🚨 1st Deer Alert 🚨

Hows that for a Pre Thanksgiving Day Hunt

United States Army Combat Medic Tim Newcombe drops a East Texas stud at our Iron Oaks Combat Recovery Ranch owned by NFL retired quarterback Luke McCown

Tim had always wanted to learn how to deer hunt but didn’t know where to start. We’re damn proud that he reached out to our team to teach him all that we know. It’s our hope that he now has the confidence and the know how to take on this adventure beyond our hunt. Let’s just say with this Buck we certainly set the bar high. But this lifestyle this passion this dream will create so many memories and we pray ultimately a road to Combat Recovery

Tim was able to get his buck over to Carnes Packaging for processing and next door to Modern Memento Taxidermy where they will forever capture his trophy

🚨 First Deer Alert 🚨

This hunt went exactly how it was intended to go. From euphoria to regret n disbelief than having to go to bed knowing we had just hit our target Buck high shoulder knowing it wasn’t a fatal hit. Than as the sun rose the next morning that same Buck comes limping into the food plot that same spot from last night no way in heck was it possible. But our HSB guide Adam felt it in his soul he would be back. We had done all the scouting knowing his bedding area was near even though he was wounded we just knew that’s where he’d be. That morning that food plot that’s where he was intended to be to make sure this Hero took home his forever Trophy…..

🚨 FIRST DEER ALERT 🚨

United States Army Combat Veteran Josh Garcia knocks down what is now named

‘ REDEMPTION ‘

On our very first evening sit at our Iron Oaks Combat Recovery Ranch in walks a shooter this Whitetail Buck we’ve been hunting since the start of Bow Season. He creeps ever so slowly into the food plot getting the stank eye from one of our Big Boy Breeders guarding a doe. He goes broadside weapon on fire we’re confident in our aim point and 💥 right into high shoulder as he slightly turns as the trigger is pulled. He does this weird walk off to the tree line scraps the ground what ended up being like a Shake It Off something bite me stretch it out ok it’s good and limps away. We find no blood no sign of being hit yet on video we see it’s high not fatal lives to fight another day and man both our hearts sunk thinking we blew our chance. All night our HSB guide Adam keeps telling him he’s coming back in the morning he will be there that’s where he beds he’ll be back. Barely able to sleep we’re in the blind by 530 an hour before sunrise. We sit in darkness we wait we’re anxious pretty sure both guide and hunter are re living that shot that deer. We really want this Buck the Buck we’ve already hit once the Buck we’ve hunted since Bow season the one the Hero wants as his first Buck. Sun comes up deer are coming into the food plot here comes one of the Big Boys again. As we watch Big Boy chase another doe out the corner of Adam’s eye he sees him last nights deer limping in from an old logging road. Dude stands dead still for 15 mins looking straight into our blind knowing something last night bite him and it hurt coming from that window. What felt like eternity he finally makes his way in goes broadside and

The Devil Dogs got it done

U.S. Marines Combat Veterans Jason Gonzalez & Javi Mendez both were able to knock them down a whitetail doe to fill their family freezer for their 1st ever deer. Once they dropped their does we shifted focus to our target bucks hoping both men would get an opportunity to harvest their 1st Buck but things just didn’t pan out that way. But by no means does that mean the hunt wasn’t successful. Both men were brand new to deer hunting so we focused on teaching them all we knew about the ins and outs of deer hunting. With the hopes sharing our knowledge and passion for the outdoors would lead both of them down a path of successful hunting adventures in the future.

🚨 First Deer 🚨

We’re already on the board this morning at our Iron Oaks Combat Recovery Ranch. Our 2 Heroes both U.S. Marines Combat Veterans didn’t waste any time and dropped a whitetail doe each. Now that the dirty work is done we can now shift focus to targeting bucks which was the requirement we set for this hunt.

