If you’re in the swing of something, you’re really into it, you’re in a flow state, and you feel comfortable and confident with what you’re doing.

All week, I have been trying to get started on my marking, but I just can’t seem to get into the swing of things!

If something makes the cut, then it is considered good enough to continue to the next stage.

For example:

- “I made it to the second round of interviews, but unfortunately I didn’t make the cut.”
- “My suitcase was too heavy, so unfortunately I had to leave a lot of things at home, and my hair straightener didn’t make the cut.”
- “It must be devastating for athletes who spend their whole lives training to fail to make the cut for the Olympic Games.”

Can you think of another example?

This expression is similar to “to cut it”, which means “to be good enough”.

Hope you learned something! 😎

I love being a teacher. I’m glad I don’t work in a dog-eat-dog industry like finance or law. I don’t think I’d be able to handle it!

Do you work in a dog-eat-dog industry?
Do you agree that we live in a dog-eat-dog world?
Is the world now more dog-eat-dog than it was in the past?

Every time I truly engage in learning something new, I remember how much I love to learn.

It’s so easy to forget!

When was the last time you were fully and joyfully engaged in the process of learning English (instead of feeling stressed and understand pressure to make progress)?

English dot Community is a joyful place to learn. No stress, no pressure, no self-criticism, just connection and the joy of learning. Sydney classes start on Saturday and online classes are already on!

What are you doing to give yourself a head start on your goals for 2024?

A head start is some sort of advantage that is given, or gained, at the beginning of something like a race or a competition. If you have or get a head start, you might start sooner, or have more resources than others.

When I said above that I am trying to get a head start on my work for the year, I mean that I am trying to give myself an advantage as a result of finishing things early.

For Example:

- Children who are born into wealthy families with plenty of resources and enough money for private education certainly have a head start in life.
- The younger children were given a five-second head start in the race in order to make it fairer.
- If I have children, I will try to raise them to be bilingual so that they have a head start I never had.
- I’m already reading next semester’s course books in order to give myself a head start on my studies.

Hello, Sydney friends.

I run this IELTS Basics course once or twice a year when members of our community are planning to take the test.

We cover all the basics of speaking and writing task two (the essay) over six weeks, with heaps of feedback and (optional) homework.

If you’re taking the test this year, put your best foot forward and join us.

The link is in our bio, or you can send me a DM.

We start on 13 January!

See you in the classroom.

Well, everyone, that’s a wrap!

Joanna and I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and thank you so warmly for your efforts and contributions to our community this year.

2023 hasn’t been a huge year for progress or change but we have been steadily showing up every single day to connect with our members and try to create a vibrant and safe space for you to progress in your English learning.

2023 HAS been a wonderful time of connection and post-pandemic emotional recovery.

You are all more than worth the effort and I am so grateful that you have chosen to learn with me.

Enjoy your break and we’ll be back with new energy and new plans in the new year.

Love to you all.

As an English teacher, I use this expression A LOT! This is because for every rule in English, there are loads of exceptions.

A rule of thumb is a GENERAL rule that USUALLY applies.

For example, a role of thumb is that “i” goes before “e” when you are spelling, except when it comes after “c”. But, of course, there are many exceptions.

Or how about the role of thumb for making a pot of tea: use one scoop of tea for each person, then one extra (“one for the pot”).

The rule of thumb when you’re taking an international flight is to arrive at the airport 2.5-3 hours before your departure time.

Can you think of any other examples of rules of thumb?

29/11/2023

Well, I can safely say now that I haven't achieved any of my 2023 goals, but hey - there's no use crying over spilled milk! 😂🥛

04/11/2023

You really hit the nail on the head when you said that prepositions were the hardest thing to remember in English. 😵‍💫😫🤯
