Happy June everyone! Let's review a drug interaction today!
A penicillin allergic patient is most likely to have a cross-sensitivity to which other antibiotic group?

Cross-sensitivity occurs with penicillins & cephalosporins due to the beta-lactam ring shared by both groups. Some cephalosporins include: cefotaxime, cefoxitin & cefazolin. (Stoelting, Pharmacology and physiology in anesthetic practice, 4e., 2006)

Give us a like on FB if you like to see occasional board review questions! Have a great day!

It's Monday & time for another review question!

Can you name at least 3 characteristics of Atrial Flutter?

Atrial rate is 250-350bpm, the rapid p waves create "sawtooth" appearance on ECG, most noticed in leads II, III, aVF, & VI, 2:1 AV conduction is most common, it frequently occurs with other dysrhythmias (a-fib, atrial tachycardia).

(Hines & Marschall, Stoelting's Anesthesia & Co-Existing Disease, 2012)

14/04/2015

It's a beautiful day for a board review question!

What are the two pathways for the synthesis of Prostaglandins by Arachidonic Acid?

Answer: The pathways are the cyclooxygenase pathway and the lipoxygenase pathway

(Stoelting & Hillier, Pharmacology & Physiology in Anesthetic Practice, 4th Edition)

02/04/2015

Happy Thursday!

Question of the day: How does ketamine work?

Ketamine is a phencyclidine derivative that produces "dissociative anesthesia". It binds noncompetitively on NMDA receptors, and produces dissociation between the thalamocortical and limbic systems. (Stoelting & Hillier, Pharmacology and Physiology in Anesthetic Practice, 4th ed, 2006)

31/03/2015

Who doesn't love a random review question every now and then? Keep checking back for our "anesthesia question or fact" of the day!
What are some of the early clinical signs of Malignant Hyperthermia?

Early clinical of signs of MH include: sinus tachycardia, tachypnea (with spontaneous ventilation), hypercarbia (that doesn't improve with compensatory increases in minute ventilation) and masseter muscle spasm. (Hines & Marschall, Stoelting's Anesthesia and Co-Existing Disease, 6thed. 2012)