U.S. Army Combat Veteran Patrick Stewart dropped the hammer on this Battle Tested Buck

‘ Turn Down For What ‘

For one his name is for obvious reasons ( left main beam turns down ) and second this brute is as tough as they come. 2 weeks ago another Hero released an arrow high into his back just underneath his spine we bow hunters dread called The Dead Zone. Nothing vital and praying it hits that miracle artery just under the spine but seldom does it happen. We tracked blood for 100 yards and vanished brought in tracking dogs which gave us a lot of clues he just might survive the ordeal. Days of walking creeks and ravines to no avail no sign of vultures or smell and no game camera pics for 2 weeks. But as luck would have it he turned back up at one of our food plots fighting over some Doe Tail 🤭 and let’s just say we were thrilled to have another chance on him with a Hero. Once Turn Down For What was down and this Hero was able to put his hands on his 1st Deer 😳 we noticed his bottom jar was broke literally in half with scars from fighting all over

Dude fought all the way to his end but wow what a helluva 1st Deer 1st Buck. Heroes getting spoiled over here at the Iron Oaks Combat Recovery Ranch owned by retired NFL Quarterback

DOES EAT JUST FINE…..

U.S. Army Combat Veteran Russell Bond knocked him down an ole slick head to fill the family freezer. Sat all afternoon with not much activity in the food plot. Just about to call it an evening made a last minute audible before sunset had us driving towards the power line cut through hoping to jump something worthy of a shot. Guess that turned out to be the right decision as Russell took aim and dropped her.

FOLLOW OUR PAGE FOR MORE OPPORTUNITIES

Our 10th and final season is coming to a close but we’ve got a few more Whitetail Deer on our management list at our Iron Oaks Combat Recovery Ranch in Jacksonville, Tx

We’re looking for 2 Combat Veterans for Nov 17th
This will be a morning and afternoon sit with a strict management list of animals we’re looking for. But there is a catch

You cannot have EVER shot a Buck before of any type and you have to drop a Whitetail Doe before we shift focus to a Buck. Obviously bucks are never a guarantee as there are specific ones we are targeting to cull out of the herd before the main rut kicks in

Must have a Texas Hunting License
We will gut your animal and suggest you use Carnes Packaging in Troup, Tx for processing of your harvest and by chance you do get a chance to bag a Buck we highly recommend Modern Memento Taxidermy who’s right next door

**COST OF PROCESSING & TAXIDERMY IS YOURS**

Well how’s that for a last second I’m bored let’s go hunting trip?

Ole weather man called for rain but by 10am we figured out he has no idea what he was talking about and decided chores are done weather is perfect deer will be moving let’s find us a Hero

So off we went jumping straight into a tree stand with the knowledge we may just bust us a Whitetail Doe for meat. Let’s just say it’s a breath of fresh air when there’s appreciation shown just for the opportunity to fill a freezer with meat and for the experience. As luck would have it thou this big brute decided to walk into the food plot and he happened to be one of our target management bucks we were trying to cull out of the herd before the main rut kicked in

So I whispered words he didn’t quite expect to hear

‘ That’s A Shooter ‘ and his eyes went 😳

I could feel his nerves and excitement shake our tree stand as he began to take aim. The deer sensed something wasnt quite right and took notice to our location just as he steadied himself squeezed the trigger and 💥 Big Buck Down didn’t go 20 yards…..

Good shootin Nick Rousseau it certainly came together fast but an experience all the same

***** UPDATE *****

Both afternoons have been filled watch the page these last minute opportunities will most likely fill fast…..

Who’s bored and wants to drop some meat to fill their family freezer?

Ole weather man decided to push out the rain and we’re wasting valuable time in the tree stand before the Rut goes into full swing. Any Combat Veterans somewhat local to Jacksonville, Tx wanna get in the deer stand this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon? Need to be in the stand by 3pm so

Tick Tock Tick Tock ⏰

If you’re an avid Hunter

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT APPLY these are for those who’ve not had such chances

For the rest of this season a lot of our Hunts will be last minute postings so better watch the page they’ll fill fast. If you’re someone that would turn your nose up to a Doe Hunt versus only wanting a Buck than move along please. We have strictly managed this ranch for the last 7 years so we play it by ear depending on what God puts in front of us

You have no idea what this Veterans Day weekend means to us

For as long as I can remember HSB has guided and given back to other such Heroes on Veterans Day helping them realize their hunting dreams. Well this weekend was months of secretly planning to surprise them with their own Once in a Lifetime Hunts for all they have given others. I love these men everything we’ve done in the last 10 years in providing Combat Recovery to our Nations War Fighters is because of their selfless service to others. They have done all this with never asking anything ever in return EVER…..

