So THIS happened…..
I walk into a relatively empty Dunkin on this holiday and saw a gentleman sitting all by himself staring out the window…

Me:( As I walk toward him to shake his hand) Thank you for your service Sir and Happy 4th!!!

Sam(Army Vet): “Thank you ( with tears in his eyes and his upper lip quivering) I just lost my buddy of 80 years. ( childhood friend and veteran as well)

Me: I’m so sorry.. God Bless you both. ( after a 5 minute conversation I ask ) May I take a photo with you Sir?

Sam: “ Of course. I would be honored”

Me: I’ll be right back my phone is in the car.
( MY eyes welling up now while retrieving it ) 🥹

I thought on this “National Teachers Appreciation Day”
I would bring back one of my favorite photos of my favorite teacher…

I do so to tell you….SHE WAS READY!

I know…because she told us…

Born in South Carolina with her formative years seeing her raised in Philly…she blazed a path for so many to follow….SHE WAS READY!

Raised in a God loving Christian Family.. she used each and every blessing to treat others as she would want others to treat her… loving all.. and showing everyone that the only race… was the HUMAN RACE…and she worked tirelessly to spread the word…SHE WAS READY!

From Morgan State College,, to teaching at Delaware State College ( now both Universities ) to becoming the first African American “High School Science Teacher of the Year” in Pennsylvania (West Philly High) ….
SHE WAS READY!

To helping to raise two children in her image and being satisfied to no end with the results( so she told us☺️)
SHE WAS READY!

To spending 98 years and 10 months on this earth.. she was tired….but… SHE WAS ALSO READY!

So when she saw an extended arm and hand hovering over her care facility bed and coming her way early this morning…I’m sure she heard…..

“Ruth Helen JOB. WELL.DONE. It is time”🙏🏾

Her response?

“ Yes Lord…I AM READY”

Thank you MOM…..I LOVE YOU!
