We've been running about all morning and we are so excited to be part of the teacher appreciation event at Amicus Brewing Ventures today.

We brought back our flapjack bites for today. They are gluten free, vegan, and portable. Great for school lunches or a snack.

We usually tend to take time off over the summer as extreme heat and baked goods don't go well together, but we couldn't say no to the Havana Market today. There should be over 20 vendors and live music and we are terribly excited to attend. (We also understand that there is a sidewalk sale for the stores around the downtown.)

The baker was a little overzealous this morning and we have 4 kinds of scones for this evening. (She insists that she could not decide between tropical (pineapple/coconut) and key lime pie, so she had to make both.) Accuweather insists that it shouldn't rain tonight and we are so excited to attend a Hub First Friday at The Hub at Feather Oaks.

This is YOUR day, Star Wars fans! We've got themed beers, food, trivia, decorations, facepainting, movies and more. Vendors that day are (with an All Star Wars menu), Rich Rob’s Philly Stop Siri-ously Thai and . Hartworks: Face and Body Art will be face painting and will be on stage (4:30-7:30 pm)! Gonna be a great, galactic day! 🌟 🤩 ⭐️ 🌠

This year has been a bit crazy for our 221B family, but we are terribly excited to be back at one of our favourite venues, The Hub at Feather Oaks. We'll be there this Saturday the 13th from 11 until 9 or until we sell out. The weather looks like it will be beautiful. (Accuweather actually used the word, "delightful" in their forecast) The baker is very enthusiastic and we keep having to tell her not to go too crazy.

We've been following this story for a couple of months and we are outraged that this has been allowed to happen.

"Since 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has permitted the importing of oats, wheat, barley, and some animal products treated with chlormequat. The EPA even increased the allowable limit of chlormequat in oats in 2020."

It's dangerous enough to ban in this country, but we are going to allow it in imports?

It's not as if they didn't know it was dangerous and that it was in imported oats.

"Researchers detected the chemical in 77 of the 96 urine samples collected between 2017 and 2023. The presence of chlomequat was consistent throughout the years, but its concentration spiked in 2023."

But, I digress. The point of this post was not to rant about food safety or the lack thereof, despite our outrage. We use oats in our flapjacks and we've been purchasing Quaker Oats as we thought we could trust the name brand. Apparently not.

The study goes on to say, "Look for the USDA Certified Organic seal on your food if you want to avoid chlormequat. Organic oats are grown without most synthetic pesticides or fertilizers."

For the immediate future, we will not be making or selling flapjacks as we find new sources for safe, American-grown, organic oats. We eat what we sell and we will not knowingly purchase something that can endanger our customers' health.
