How to make a valve out of stainless steel....
You can't turn the stem in one go, you have to do it in small steps. Once the stem is machined to a little over sized fine emery paper is used to finish for a nice sliding fit on the guide Bush. The valve seat is then cut and then parted off. One down, 8 to go.
Here's a picture of all the parts I've made in the last few weeks.
I've spent a lot of time in the workshop in July mass producing valve gear parts. Probably doesn't look like much but I can assure you some of those parts take quite a bit of time to make correctly. I'm working from the CAM roller up to the valve rocker.
Mesmerizing....
Major milestone completed today on the Monosoupape. All the pistons, conrods, wrist pins etc are playing nicely together which is a relief. It took quite a while to fit all the parts together and sort out some minor niggles.
Putting it all together ready for trial fitting to the engine 😅
Big end machined from phosphor bronze.
Wrist pins from silver steel ready for big end.
Gudgeon pins from silver steel and end pads from copper ready for conrods.
To make the conrods I first had to make the blanks out of a large flat bar as I didn't have the required size on hand. Lots of profiling to get the final shape. There are 8 identical and one slightly different master rod.
Mass production of piston rings. I made 9 extras just in case a few got broken while fitting. It took quite a bit of fettling to get the 9 pistons loaded with rings and fitted to the appropriate bore. Stressful business expanding the rings to fit over the pistons 😅. Now that is done I can move on the the big end and connecting rods etc.
