In April, the August Wilson Society commemorates August Wilson’s birthday and celebrates its anniversary. Founded in April 2006, this nonprofit organization hosts excellent programs and impactful projects that promote the rich legacy that Wilson has bequeathed to us in the American Century Cycle plays and in his other writings. By April 30, please support our August Wilson birthday fundraiser and donate via the donate link in our bio to help us continue making strides to keep August Wilson’s legacy alive. Your gift will mark our 18th anniversary and honor August Wilson’s April 27 birth date in a tangible way. The August Wilson Society (AWS), in partnership with Howard University's Office of Alumni Affairs, is pleased to welcome renowned actress and educator Phylicia Rashad, Dean of Howard University's Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, as the featured speaker for the 5th Annual August Wilson’s Ground Lecture Series. This year’s event is entitled August Wilson’s Ground in the Age of AI.

This event will be held at 7:00 p.m.(EDT) and will be preceded by a reception sponsored by the Howard University Alumni Office. Both the pre-lecture reception and the lecture are free; however, registration is required to attend each. Following the lecture, AWS will host its annual VIP fundraising dinner. A significant portion of the proceeds will support scholarships for deserving students enrolled in the Chadwick A. This week, we're pleased to announce that Shakespeare & Company will co-host our third trivia round with us, highlighting Wilson's play Fences.

Here’s the fun facts about this play:
đź“Ś Fences was the first play for which Wilson won a Pulitzer Prize in 1987.
đź“Ś In 1990, Fences was optioned for a movie deal, but years of delays followed as Wilson insisted upon a Black director for the film.
📌 Fences was inspired by painter Romare Bearden’s collage, Continuities.

The August Wilson Society (AWS) is thrilled to announce its 5th Annual August Wilson’s Ground Annual Lecture Series to be held on September 21, 2023, at Howard University’s Armour J. Blackburn University Center. This event will be in-person.

ABOUT KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Phylicia Rashad, Dean of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University, was recently named the inaugural Toni Morrison Endowed Chair in the Humanities. Dean Rashad is a Tony-winning Broadway, film, and television actress, and alumni trustee. Her career paved the way for countless African-American women. Phylicia Rashad also takes on the roles of director and master class professor.
