Black August began in the 1970s to mark the assassination of the imprisoned Black Panther, author, and revolutionary George Jackson during a prison rebellion in California. It is a time of reverence to honor political prisoners, freedom fighters, and martyrs of the Black freedom struggle. This month, we celebrate all the political prisoners who have helped us understand that prison is political and that our collective freedom depends on abolishing the state’s capacity, through incarceration, policing, and surveillance, to disrupt communities and diminish principled struggle against the unjust status quo. The month of August is also rich with the history of Black resistance outside, from the Haitian Revolution to the Watts rebellion and the Ferguson uprising. Black August is a reminder of the power in unity, and a mandate to continue joint struggle.

Jayland Walker was stopped for a traffic violation, fled and unarmed at the time he was shot by the Akron Ohio police 60 times. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation said they found an unloaded gun(his 2nd amendment right)on the back seat. Police released a photo showing an unloaded gun, magazine & gold ring neatly placed on the driver's seat(when would he have had time to do that while fleeing on foot?).

Bobby Crimo killed 7 people and injured more than 20 in Highland Park, Illinois. He was apprehended after a car chase without incident.

There are 2 justice systems in this country. Black folk always have to deal with our skin making us guilty to the point of punishment by death in non lethal cases simply for the color of our skin.

It is insane that white mass shooters are given their day in court and an opportunity to share their racist manifestos while we have to face judge, jury and executioner in the split second for traffic stops.

The Right to Choose is a Human Right.
