The Death of Cleopatra was Edmonia Lewis’ most ambitious project: A large marble sculpture (weighing almost 3 tons), completed for the 1876 Centennial exhibition in Philadelphia.

This work is a site-specific response to the history of Western museums, their relationships to imperial expansion, and their history in objectifying and displaying human subjects and artworks from colonized and racialized nations.
My body remains concealed within a pedestal structure while my head is enclosed and exhibited in a display case.

New Orleans! Come out Saturday evening for the PATOIS screening of Mother, I Am Suffocating. This Is My Last Film About You, an experimental documentary film produced, written and directed by Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese. Through magnetic images, poetry, and prose, Mosese stitches together a visual masterpiece that explores themes of migration, queerness, and home. This film received critical acclaim from all over the world and PATOIS is excited to bring it home for a New Orleans Premiere Saturday, Oct 1, 2022 at 8pm! There will will be a performance by poet Naomi Daugherty preceding the screening.
