Say hi to Sammy. He teaches geology classes at Lane Community College and a field geology class in the Owyhee for University of Oregon, and he’ll be at our event in Eugene, Wednesday May 22. Sammy will lead an exploration of the geological history of the Owyhee Canyonlands while highlighting his connections with co-sponsor , and had this to say: “The geodiversity of the Owyhee watershed records a remarkable history of the tectono-volcanic events of the western US through the last quarter of a million years, and that is inextricably linked to its inhabitants – plant, animal, and human – as well as its future.” Learn more and RSVP: https://environmentamerica.org/oregon/center/events/explore-the-owyhee-canyonlands-2/

This land is your land, this land is my land 28/04/2024

Every month the Oregon Desert Land Trust introduces us to the people who love and live in the Oregon Desert. They come from various walks of life — and that’s the point of these articles, to acknowledge that we are different, but to spot light what we have in common.

Encircle Film Series | Documentaries to Inform and Inspire Action 12/03/2024

The documentary movie, Into the Canyon, is about a 750 mile hiking trip, along the length of the Grand Canyon, made by two friends: Kevin Fedarko (author of The Emerald Mile) and Pete McBride (Filmmaker and Photographer). But it “was more than just an endurance test — it was also a way to draw attention to the unprecedented threats facing one of our most revered landscapes.” Those threats are the same ones we face in Oregon’s Grand Canyon — the Owyhee Canyonlands.

Join me, March 21 at the Art House in Eugene (formerly The Bijou) before the movie, where I will have a table in the lobby with information on the efforts to create an Owyhee Canyonlands National Monument. There is a lot of positive movement going on towards this effort, and a good chance it will come to fruition this year. You can be a part of it. I will have the on-line petition supporting the creation of a National Monument on hand for you to sign, should you already be on board.

Following the movie, I will be part of a panel to answer any questions you might have about the threats to the Owyhee Canyon and answer any FAQ’s about the creation of an Owyhee Canyonlands National Monument. More info can be found in the attached link below.

A post fitting for Presidents Day, today’s newsletter from historian Heather Cox Richardson is about a moment in time for President Lincoln. It’s about the conditions of our country prior to his election, the mood of the electorate and Lincoln’s thought’s on the importance of holding elections, even during difficult times.

February 18, 2024 On the third Monday in February, the U.S. celebrates Presidents Day, a somewhat vague holiday placed in 1968 near the date of George Washington’s birthday on February 22, 1732, but also traditionally including Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12, 1809. This year, that holiday falls on Feb...

This is good news. The Bureau of Land Management Releases New Plan Conserving More than 400,000 Acres in Oregon’s Owyhee Canyonlands. This is not all the protection it needs, but it’s a great start, finally, to manage these lands with conservation on equal footing and to protect those lands that have been identified as LWC’s (lands with wilderness characteristics), meaning they already qualify for wilderness designation if they were ever to be so designated. You can see ONDA’s press release here, or copy and paste this link to read about it, if the PDF file doesn’t open up for you.

Oppose Military Threats to the Impeccable Owyhee - Oregon Natural Desert Association 24/03/2023

Here's another easy one to support. Click on the link, fill in your info, the letter is already written for you, and ONDA has done an excellent job of outlining the issues. But you can modify or add to their letter if you need to.

From my point of view, as I mentioned in several letters to the editor to bring this issue to the attention of Oregonians, the proposed extended overflight sections begin north of Three Forks, includes Big Antelope Creek, the West Little Owyhee and extends to our borders with Idaho and Nevada. These area’s offer some of our finest hiking, rafting, hunting, photographic and videographic opportunities.

Another outstanding quality of the Owyhee is one you cannot see or hear; it is “The Big Quiet” one will experience when visiting the region, which is also its nickname. It is concerning and ironic that the air force proposes expanding supersonic jet training, with their accompanying sonic boom overflight noise, in an area that is as iconic as the Owyhee, treasured for the very thing their activity would destroy; and it is a mistake, for it’s impact on people, wildlife and the environment. There are alternatives. If you care about the Owyhee, request they relocate training airspace or we can kiss the “Big Quiet” goodbye.
