It’s time to go to the (virtual) nail salon 💅 We have a few fans of this activity— elementary, high schoolers, and the in between— who have all been participating in OT via Telehealth. This motivating activity can serve as a way to improve fine motor control, fine motor strength, bilateral coordination, and visual motor skills, as well as help with identification and naming of fingers (pointer, middle, ring finger, etc.). This serves as a great preparatory activity for occupations like typing, snapping fingers, handwriting, and of course, painting nails!! Kids having to manage supplies and deal with those tricky twist tops are added bonuses! Additionally, we really love the small thin tops on the bottles, as it promotes use of a tripod grasp with proper verbal cues. If you want to add in a challenge for memory and attention, call out multiple colors and nails that need to be painted, i.e. “paint the ring finger blue, and the pinky finger purple.” It’s a fun activity for sure!!

Check out this list for some of my little guy's favorite shows on Netflix. Of course, there are lots of wonderful movies on Netflix too, but this list may help you during those moments of distance learning when you need something educational for your little that is different than the norm. You know that I whole heartedly promote hands on exploring together, but let's be real. There's a time to screen together too. It's also something safe for him to watch while I have to take that Zoom call. Anyway, hope this list helps! I'm thinking of making a list like this for Disney Plus and YouTube Kids, if it helps.
This is my most widely shared post. And rightly so, it’s an important one. These are “prewriting patterns”, with the average (not prescribed) age at which children are developmentally ready to achieve these patterns listed below them in years and months. Being able to process visual information and produce a movement in response (e.g. copying these prewriting patterns or letter formations), is known as “visual motor integration”. ⠀
⠀
Note that an X is not typically achieved until 4 years 11 months, and a triangle at 5 years 3 months. If a child can’t form these basic shapes...then they probably won’t be able to form letters. ⠀
⠀
It is quite concerning then that there are 3 year 7 month olds starting formal schooling, where they’re expected to write. Not only are their visual motor integration skills not developed enough, their hands are also physically under-developed. In addition, recognising letters, understanding phonics and beginning to read are all needed in order for a child to write meaningfully, skills which children starting kindy typically don’t have. We also know that when a child learns something that doesn’t hold meaning, it‘s unlikely to stick. ⠀
⠀
So if you have a 3-4 year old who spontaneously asks or attempts to write letters, that’s great; otherwise, there is no need to initiate or worry about this. Unfortunately there is a misconception, particularly with the way that the current curriculum stands, that earlier is better. Earlier is not always better.⠀

Books for Kids Who Worry or Have Anxiety With everything that is happening in the world right now, many kids and adults find themselves feeling anxious and worrying more than usual. One way to help your kids work through these feelings is with books. Here are some great books for kids who worry or have anxiety.
Here’s an easy little spring time craft 🌷Use lincoln logs as a stamp to help promote a pincer grasp - it’s extra easy because kids can place their fingers in little grooves. None of those around? Use cotton balls, q-tips, old wine corks, cut up sponges, or dot markers instead! For a tougher challenge, call out different fingers to make petals with to really practice finger isolation. This is a great prep for any fine motor task, like playing piano, handwriting, typing, buttoning, beading- the list goes on!
