So I did a detailed analysis of all the players we signed from 2017 ( which was the year our former technical director, Michael Emenalo left Chelsea) till date. This players were negotiated under the greenlight of Marina Granovskaia without the help of any technical director. We mostly signed top players from then till date and I'm gonna make my list of players that performed:
- Antonio Rudiger
- Olivier Giroud
- Jorginho
- Kovacic
- Thiago Silva
- Ben chilwell
- Edouard Mendy
N.B: this is my own list of players who performed for Chelsea at the top level so you are free to make your own list.
Out of 23 players who were bought permanently since 2017, only 7 actually lived up to expectation. We could have invested the money used on the other 20 players on Bitcoin (I'm joking tho).
The reason we didn't run at a loss much was because Marina was able to get high loan fees from most of our loan armies and we ended up selling most for not to bad fees but that doesn't remove the fact that they didn't live up to expectations in Chelsea...
Michael Emenalo said something way back when he was still our technical director and I quote "My argument was that all big clubs had great academies. Ajax, Barcelona, Real Madrid. But creating a new identity at Chelsea, rooted in the academy, while his ambition is to win trophies, was difficult," said Emenalo, who chose to leave the club in 2017.
"At first, everybody said: 'Nobody's come from the academy.' But a kid who comes to the academy at seven won't be ready to challenge Frank Lampard when he's 19. It became key to look at that space between 19 and 22 where we can prepare him to be a Chelsea player. We did that with De Bruyne.
"He was 18, a super talent, but the first time I mentioned that De Bruyne can eventually replace Lampard there was a guffaw of laughter. [Romelu] Lukaku was the same. He's 18 and I say you have to put five years into him.
"My scouts had identified something was happening in Belgium. Hazard, De Bruyne, Lukaku, Chadli, Vertonghen, Courtois. The manager looked at me and said: 'When did Belgium become Brazil? Who's this Kevin De Bruyne?' I told him: 'I don't look at passports. I just watch the player. And this player doesn't miss a pass. I don't know if he will be a superstar but there's something here'." (Sky sports)
This were the words of a man who had vision for the future as much as the present but ever since he left Chelsea, we have ended up buying big names who end up flopping... Marina might have been the best business mind I've ever saw in a football club but she didn't make much smart buys since 2017 till date...
We av lacked good scouts since then and we have kept buying for buying sake. To be among one of the top spenders and yes we have won trophies with the "flops" but we shouldn't remove the fact that we would have spent less if this crops of "flops" really lived up to our expectations..
We just spent over a 200m in 2020/21 and we are here trying to spend again to replace most of the players because they didn't live up to expectations. Do we have to keep spending 200m every 2 years???
I might sound like a hater but I'm not. I'm definitely gonna miss her but I think it's nice we are parting ways with her if we are thinking of going the right way, which is the football way... π
