100k subscribers is a huge deal.

I’m incredibly grateful for this milestone and all the hard work that went into it.

I lived and breathed YouTube – from coming up with video ideas, scripting, filming, editing, and more.

But when I got to that point of getting 100k subscribers, I honestly felt kind of meh about it.

Why?

Because I always knew I was going to get there.

Yes, I hit a milestone. But the real win was focusing (and enjoying) the journey getting there.

It was the consistent effort and focus I had that made this milestone inevitable for me.

Too often, we tie our worth to outcomes.

And that’s destructive, especially for us creatives.

It’s really the love for the process that fuels real success.

DON’T go to your friends and family for advice.

While it is heartwarming to hear how much your friends and family support you, their advice might not be the goldmine you think it is.

Let's be honest: well-intentioned compliments can be misleading. Your loved ones genuinely want to support you, but their opinions are often personal, not market-driven. And that's okay – they're not business experts.

Their opinion doesn’t actually hold equal weight than, say, fellow business owners.

To grow your business, you need more than encouragement.

Seek advice from people with proven experience in your industry. Ask yourself: Do they have the knowledge and results to back up their advice? Are they genuinely invested in your success?

Tune out the noise and focus on the advice that could actually help you move the needle.

Why do people say say they love your work, but then not buy?

Because of framing.

This matters so much more than people think and we don’t place enough focus on it.

The most common scenario I see is products with a higher price tag on a website that doesn’t look professional or trustworthy. The product may really be worth the price, but because the website looks not so good, makes you not trust the product by association. And so customers don’t buy. The framing isn’t congruent.

Congruency, in other words, is how well everything “matches” or lines up.

The reverse is also true.

Finding a product that’s priced so cheaply in what feels like a very high end store, makes the alarm bells go off in your head. “What’s wrong with the product?” “Is it defective?” These innocent questions are enough to make a customer walk away.

One small thing that’s out of place, or incongruent in your business, is enough of a reason for someone to say they love your work and they’re going to buy it, and then completely change their mind the next day.

Getting everything in your store congruent is a fix anyone can apply in their stores to increase sales instantly. So if you haven’t done this yet, have a look at your store with an objective eye, and see what you can do to get everything to match!

It’s a luxury and privilege to be an artist.

Truly. I am grateful every day for this opportunity to make a living with products I make with my heart and bare hands and through the services I create.

We could’ve chosen a path to do something soul crushing but pays the bills.

But many of us chose what our heart wanted: to make art.

Should other people be taxed for that decision?

Pricing should be an objective calculation of cost of goods, time spent manufacturing the item (not counting the time it took you to develop those skills because what if you learned slower or faster than the next person?) and profit margins.

The only subjective part is market demand, your brand and how much more could you charge based on what other similar shops sell.

Fast forward to the moment I realised that trading time for dollars was keeping me stuck doing things that weren't moving my business forward. This shift in perspective was liberating.

Why? Because:
👉 Trading time for dollars isn't sustainable. What if you need to take a break? Stop doing that craft show? Sales stop flowing in.
👉 You're not paid enough. Those custom orders? All that time spent on social media? If you count the hourly rate you're getting for that, it's peanuts!
👉 It doesn't build equity into my business. This means I have to start over every day looking for new customers. It never gets easier, and it's that hamster wheel that's hard to get off.

And let me tell you… I WISH I knew this sooner!

It would have saved me so much time and energy. And I wouldn't "made it" so much sooner!

So the next time you think about trading time for dollars, remember that we need to start working on moving FORWARD instead of keeping still in one place. Focus on moving away from trading time for dollars and moving towards leveraged income instead.

Want to know a moment that I didn't prepare for as a handmade business owner?

It's when I got so caught up in life that I barely have the time nor the energy to pack orders. 😓

Having tons of orders is a really good thing, and I'm thankful every single day for being a craft business owner.

But, honestly, sometimes it's so overwhelming that I just want to curl up into a ball and take a nap.

Then I soon learned how to perfectly balance my work and my life. This is so tricky, and it can be a slippery slope to navigate when not done mindfully.

Here's what I do now:

✅ I automate tasks whenever I can. This includes marketing, processing orders, and bookkeeping.
✅ I also delegate tasks to lighten my workload. This frees up so much of my time and energy.
✅ I set specific work hours. The thing about working at home is that I can work whenever I want to, but having a routine helps a ton.
✅ I never neglect my well-being, especially since running a business is so demanding. I always prioritize a healthy and happy Mei! This one was really hard for me to learn, since I was raised to put myself before everyone else.

And after implementing the above? Well, I had scaled my small jewelry business to six figures and not get burnt out in the process!
