at a strike-rate of 129.05. In 22 matches, he has also taken 29 wickets at an economy rate of 7.61.

Botha, who played three seasons with Rajasthan Royals and then turned out for Daredevils in 2013, was picked by the coach Trevor Bayliss as cover for allrounder Shakib Al Hasan, who will miss a part of the IPL due to national commitments since Bangladesh are scheduled to play Pakistan in a full tour which starts on April 15.

Botha had an average BBL as a bowler, but as captain he led Adelaide Strikers into the semi-final. "He is the Shakib type of player," Mysore said. "Whenever Shakib is unavailable Botha fits in in with similar skills."

Shakib is likely to play the first two matches at Eden Gardens - the tournament opener against Mumbai Indians on April 8 and three days later against Royal Challengers Bangalore. "He will play as many games as possible before and after the Pakistan tour," Mysore said. "BCB has been most cooperative with us and keeping mind the Pakistan schedule he will be allowed to play to the extent possible."