***** Let’s just say tears were shed and dreams realized this hunt will forever be in our lives *****

As a thank you for the last 10 years each HSB guide was gifted a custom built Tactical Henry .30-30

I also want to express a huge thank you to our good friends Tony Powers, The Fox Family and RNR Tires Express Tyler, Tx. Because of their support I was able to surprise Martin, Kody and Michael with their Dream Hunts.

But don’t worry we still have a few more hunts left before we close our doors forever but this weekend was finally ours to celebrate and enjoy ourselves 🇺🇸

***** KIDS OF HEROES HUNT *****

It’s our honor to introduce HSB Nation to Gold Star Kid 13 year old Mathew Michael Zinn who’s Father John Michael Zinn bravely served in the United States Navy as a Navy Seal. A little while back our team was reached out to by U.S Navy Iraqi Combat Veteran Justin Morris about young Mathew and wanting to get him on his first ever hunt after meeting at a kids retreat with his own son Dereck. Of course there was no way we were gonna turn down the chance to honor his Father’s sacrifice and bless this young man. Knowing Justin and his family were going to cover his flight from North Carolina we quickly arranged dates for a hunt at our leased East Texas ranch owned by retired NFL Quarterback Luke McCown. We counted down the days as our team was certainly excited for the opportunity to take him under our wing and teach him everything we knew about hunting. When I say this hunt went exactly how we prefer it to go will probably confuse some of you.

Our first sit Saturday morning lo and behold one of our target bucks walked right out in front of Mathew’s blind not even long after sunrise. Good ole Buck fever took full on control of his aim arms shaking breathing heavy. The shot was there and💥miss right in front of his chest hitting the ground behind him obviously scaring the buck gone. Again we say this is exactly how we prefer the hunt to go not because we want you to miss but it shouldn’t ever be this easy we want you to go through the ups and downs of hunting. Those highs and lows than reaching that magic moment after working harder and stressing about if you’re gonna be successful or not. Than finally reaching that moment of putting your hands on your harvest when you were just about to give up are those forever impactful moments that are never forgotten. Saturday evening rolls around we decide let’s try another blind switching to crossbow. We sit for hours upon hours sun beaming in and we’re surrounded by does not a single buck in sight. That’s when teaching began on how deer react and why they do certain things they do. Talk of aim points of using a crossbow based on distances and which way the body is facing. Well sunset was just about setting on our Saturday evening sit and a late audible let’s get this young man on the board to boost his confidence from this mornings miss. Mathew took aim at 27 yards slight down hill we decided the best course was to use our 20 pin aiming 1 inch high of the heart and she maybe runs 20 yards expiring at the tree line. From stressed out to beaming with a confident smile that feeling of I did this I’m a Hunter. Well the hunt wasn’t over our goal was to get Mathew his first buck. We enjoyed Pizza as a group sat around a fire sharing stories and came up with a game plan for our last opportunity Sunday morning hunt. But it wasn’t in the cards we selected another blind where there was a lot of activity during the evening hours the night before and we got ghosted. Let’s just say a feeling of let down came across the team and Mathew. But no worries this kid was not leaving this ranch to fly back home to North Carolina nor our team to ours until we give it one last Hell Mary. We decide let’s go back to the same blind of the first morning miss on that buck and just see what happens. So we sit for hours it’s now roasting in the blind we go from freezing Texas temps to we’re all a sweaty mess. We have does all afternoon acting crazy stomping blowing being sketchy as can be. Great now hogs come to the tree line run off all our deer up the hill. With some quick thinking we decide let’s sling an arrow at the hog to chase it off as quietly as possible and hopefully have just enough daylight left for the does to come back in. Well it works hogs gone deer take around 20 mins to come back down which was exactly what we needed with the rut in full force. Out the corner of Mathew’s right eye he whispers BUCK. In our minds it’s

HALLELUJAH it’s the same Buck from the first morning

‘ Chocolate 8 ‘

We switch back over to the rifle. It takes about 10 mins of were running out of daylight for the buck to turn just right to give us a proper shot and wham Mathew laid him down in his tracks hello First Buck bring on the overjoyed smiles we did it…..

