Hatchive 1983

The first fashion show that we made hats for was Bruce Oldfield in 1983.
We called up Bruce and told him that we made hats and we wanted to show him what we were doing. He kindly asked us to come to his studio. We turned up and were so nervous that we almost didn’t ring the bell. We rang the bell. He was sooo nice to us and said we could make the hats for his show. We made some fringed headbands from shiny Raffia and some gloves with raffia trimming at the cuff.
The late great Michael Roberts was styling the show and picture 2 shows the drawing he did for Tatler Magazine. Bruce invited us to the after-show dinner at Mr. Chow. (WOW!)
I sat next to Michael Roberts and was so in awe of him that I couldn’t speak.

Fashion and art collide!
Paul Bernstock is one of the founders and designers behind Bernstock Speirs and he is also an artist.



I’ve always liked playing around with weaving and we’ve often used it to produce unique textiles for our hats.
I started experimenting with stretched canvas frames by slashing them and using different materials including raffia, sequined jersey and paper to weave striped and geometric patterns which were then overpainted in acrylic.
I’ve more recently been re-purposing men’s string vests to create multi-layered circles which overlap to form patterns and shapes.

We found a stack of straw hoods in the back of a shop in Brick Lane market. We used layers of car spray paint and tied knotted cotton fishing net from Lawrence Corner, an amazing shop selling 2nd hand utility and military clothing and assorted paraphernalia. Thelma was working in a jewellery shop in Covent Garden and the owner let us put them in the shop.
They were an instant hit!

I have always enjoyed painting and drawing. During lockdown in 2020 I became more involved in creating art.
I was painting mainly birds at this point and then I did an exhibition with .smithstudio and it began to become a desire to continue and paint and create!
I love experimenting with different mediums, surfaces, and ideas.
