This is the page for Lao-Lao Food Truck .

In 1980, our parents escaped war in Laos and sought refuge in the United States with my oldest sister who was just a few months old and very little to their name. Their plans were uncertain but what was certain were the opportunities that lie ahead and the possibility of creating “home” in an unfamiliar place. Fast forward, two more daughters and 3 grandchildren later, our parents have done everyt

THANK YOU! KHOP CHAI LAI LAI!

We are so grateful to be a part of a community that celebrates and embraces different cultures. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

What a privilege it was to share Solar New Year at the first Durham Food Truck Rodeo of the year! Many thanks to Durham Central Park (Erin, Bryce, Becky and all the volunteers!) for collaborating with us and really incorporating the celebration into the rodeo! Also to our Lao traditional dancer, April for performing and demonstrating the traditional Lao group dance with the crowd - thank you so much for preserving that piece of our culture!

And of couse thank you to every single customer for your patience and support. The main reason why Lao Lao even exist is because of the passion that Mom & Dad have for sharing their food with you 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Shoutout to Jakala Springfield-Cobb & mom for helping us out in a pinch! 🧊

Come join us in our 2nd Annual Solar New Year celebration hosted by Durham Central Park in conjunction with the Durham Food Truck Rodeo on April 14th, 2024 12pm-4pm!

Solar New Year takes place during what is typically the hottest month in Southeast Asia. Mid-April also marks the end of the spring harvest and the beginning of the rainy season. So water is a natural element to feature in the various festivals. Durham has always been an advocate for such diverse, cultural celebrations we knew we had to bring it back again this year.

☀️ Lao Traditional Dancer, April, will be performing a dance as well as teaching the crowd how to participate in a traditional Lao dance circle called, Lam Vong.

☀️ We’ll have family friendly activities to learn about the cultural traditions of celebrating Solar New Year.

☀️ And of course, we’ll have all the traditional Lao dishes to satisfy your cravings! Not the mention the several food truck options that will be there!

We can’t wait to celebrate with you all!

We’ve made it to the motherland safely 🇱🇦🇱🇦🇱🇦! The past 3 days have been so overwhelming!

Our hearts are filled with so much joy. Today, after celebrating our grandparents and elders who have passed, we walked over to hand out school supplies at the primary school in our parents village. The same primary school our parents used to attend as children and some of our are little cousins are students there today. As helpful as it was to provide them with new notebooks, pens and pencils they still are lacking so many resources. It’s been hard to retain teachers resulting in students not being able to attend school on a daily basis and still have limited supplies.

We’ve decided to start a gofundme to support the school in providing new uniforms, shoes, a water fountain and a playground (link will be in the bio).

Thank you so much to everyone who donated supplies and money! We are so grateful to have a community that helped us give back to our village.

LONG POST ALERT 🚨

At the end of 2023 I applied for the Lenovo Evolve Small Grant 2024 Contest on behalf of my parents for Lao Lao Food Truck. We initially weren’t sure if we fit the criteria of the grant or if we would even have a chance with the thousands of small businesses IN THE COUNTRY that may have submitted - regardless we proceeded to submit our application.

A few weeks ago we received an email letting us know we had been selected as a semi-finalist and we were invited to interview with Joey, a representative from Goodie Nation (a co-sponsor for the grant) first, I obviously thought it was spam but then I remembered applying and how it may actually be real - the thought of even being considered for the opportunity was enough excitement for us. Joey who had been interviewing tons of businesses prior to our meeting, intentionally took the time out to listen to our story and how we came to form Lao Lao. After the call ended we were confident we told our story the best of our ability and expressed how much this grant would help evolve our business, so…it was just a waiting game. Joey said that we would be contacted the following week but that quickly passed and I was certain other, equally well deserving businesses had won the contest and we submitted to the idea that we didn’t win this time but would reapply next year…

Thats until we received an email notifying us that we had been selected as a Gold Prize Winner!!!! In my skeptical fashion, I read and re-read the email, then the contract, then the email again - making sure I was reading everything correctly. Of course my first thought was to let the family know via our Lao Lao family group chat and the level of inaudible cheering from our family pushed me to tears! Words cannot explain how beneficial winning this grant will be for our SMOL LIDDLE business.

October of this year will mark 5 years of running the food truck with our parents. 5 years spent alongside our mom & dad slanging plates of papaya salad & Lao Lao Samplers, making silly Tik Toks with Mom, Dad and Jordyn or sweating bullets while taking orders with a line 3 trucks long and even meeting customers from all different places who have a connection with Lao culture. The pure joy on my dad’s face when he would get the truck ready to serve our guests makes it all worth while. Simply put, creating Lao Lao was probably the best decision for our family, it has brought us closer to our parents and even closer to our culture ensuring that we’ll be able to preserve our recipes and traditions for generations to come.

We are so thrilled to be apart of this opportunity to work with businesses and people who really believe in supporting the struggling small business owners out there making up the backbone of our country. Thank you for providing the support and resources for us to be successful! We look forward to working with you all this year!

‼️ANNOUNCEMENT‼️ We’re going to LAOS 🙏🏽🇱🇦!!

When our parents came to the United States in 1980 they left behind everything they knew to create a better life for themselves and their future. We been so blessed to have the life that we have, thanks to their sacrifice. Over the years everyone (except Sun) has gone back to Laos separately or in groups but never altogether. It was always work schedules or life just getting in the way. Now, we finally have the privilege to travel all together to the homeland 🥹🥹🥹🥹. We are so excited so experience this opportunity together and we hope to make memories that will last a lifetime. That being said we will not be operating between the end of February to mid-March but hope to come back grounded and ready to share new dish ideas to bring to the truck!

We are also on a mission to give back to our parent’s hometown in the countryside of Laos, in the Bolikhamsai Province. Nearly 23% of the total population of 7.2 million people in Laos are below the poverty line and Bolikhamsai remains one of the provinces highest poverty rates in the country. we’ve identified a local school in Pakkading (our moms village) who are in need of the following items: composite notebooks, paper, unsharpened pencils, socks, shoes, underwear, leisurely outfit sets *clothing should fit ages 5-13 - but honestly anything will help. If you’re interested in donating we will collect items Saturday, February 10th at the Lunar New Year celebration 11am-4pm if you’re not able to drop off we would be more than happy to pick up items. If you wish to give a monetary donation you can Venmo us at handle laolaofoodtruck.

Thank you so much for your support over the years, even if you’re not able to contribute please make a plan to stop by Lunar New Year at Raleigh Iron Works this weekend to celebrate and support local Asian - owned businesses.
