🌍💜 TODAY IS WORLD SJOGRENS DAY! At Crinkles and Crackles, we are dedicated to raising awareness about autoimmune conditions, including Sjögren’s syndrome. This commitment is the foundation on which our small bakery was built. We’re more than just a cookie company; we strive to help those, like myself, who are living with chronic autoimmune conditions.

Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own moisture-producing glands. This can lead to widespread and debilitating symptoms. The most common symptoms are dry eyes and dry mouth, as the immune system attacks the glands that produce tears and saliva. But it doesn’t stop there. Reduced moisture can lead to dry skin and rashes, and many patients experience joint pain, swelling, and muscle fatigue. It can also cause issues like acid reflux and difficulty swallowing due to dryness in the esophagus. Dryness in the airways can lead to chronic cough and lung issues. Less commonly, Sjögren’s can affect the kidneys, liver, and pancreas, leading to complications such as kidney disease or liver issues. Some patients even experience neuropathy, which can cause tingling, numbness, and weakness.

Here are some quick stats: Sjögren’s affects 1-4 million people in the U.S. alone. 9 out of 10 patients are women, and it’s commonly diagnosed in individuals aged 40-60.

I was diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome in 2019, prior to my lupus diagnosis. It has been a difficult journey, navigating the challenges and learning to manage the symptoms. But through it all, I’ve found strength and support from the Sjögren’s community.
