Thresh Seed Co.
Thresh Seed Co. offers a diverse selection of unique, beautiful, and flavorful heirlooms for the home garden.
Because garden space is often at a premium, our focus is on varieties that have proven themselves as dependable, productive, and easy-to-grow.
Probably one of the prettiest ripening series we've seen on an eggplant. These are Comprido Verde Claro eggplant fruit.
Jacob's Cattle Bean. Shelling these beans is just good old-fashioned fun. The perfect activity for cold, winter evenings.
We've grown Ideal Market beans for years and they remain one of our favorite pole varieties. The beans have great flavor and they're nice and straight, making them perfect for canning.
Over the years we've struggled to find an iceberg variety that consistently produced in our Midwest climate, but we've finally found one. Ice Queen is an heirloom variety that shows excellent resistance to heat and is very slow to bolt. One of our new favorite varieties for burgers and wraps!
You gotta love a good copy writer. Bred with thick husks that protect the ears from damage by ear worms that so often plague sweet corn later in the season, Howling Mob was bred to be used as a second early corn to compete with the later-season varieties. Advertisements of the day boasted that Howling Mob afforded market growers the ability to plant in succession and have corn until frost. The name Howling Mob alluded to the crowds of buyers that would gather, anxious to purchase the fresh sweet corn. We'll admit that it was indeed the name that caught our attention as we combed the USDA database for forgotten relics, and the sweet kernels it produced did not disappoint.
Hopi Red Dye amaranth. This variety is a lot of fun to grow and it has so many uses. The seedlings can be used for micro greens, the young leaves for salad, the flowers for dye and the seed for "grain".
Juicy and sweet, these Green Flesh Honeydew melons make the perfect dessert. Our kids get a kick out of eating them this way and since it's healthy and almost no prep for us, we're cool with it.
Yield and uniformity are crucial when it comes to pickling cucumbers and Homemade Pickles checks both of these boxes. One of our favorites for packing quarts upon quarts of pickles.
Holstein cowpeas out grazing.
Henry Wilde Sunflower. This photo might elicit a sneeze from those with pollen allergies, but sunflower centers are just so fascinating. Development, biology, ecology, and genetics all happening right there!
Henderson Lima Beans. Still one of our favorite and most reliable lima bean varieties.
Garden melons seem a distant memory in this frigid Iowa weather, but we know it won't be too long before it's time to plant!
Grushovka is a great variety for containers and for gardeners with short growing seasons. Collected in the former Soviet Union by Bill McDorman of Seeds Trust, this variety variety was popular in the gardens of the dachas that dotted the Siberian countryside. Grushovka matures in just 65 days and produces good yields of 3-ounce, pink plum tomatoes.

Green Mizuna. If you're an impatient gardener, this one's for you. Pair with some arugula and cress and you've got a garden salad in just a few weeks.
Aren't these Golden Sweet peas just gorgeous?!
Gold Ball are our favorite turnips for flavor. The fall-grown bulbs have such a sweet, tender flavor.
Glasnost tomato. Another Siberian variety collected by Bill McDorman. This variety has great flavor and we love the "on the vine" characteristic. They just look pretty sitting on the counter.
Giant Noble Spinach.
German Giant radishes. We like to let these get a little bigger and then slice them thinly and use them in place of crackers, served with cheese. It's so good!
Genovese Itallian basil. We grow a lot of different basils, but this one is a staple.
Also known as North Dakota Early Yellow Flint, Gehu was first introduced in 1889 by famous seedsman Oscar H. Will. In his catalog, Will described Gehu as a "flint corn of beautiful, bright, glossy yellow color." Couldn't be more right. It is indeed a beautiful variety!
Garland daisy, also known as crown daisy, is a leafy herb native to the Mediterranean that produces lush green foliage topped with cheerful yellow and white flowers. Known as tong ho or tónghāo in China, ssukgat in Korea, tần ô in Vietam and shungiku in Japan, the garland daisy is a ubiquitous ingredient all across the continent of Asia, where its tender green leaves are frequently chopped and served in stir-fries, stews, and hotpots. Beyond its culinary appeal, the garland daisy is an excellent producer of lovely flowers that are beautiful in the landscape and great for floral arrangements.
Garden Cress. Love the spicy flavor of this fast growing green!
Galina is a Siberian variety collected by Bill McDorman of Seeds Trust shortly before the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It produces 1" wide, yellow cherry tomatoes with a delicious, sweet flavor. Bears early and consistently right up until frost.
