About Framing & More

If someone tells you that you do not need to put glass on your picture, poster, etc., once it has been dry-mounted. They are wrong. This is what happens when you dry mount and do not put glass in front of your dry mounted picture, poster, etc. The protective coating will eventually adhere itself to the edge of the frame, due to our humid climate. Once you pull the frame away to change it out, the protective coating comes with it.

Another problem with not putting glass on your dry mounted piece, is if something dents or damages the dry mount, you can not fix it. Once that piece has been dented or damaged it is that way forever. For example, a customer brought in another piece. There was no glass in front of the dry mount. A flood occurred and it warped the dry mounted picture. It is now warped forever because there was no glass on the front to prevent water from reaching the picture.

Always, put glass, or plexi glass in front of your dry mounted piece.

When shopping for glass, I always recommend Conservation Clear / Art Glass to customers, and this is the reason why.
This customer brought in a photo to have re-framed, however the lip on the old frame covered more of the picture compared to the new frame. You can see (circled in red) where the old frame sat on the picture, due to the discolouration (fading) of the photo. This is why it is so important to have a type of glass on your pictures that helps to filter UV light.

Sometimes people come and say that their artwork has been professionally done previously and they only want the glass changed. In this case, the customer only wanted the broken glass changed. However, when I take it apart, I may find cardboard as the backer board. When people use cardboard as backer board, it can cause the colour of your picture to change as cardboard is very acidic. Sometimes customers pay to have pictures professionally done, and while it’s been put together professionally, it may have not been put together with archival materials. Everything I use is all acid free. Never is your pictures, paintings, etc., put together with anything but archival materials. That is what sets my business apart from others.
