SYMPOSIUM, 2023 AFRICAN MINING INDABA.
Hon. George Mireku Duker - MP, Tarkwa-Nsuaem. writes,
On Sunday, February 5, 2023, I, on behalf of the Sector Minister, represented Ghana at the Ministerial Symposium as the opening session of the 2023 "Investing In African Mining Indaba" held at Westin Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa.
Together with *Hon. Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources & Energy of South Africa, Hon. Sen. Gbemisola Sariki, Minister of State, Mines and Steel Development, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hon. Antoinette N'samba Kalambayi, Minister of Mines, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. Demetrios Papathanasiou, Global Director, Energy & Extractives, World Bank and others* held a panel discussion on the topic: _*Geopolitical Change and the Developmental Opportunity for Africa.*_
In my presentation, I indicated how the blend of Covid_19 and Russia-Ukraine War have disrupted global supply chains which has led to food insecurity, rising energy costs and how African countries have responded with various home grown policies to manage the situation.
On how African Countries are taking advantage of its numerous mineral endowment, I made a case for Ghana in the areas of how the government has laid down structures which have led to the increased case for Resource Nationalism, Local Content/Localization and Value Addition drive to ensure that, the State derives all the necessary benefits along the mineral exploitation, processing and marketing chain to avert export of wealth to other countries.
Specifically, I touched on how the government of Ghana have established the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation(GIISDEC) and Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC) as special institutions to ensure the integrated development of iron and bauxite respectively from exploitation to finished products in-country.
Thank you.