That feeling that moment the whole weekend while his Father looks from above will forever be told in Mathew’s life and we hope one day he shares that with his own child in the far off future.

Meet U.S. Navy Operation Iraqi Freedom Combat Veteran Justin Morris who was assigned to the surgical shock trauma platoon providing immediate life saving care to our fellow War Fighters.

Due to Justin’s unwavering heart to supporting his fellow Heroes. Justin helped coordinate this past weekends Kids of Heroes Hunt where we were able to give back to a Gold Star Kid who’s father was a Navy Seal. Young Mathew was flown from North Carolina to our Combat Recovery Ranch in East Texas owned by retired NFL Quarterback Luke McCown where he was also joined by Justin’s son Derrick Morris. As you can see Dereck was able to harvest him a great East Texas buck who we called

‘ Too Tall ‘

For the 2nd part of our Kids of Heroes Hunt. One look at Too Tall coming down the hill surrounded by tall pine trees our HSB guides quickly knew our target buck was walking into range and it was go time. Derrick the sharp shooter that he is delivered a perfect shot and was able to tag his Brow Tine Stud

Meet U.S. Army Combat Veteran Randy Davis

Randy came to us years ago when we first started our Combat Recovery hunting program after mainly just focusing on fishing. That year Randy was able to sling an arrow at a buck we deemed Crab due to his unique antler arrangment. Well for some reason or another it just wasn’t in the cards for ole Crab and Randy. Crab took a Broadhead high shoulder and decided his memory was for another such Hero down the line which he ultimately became. But most importantly after all said and done that first trip we had learned about his brother also a Combat Veteran Brian Davis. He shared with us how he really felt like Brian would greatly benefit from what we offer especially during his darkest moments. Well not much time had passed we invited them both out and ole Brian smacked him a good one that year with us at the ranch HSB leases owned by retired NFL Quarterback Luke McCown.

Well fast forward to now we were finally able to reconnect with Randy getting a last minute opportunity what we deemed as a

‘ MEAT HUNT ‘

Wasn’t any guarantee we were targeting bucks just a we’ll see what we see and go from there type of opportunity as we have always followed a very strict management on this ranch for all these years. Plus we certainly appreciate our Heroes just being appreciative for an opportunity no matter the quality of the animal. Thou let’s just say Randy got him a

The reality of

‘ Bow Seasoon ‘

Sometimes it’s successful and sometimes it can test every reason you even hunt. That’s the beauty and true sportsmanship of bow hunting everything has to be within inches of perfect and fall into place at the right time

After 8 total hunts starting back to last years season to now. Our Hero finally was able to sling an arrow towards one of our target bucks and what we thought would’ve been a fatal shot that we would recover within the first few hundred yards. After tracking for 4 hours than losing the trail calling in tracking dogs to have them track for a few hours to than have them find bedding area with signs of blood with no deer in it. Losing the trail again from there we all felt like this deer was wounded but able to outrun 3 ridge back tracking dogs we figure he would survive to be hunted another day. Add in 4 straight days walking creek bottoms, ridges and the good ole random walk around we found no sign of this deer not even vultures. Fast forward 2 weeks to yesterday we happen to stumble upon this deer we hunted weeks ago a mere 50 yards from the last known sign of blood while on a track of a new deer was disheartening to say the least. I guess there’s always gonna be second guessing but I felt like we did our best in trying to honor the harvest as we could.

In the end our Hero was at least able to recover the head of his trophy but we absolutely hate he laid to waste and or suffered. This is not the way we envisioned our Hero getting his first Buck. But it’s our hope that the memories built and the work we actually put in teaching him about hunting is what makes that lasting impact Combat Recovery is all about…..
