❤️I stand by these words ❤️
This project came at a tender moment. It was the first time in my six years in Berlin to work with a group of people, ALL with Asian heritage.
We were a hodgepodge mix, many strangers to each other, but as we sat slurping noodles together during the break in between...talking about our lives and experiences in this city...there was a clear commonality- the continual confrontation with our identities (a grueling internal and external process). But when I see these images and hear these stories, I begin to see beyond to a place free of such preoccupations
Honored to be included in Daddy magazine’s second edition “Dreams” - a collection of writings, stories and images from local creatives/dreamers/organizers/activists. Support the effort and get your copy through the link in their bio! .berlin

Why is it that nearing the end of my MFA degree and after 6 years of studying at institutions of higher education across three continents, I still feel like I was a better artist before it all? Discovered these painting ideas from the beginning of my time in New York: 18-years-old, fresh-eyed, open hearted, hungry for experiences and full of raw untamed creativity.
What I would give to draw this way again...
Today on the 4th of July, America’s Independence Day, it seems an appropriate moment to reflect on the idea of “freedom” in relation to the use of flag imagery by artists of different generations. The history of flag paintings/representations of the U.S. flag mirrors the tumultuous journey of this young country. From Jasper Johns’ mid-50s abstractions/material investigations to David Hammons’ piercing commentary on racial injustice in the late 60s/70s to Penny Monogiou’s present day lego filled plexiglass constructions (reflecting on consumerist/capitalist impulses), we find an underlining commonality within all the works: the desire to celebrate certain freedoms and simultaneously to remark on the suppression of certain freedoms.
Through these varying artists’ works, among many others that emerged in the pandemic year 2020, we can begin to piece together an understanding of “freedom” through these visual responses.
