Modlocks
The cultivation of relationships through modern dreadlocks. Services, classes, public speaking.
Everything is fixable. Lose hair, broken hair, thin hair. But the reality isโฆfor how long does it stay fixed? Letโs discuss. Twisting or palming requires monthly appointments if you want to keep tidy. Interlocking needs consistency to prevent loops in the hair. Crochet is a completely different service. My clients come 1-3 times a YEAR, allowing their hair to grow organically and saves them TIME. One technique is NOT better than another. There are multiple ways to peel an orange. The clients have more information than ever before so it is imperative that we, the pros know how to debunk misinformation AND stay curious about new trends and techniques.

It comes with a heavy heart that my dear friend Ron Boudreau passed away. He and I met nearly 20 years ago when I opened my previous salon, Knot Just Dreads at the infamous โ165 Melroseโ building in Toronto.
Some of you knew Ron and how much he meant to me. He had a pure heart. He cared about his friends unconditionally. Although we had grown apart, Ron and I always stayed in touch.
To the outside world he was an extrordinary photographer. In 2009 he and I created a passion project called Book of the Dread showcasing and celebrating the beauty of my clients across Canada. I cherish one of the only copies that was ever printed.
Last year at my 25th anniversary my plan was to surprise Ron with a huge 16 foot display of all the photos in our book as my way of sharing the impact he had on my life. Sadly he couldnโt attend and I never told him what I had done because I didnโt want to make him feel bad for missing it.
Ron, I am broken you left us so soon and so suddenly. Rest in peace.

Leon is a beloved client of mine. Before that, his wife Candice Moar-Amour was also a beloved client for well over a decade. I did his hair for their wedding. Weโve talked endlessly about health and well-being during so many of our appointments. Iโm honoured to know Leon.
And if there was ever a time you wanted to make a difference in someone elseโs life who will undoubtedly pay that generosity forward, Leon is that person. Please help.

What I love about being a loctician isn't just about doing the technical work. For me it's about connecting with people and nurturing relationships.
At Modlocks, we treat you like family. And I feel that same love from all my clients.

Iโve been a loctician for over 25 years. Thatโs 25 years of trial and error. So I have a plethora of information I want to share so that the next generation of locticians can take the good and the bad from my career as a starting point for theirs. A little like passing the baton in a relay.
I love watching students show up with the same amount of passion and enthusiasm and a readiness that I had - and still have! Because I get to pass on my own experiences and knowledge to others can receive it with new perspective. A new way of doing what I do. Everyone learns differently. In different ways, for different reasons at different times. I love to teach because my students teach me something new every single time.
Come be a Modlocks student and do what I do in the way that works best for you.

Take a look at this! ๐ฑ No matter how healthy locs are, they are more prone to fall apart with improper maintenance, excessive manipulation, product buildup, and even the natural progression of hair growth which can weaken and compromise the integrity of locs.
With the right technique and skills, locs can be repaired and restored to the right fullness, shape, and definition. Looking for a local loctician? I am now accepting new clients (link in profile to book).

Have you heard of partial locs? ๐ค People want partial locs for different reasons: some want to create volume on flat hair, others love the fun and versatile style, and then there are those who simply want a better understanding of the commitment and expectations of locs.
Partial locs are also sometimes called peek-a-boo locs. No matter what you call them, partial locs offer more fun and flexible styling options.
is EVERYTHING with partial locs, so the most important thing to remember is that locs love to buddy up with each other, so keep the parts defined and separated and prevent matting.
Would you do partial locs? ๐ I'm hosting a "Look and Learn" on May 29th. For only $100, you can see how I work my magic. This is a great introduction if you're interested in learning on how to care for locs, or if you want to get some insight into becoming a loctician.

Never have I felt more love between old and new friends, clients and colleagues all in one place at one time. I really felt magic in the air.
I was touched by many of you who took to the stage to share your personal story with the room (I was also secretlyโor maybe not so secretlyโcheering for all of you who would never otherwise have spoken on the mic).
There are so many people to thank for making this possible and I cannot express how grateful I am for all the hard work and dedication that went into making Modlocks 25 a success.
Special shoutout to my dear friend Ralph Bryant and the wonderful team at who helped orchestrate the entire event.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being a part of my life and a part of my vision.
At the end of the day, I was left with a renewed sense of motivation to continue down this path of bringing people together to celebrate relationships and the unifying effect of Modlocks.
And thank you for all the love you shared with my family.
I donโt even have the words to describe my feelings from yesterday. More to come.

I remember the first time I did Kokiโs hair. His dreadlock journey started in Japan, with a perm, which is a common way to texturize straight hair and accelerate the dreadlock process. At the time he held the record for the client with most dreadlocks: 187!
If youโre considering dreadlocks and want them to be this small, there are some things you need to consider. Number one is time investment. The more locs there are, the more time it takes to start and maintain them. Number two is money investment. The longer the service the more it will cost. And number three, if you donโt have time or money to invest, those tiny locs will be prone to breakage, which I like to call natures haircut!
Koki used to get his hair maintained by me twice a year. He was on a good routine until a few years ago he moved back to Japan. I miss our fun and quirky appointments! Every once in a while, he reaches out when heโs back in town, but our schedules just havenโt been able to link up.
One day our paths will cross again, but until then, hello from the other side of the world! ๐๐

Many leaders are called into service, often reluctantly, because they see something - a need, a product, a service - that only they can see.
Perhaps they keep that vision to themselves, for worry that they will be mocked or ridiculed.
In that case, the world is denied whatever destiny that has been placed on that persons heart.
Then there are the few - those that step into the arena (as Brene Brown eloquently says), with a song in their heart and passion and purpose as their guide.
They will be laughed at. They will be ignored.
They will be told that the idea doesn't work
That no one will get it
In those quiet times, they will be alone, scared, and empty
They will be broke
They will disappoint themselves and others.
But for these special people, the ones that step into the square, with faith and courage and discipline l will be one other thing.
We will be successful.
