What is a good intermittent fasting plan?
So the most popular one out there today is 16/8 method. Essentially, you “feeding window” is 8 hours per day, which means you eat all your food in that period of time. Some people take this to a further extreme, shortening the eating window to 6 or even 4 hours. Some people eat one meal a day (shortened to “OMAD”), while others will eat normally for 5–6 days a week, and fast for a full 24 hours. There are a bunch of different ways to do it.
Fasting for 12-16 hours a day will allow certain survival hormones to activate, and you will begin to use your own body fat as fuel. Think this may be too difficult? Look at it this way: say you finish your dinner around 7 PM. You would then need to wait until 7 AM the following morning to break your fast (that is why it is called breakfast). That is already twelve hours. You can tinker with the times of eating based on your schedule, but it will overall be beneficial to adopt this.
Some evidence out there suggest intermittent fasting helps with production of HGH and helps stabilize insulin levels, which is really important for diabetics and those with insulin resistance.
Understand that intermittent fasting is an eating style, not necessarily a diet. That is to say there are not really any foods that are technically off-limits. This is a pitfall unfortunately. Fasting without taking into account the quality of foods you are eating will not be beneficial long-term. Instead, it could actually be harmful.
In order to build a healthy background to support healthy weight loss that is sustainable, here are some guidelines I give all my patients.
· Eat real foods, with 50% of each plate being vegetables.
· Eat a diet primarily of vegetables, fruit, protein, and good fats.
· Drink clean water.
· Eat fermented foods to balance your gut flora.
· Cut out inflammatory foods.
· 80% of the time eat right, allowing yourself 20% “wiggle room.”
· Drink lemon water in the morning, it helps boost metabolism and liver function.
· Look for foods that are high in fiber (whole foods) and low in sugar.
· Eliminate all packaged foods, if possible. Be sure to read ALL ingredient labels.
· Never eat out of a box or bag.
· Eat greens at least twice per day.
· Choose organic foods as often as possible.
· Choose lean proteins and healthy fats.
· Listen to your body!
