Heidi Reeder, Ph.D., and Brian Thompson, MS, had a fantastic time supporting the recent Jacksons Food Stores Leadership Summit at Extra Mile Arena. Nearly 400 leaders came together for their presentation titled “24/7 Leadership.” The Jacksons leaders were willing to jump in and learn (as demonstrated by several of them seen here trying to accomplish a difficult team task). A fun and engaging afternoon of learning with a great group of leaders!

Meet Sabrynna!

Originally from California, Sabrynna lives in San Antonio, TX, where she is an active duty service member in the United States Air Force, working in the intelligence field as a Targeting Analyst.

Although her career path has been far from easy, each day is rewarding in new ways. “As a staff sergeant, I am entrusted to lead and develop airmen. This program stuck out to me because it allowed me to grow my leadership skills so that I could nurture future leaders and make room for positive cultural change within the Air Force. Overall, this program has helped me turn my weaknesses into strengths and has helped me develop my leadership style.”

The military is a male-dominated career field, but Sabrynna has found it to be a rewarding opportunity to sharpen her leadership skills. “Often being the only woman in a room full of men lowered my confidence in social situations. However, over the years, I have learned to stand up for myself in difficult situations and make myself not only seen or heard but valued. That is what makes me feel empowered as a woman leader. I live authentically and with integrity. I know that if I seek change, I must challenge the status quo and stand up for what is right. I strive to pave the way for women leaders who follow in my footsteps and seek my guidance.”

When not working, she loves to go off-roading, being a DJ, and exploring Texas with her husband, Jacob, and their dog, Agave.

A favorite of Sabrynna’s quotes comes from Ginni Rometty . . . “I learned to always take on things I'd never done before, growth and comfort do not coexist."

Meet Teresa!

Teresa comes from a large family and is a working mother of three girls and full time student. She works at a surgery center in Boise, and she loves to travel, attend athletic events (especially basketball) and is a coach who loves to work with kids and volunteers extensively in the classroom or in athletics.

"I chose to participate in the LEAD program because I felt that it would help me improve in my leadership skills. I have managed dental offices and a surgery center and I feel it's important to grow so I can improve so I am a better leader to my team and honestly anyone else who I can inspire along the way."

As a woman leader, Teresa feels that leading by example and being true to yourself allows you to grow and inspire all those around you. "What empowers me the most are my three daughters. I have been able to show them that as long as you have perseverance and an open mind you can accomplish anything. My father always encouraged me not to allow any barrier to stand in my way from my goals and that is what I've passed onto them....Don't give up, we as women have more to accomplish!"

Meat another one of our awesome LEAD Program professors, Duncan Robertson!

I am an adjunct instructor for the Leadership Program and currently teach LEAD 327: Relational Leadership. (I have only taught LEAD 327 so far).

The LEAD program has been valuable to me in so many ways since I was first introduced. I joined the leadership program during my undergrad to pursue the Leadership/HR certificate. What I didn't know was that by taking those classes, it would introduce me to an amazing team of instructors that I would eventually get to work with and be a part of. After completion of the LEAD classes, as well as being a TA for multiple classes in the program, I wanted to give back to the next generation of LEAD students so they could have the same great experience that I had.

The concepts taught in the LEAD program are applicable, important, and set any student up for success after graduation. I can't imagine my career without exposure to these concepts and practices. The best advice about leadership I can give to students is to never stop developing yourself and those around you as a leader. We can always improve in many aspects of leadership, and it's important to never do it alone! Surround yourself with quality, like-minded people and you will become the leader you've always wanted to be.

11/11/2021

Time to meet another Lead Program student. Say hello to Christy!

She will be graduating this spring with a major in Integrated Media and Strategic Communication, with a certificate in Sport Information and Culture Lead Certificate: Leadership and Human Relations.

“The classes that I have taken in the LEAD program have been some of my favorites to take throughout my college career and I think that they really highlight the beauty of a four-year university and all that it has to offer.

I started taking a few of the LEAD courses purely because I had some elective credits to cover and knew I didn't want to fill them with anything too rigorous, but in the process, fell in love with the content and everything new I was learning about myself.

There are definitely some courses in college that you can sit in for a whole semester and leave not feeling like you've gotten anything out of it, but I have left every LEAD course with new skills and knowledge that I can actually apply to my life immediately. This is such a good program for students of any major to enroll in because it teaches real-life skills that are useful regardless of the industry you want to enter. Not to mention that the professors in the LEAD program are some of the nicest and most supportive people on campus and truly care about helping you build these skills.”

28/10/2021

Meet Abby! Another lovely LEAD student💡

Abby is a senior who will be graduating this December with her major in interdisciplinary studies with a focus in psychology, communications, leadership and human relations!

She originally chose to be apart of the LEAD program so that she could go into more depth on emotional intelligence and the complexities of working with people!

21/10/2021

Everyone meet Kyle!

Graduating this fall semester in December with a:
Bachelor of Multidisciplinary Studies degree
Business Bridge to Career Certificate
Leadership and Human Relations Certificate

When I set out to be a part of the LEAD program and attain the Leadership and Human Relations certificate I was optimistic about how it might help me - specifically - at work. I had been working in the bike and ski industry for 17 years as a service employee and worked up to all the levels of management positions. I simply thought it might help me be a better manager.

Now, as I am nearing completion of the program, I realize it has so much more potential than creating effective managers. Everyone is a leader to someone, and it doesn't matter how involved or brief the interaction might be. This program has heightened my emotional intelligence and self/social awareness, allowing me to positively influence everyone around me and to make the biggest impact I can.

I am now working for ATS Inland NW, a building automation systems company, where I am managing commercial HVAC controls projects. The leadership skills I have learned are being applied there every day. It allows me to manage working relationships and create positive outcomes on all of my projects.

The LEAD program has been by far the most enjoyable part of my studies. I feel the knowledge I have gained from the Leadership and Human Relations Certificate will allow me to live the most satisfying and meaningful life I am capable of. I truly found the knowledge to be invaluable.

When you lead using positive influence, you create leaders out of those you have influenced. I would strongly encourage anyone to study leadership at Boise State University.

💡STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Meet Paul!

Paul is a junior with a dual major in Entrepreneurship and Business Administration, and pursuing the Applied Leadership Certificate. He is founder and Co-President of Trash Club BSU, and Events Coordinator for The Campus Sustainability Department.

Why I am Pursuing: A lot of what I do in my life revolves around motivating, engaging, and empowering people to create positive change. Understanding the practices of leadership helps me understand those I work with at a deeper level in order to do what I do more effectively and have a larger impact.

Photos from Boise State LEAD's post 13/10/2021

Hey there! I’m Tom Lungren and this is my family. We are BSU through and through! I received both my Bachelors Degree in Communication, and my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Boise State University.

I’ve taught Relational Leadership as an Instructor in the LEAD program at BSU for five years. I have had such an incredible experience teaching some of the very best students at the University who are involved in the LEAD program. To me, the LEAD program is so valuable because…responsible communication and effective leadership allow a person to live exactly the kind of life they want, in the best way possible. Students that participate in LEAD courses will not only learn this knowledge but also practice these skills in very unique ways that will both empower and enable them to influence, impact and shape the world around them. In short, LEAD will help you live your best life!

I would encourage any leader to be a “Relational Leader.” Leadership is a relational process. The effectiveness of any leader can be measured by their ability to create, foster, and maintain positive relationships with people. Lead with a reservoir of positivity that unlocks the best in people. Lead with both high love and high expectations because in the end, they are the same thing. Don’t just be a leader, but lead in the best way possible. Thanks for leading and thanks for reading! LEAD on!
