Scalded Cat Steam Rocket Propulsion
Rocket propelled cars and vehicles This page was created to share steam rockets with the world.
Originally inspired by Evel Knievel's steam rocket used to jump the Snake River Canyon in 1974, I began my own steam rocket experiments in 1994, finally launching my first "Scalded Cat" steam rocket in 2000, followed by powering a go-cart with a steam rocket the next year. Since then, I have built and tested numerous steam rockets, launching 3 different ones into the sky, powering my go-cart by two different ones, and now powering my 1999 Suzuki Swift with yet another.
Not directly (maybe not even indirectly) steam rocket related, but you've just gotta love Orville Wright!
Progress on Solar Cat - Generation 2 continues
Some progress on the "Solar Cat Generation-2" mobile solar furnace/launch pad
The second destructive test of a 5 gallon propane bottle was conducted on March 12th at the Reaction Research Society's Mojave Test Area. Shorter video this time.
On January 15th at the Reaction Research Society's Mojave Test Area, the first test of the long awaited destructive testing program was conducted. This is to determine what degradation may occur in propane bottles repeatedly used as steam rocket motors.
This first test, and the planned second one, are to establish a baseline by using a bottle containing water for the first time. Future tests will compare bottles that have been repeatedly used before the final test to failure.
Super-secret mission - 2021
Got the bright idea to try an experiment in extracting water from the ground via a Boy Scout type "survival solar still". The thought was that if in addition to the heat and electricity coming from sunlight, the water could also be gathered "on site" too, that would make the Solar Cat even project even more unique...
Interesting footage of the most powerful and amazing steam rocket I've ever seen.

Solar Cat's highest performance flight yet at approximately 405 degrees F and 330 psi. This launch took place at an undisclosed super-secret location on an undisclosed and classified date. Approximate altitude achieved via timing it's time in the air was 401 feet.
Scalded Cat was back at the Reaction Research Society's Mojave Test Area with another test of the world's first solar powered steam rocket. A band of overcast came in front of the sun for an hour or more, really slowing the heating effort, but we were finally able to achieve launch, but still at a much lower temperature and pressure than optimum. Many thanks to Keith and Nadara Soules, and Jon Wells for coming out to help!
